Shaw's second novel tells the story of a troubled doctor who has been working in Africa and has returned to England to be awarded a knighthood. His problems stem partly from his alcoholic father who died prematurely (like Shaw's) and partly because of certain things he has done to - or failed to do for - the afflicted African tribe he was trying to help. A Snapshot of Life
A doctor, Africa, a man named 'Friday', poetry, crocodiles, London, etc....
It took until "Part-Two" of this novel for it to grab my attention, possibly due to my interest in Africa - due to extensive research during ghost authoring a novel for E. MH Ratterman.
Number rating relates to the book's contribution to my needs and ability to captivate my interest.
Overall, this work may prove a good resource for the researcher and enthusiast.
Purchased due to the author, Robert Shaw, of

Robert Shaw is a beautiful writer, his language is poetry and stories profound. This is my second Shaw novel and it was an alluring story. The man in the glass booth was better but this one was more moving I think. How Shaw described the main characters thought made me almost believe it was written from his own experience.

Very intriguing story. Beautifully written although I did find parts of the story hard to follow mainly due to the complexity of the sentences. Possibly this is due to the age of the book and not too many novels are written in that way these days?

Maybe had a touch of Conrad and read a little dated due to its use of language and terminology. Good vivid description of time and place gave a realistic sense of the era. Ambiguous storyline of the shame that Halliday felt though.
