An immensely detailed and chilling account of Romania's early Communists, prefaced with extraordinary mugshots of many of them - a startlingly villainous looking crew, most of them hideously ugly, and most of them not having Romanian surnames. This was one of the (many) surprises for me about this book. It makes sense that marginalised and oppressed groups within Romania such as Jews, Hungarians and Bulgarians would have been disproportionately attracted to Communism, but I was intrigued to see ...more
