Il volume offre un percorso di conoscenza di una delle più belle e famose città d' Firenze. Il testo e le immagini accompagnano il lettore in un viaggio in cui il glorioso passato si snoda fino al presente, assorbendone i confini e brillando di nuovo splendore. Partendo dalle origini l'autore ripercorre i tempi della "florentina libertas", per poi passare ai fasti del principato mediceo e asburgo-lorenese, e giungere infine alla Firenze del XX secolo, con i suoi momenti di difficoltà e le sue crisi, ma anche con la sua carica inventiva e la sua instancabile spinta al rinnovamento.

Franco Cardini (Firenze, 1940) è uno storico e saggista italiano. Laureato in storia medievale presso l’Università di Firenze attualmente è professore emerito presso l’Istituto di Scienze Umane e Sociali (Scuola Normale Superiore).
Ha scritto numerosi libri e pubblicazioni.

This book tries to cover the long history of this city, and of course touches many things. However, at the same time, it cannot explain very well the details, because otherwise it would be too large and heavy. I felt that the language was a bit too elaborate, and there were many references difficult to understand. This is because I don't know enough to fully understand, but is also because of the choice of the author to use his erudition. But for someone wishing to have a sense of the long history of this city, without digging too much into the why of many periods, it is a useful book with a good, albeit a bit ageing, portfolio of pictures. Self-centered Firenze, at one point described almost as a "megalopolis" (!), Liberty may not have been as natural to you as Beauty, but Ambition for sure had. And this book also has an ambition, than of compressing centuries into one volume, while illustrating many of the beauties you keep.
