This highly engaging volume by one of Korea's leading scholars of comparative mythology - the the first study of its kind in English - provides a valuable introduction to centuries-old beliefs, myths and folk tales relating to Cosmology and Flood, Birth and Agriculture, Messengers of the Underworld, Shamans, Disease, Good Fortune, Love and Family, Gods of Village Shrines, and Heroes. Containing thirty traditional stories, the book is fully illustrated throughout and contains a wide variety of Korean art, including rare shamanist paintings, as well as the work of some contemporary Korean artists. All the stories, based on Korean oral tradition, have been retold by the author according to their main plot and meaning because the original texts' songs by shamans, containing many obsolete words and obscure idioms, are not easily understood today. The original title and source, including text notes, are provided at the end of each story. The author's Introduction sets out the historical background and significance of the myths that appear here. He also provides full details of each of the Korean gods and their roles in mythology. While being a welcome addition to the literature on Korean culture for the non-specialist, An Illustrated Guide to Korean Mythology also provides an invaluable reference source for scholars and researchers in the fields of East Asian Mythology and Anthropology, as well as Korean History, Religion and Literature.

Interesting stories, which really show some of the mindset of the Korean people from the olden times.
I like how the myths come with beautiful, colorful illustrations. Although not always do the illustrations fit the content of the story, albeit that the discription underneath the illustrations do give some clearance.

The only thing I felt could really have been better is the grammar. Sometimes sentences weren't correctly constructed, which was a pity. On the upside, it was only a small number of sentences which weren't correct.

An Illustrated Guide to Korean Mythology was an interesting and well presented book. There was a general introduction before the collection of stories began, and in between the tales were some excellent illustrations. Definitely worth a look for anyone interested in Korean mythology, especially as a good proportion of the tales were ones I hadn't read in the frequently found folklore collections. I am giving this book 4.5 stars.

Not as comprehensive as I'd like it to be, but this is still a good place for one to start at when researching/reading up on Korean mythology.

This book was a dissappointment. Early on the structure of this book was not good. It claimed this or that but since the stories referenced are only vaguely mentioned, I had not much faith in this so far. At first it seemed like a lexica of gods and it is almost nothing but gods, so is this really a guide to mythology?
The book had a bit of improvement when it switched to individual stories but the first story already was oddly written. And the stories were long and boring. And something was odd. This one element of the beautiful wife's picture flying away is the only familiar thing. And so many names are so long. The other Korean tales that I know had much shorter names. Are these really folk tales? These stories are way too long to be folk stories. They are so long I had trouble remembering the details because there is no pause. Who wrote these long stories? At about half of the book I gave up.. These stories have some highlights here and there, but as typically for stories written like folklore stories but being so long, they are boring really fast because there is no chapter or anything to stop and get a breather and so I tended to forget what happened in them

Наше життя так чи інакше впливає на міфи, які ми створюємо. Спочатку природно виникають короткі історії, а потім поступово зливаються, набуваючи форми і структури міфів. В залежності від регіонів можуть змінюватись деякі нюанси чи закінчення, які автор надає в коментарях (це все ж наукове дослідження).

Усе має своє походження. Без початку ніщо не може існувати. Можна сказати, що прагнення людини до витоків найщиріше проявляється в міфах і священних оповідях, які намагаються розповісти про все.

Чому ми бачимо сонце тільки вдень, а місяць - тільки вночі; як були створені всі зірки на небі?
як з'явилися всі істоти на землі на початку?
Міфи про створення світу найперші розділи в книзі, адже вони прагнуть пояснити як влаштовано Всесвіт. Цікаво, що давні корейці вірили, що було два Сонця та два Місяця. Тут була також історія про Потоп, але дещо з іншим сюжетом😊

Перш ніж запросити когось додому запитували: Ти людина чи дух? Міфи про потойбіччя, це скоріше спосіб зрозуміти що чекає нас після смерті і образ довгої дороги, місця/країни звідки не повертаються слугує як метафора. Багато міфів про те, що є можливість за допомогою цілющої квітки (або іноді води) оживити людину.

Служіння батькам важливіше за будь-які інші справи чи стосунки.
Вірять в сни і шаманські тлумачення, ворожіння, це окремий розділ міфології.
Якщо 100днів смирено молитись,робити певні обряди і пожертви, то боги дадуть, все, що там вони собі вимолювали (зазвичай дитину). А ще чомусь жінка вагітна 10 місяців🤔
Цікаво як через якісь дії героїв з'являються приказки чи народні повір'я🤭

Цілий пласт міфів присвячений різним захворюванням та дитячій смертності. Віспа була найстрашнішим випробуванням в корейців, що вони придумали навіть окремого бога для цього - Sonnim.

Деякі сюжети навіть складно переказати, бо якоїсь повчальної складової чи логіки в діях героїв я не помітила, це наче тобі дали фактаж як було... і все, без зайвих запитань.
Чимало символів через цифри: 3000 мудреців, 108 намистин, 100 днів молитви, т.д натякають на релігійні чи філософські тексти з буддизму та даосизму.
А ще це вперше у міфах зустріла нецензурну лайку🤭
