About the author

Jeanne Willis was born in St Albans and trained as an advertising copywriter at Watford College. She worked for various agencies creating press adverts and TV, cinema and radio commercials. She is now a full-time writer and has published over 80 books. Her hobbies include gardening, reading (non-fiction), natural history and collecting caterpillars. Jeanne has also worked on scripts for TV, including POLLY POCKET and THE SLOW NORRIS, and a pilot TV series for DR XARGLE. She lives in North London with her husband and two children.

This book is fatphobic as f#$%! It tells the story of a dog and cat that are depressed and board and think their couch is shrinking. But once they get off their couch, go on an adventure, and loose a bunch of weight, they come back home, get rid of the couch, and like themselves much better. They like themselves now that they are thin and beautiful. This book is horrible. Still doesn’t not deserved to be banned, but it’ doesn’t mean it needs to be read either.

Lötkökissa ja rötkökoira on kuulunut miun aikuisten satutuntisettiin, koska aikuisille tarina menee jakeluun: reippaat syömärit nousevat sohvalta ja huomaamattaan seikkailevat kohti parempaa vointia. Mutta koska julkaisusta on jo vuosikymmen, mietin miten kirja toimii tänä päivänä - varsinkin lopun alleviivaus. En ehkä ottaisi tätä enää satutunnille, vaan käsittelisin pelkkää ääneenlukua kriittisemmin.

Lötkökissa ja Rötkökoira rakastavat syömistä, juomista ja nukkumista. Lopulta he kuitenkin huomaavat, että sohva on kutistunut ja tyynyt kasvaneet siinä määrin, että on aika nousta ylös ja lähteä etsimään kaukaisia sukulaisia. Ja kuinkas sitten käykään...

Tämä kirja oli... mielenkiintoinen. Toisaalta kirjan tematiikka pyörii tärkeän asian ympärillä - kuinka pidät itsestäsi ja kehostasi huolta, mutta vaakakupin toisessa päässä painaa huomattavasti se, ettei lasten kuulu miettiä vielä painoaan.

Books have taken up the hue and cry against childhood obesity. Children are introduced to the causes of obesity—eating too much and not exercising—through the characters of Flabby Cat and Slobby Dog. When the duo get too big for their couch, they set off on an outdoor adventure that also introduces a solution to obesity—exercise and moderation. By the time they return home, they’re no longer flabby and slobby but physically fit.

The message here is obvious, if overly heavy-handed. No word on whether overweight parents and teachers are going to feel comfortable reading this to children, though.
