Nice story of a change of heart for the elementary school age crowd. A little long for reading aloud, depending on the audience. but the pictures are great.

Mrs. Portly finds a pup named Snack in a basket at the vegetable stand. "You need a home. I have a home. How lucky is that?' she proclaims.

Snack listens eagerly as Mrs. Portly rattles off the rules of the house, one of which involves not getting underfoot of Mr. Portly. Snack snuggles at Mrs. Portly's slippers as she makes meals, paints glorious watercolors, and watches cartoons. But when Mr. Portly returns from a fishing trip, Snack is banished to a dog house outside.

Mrs. Portly adopts Snack as a puppy while Mr. Portly is off on a fishing trip. Snack helps Mrs. Portly with her painting, he enjoys eating dinner with her and sleeping in her bed. Then when Mr. Portly arrives home from his fishing trip everything changes and Snack has to live in a doghouse outside. One night the Portlys are robbed and Snack wakes up the Portlys as the robber is getting away. Then Mr. Portly comes to love Snack too.
