The Narration: 2.5 Pants Off
I’m telling you p, great books are being ruined by subpar narration 😫

This series is just keeps surprising me, I am all kinds of blown away. I was personally not looking forward to Jim and Griffin's story, because I wanted more Evan and Matt. Was this a surprise or what, I loved these characters and I am so happy that Jim(James) got his own HEA.
We met Jim in the first book Faith & Fidelity and he was like the other man, so instant hatred,lol. Well he gets his own book and we get to know him in a way that’s all types of good. He is the strong silent type, the good cop who takes his work seriously. When a case he was working on doesn't have a happy ending, he makes it his top priority to take care of the victim’s family. Blaming himself for almost everything, his personal life is basically non existent. His straight friends are always trying to hook him up, and he is just tired of it. Well seems he is gonna find his true love in the most unlikely circumstance, and with the least likely person.
A relationship that began when Jim’s old case was being turned into a movie. Griffin wanted to have a sit-down interview of sorts, but this interview leads both Jim and Griffin to get all kinds of personal. A night of hot sex leads to a relationship of sorts, but guess what real feeling start to happen, who would have thought. Will Mr screenplay writer be able to make it work with a cop who has been there and pretty much done that and something else. With impending doom coming from both corners, how will this relationship bloom.
I love Tere Micheals writing style, its fun and crisp. You will love every bloody character you meet in this book, they all carry a wit and so much personality. Jim is a sweetheart, he can offer so much but he lacks the power to convey his feelings, but Griffin gets him and together they are dynamite. The sex is super sweet, but who cares this book offers so much, sex is the side issue. I am just so in love with this series and want to be a voyeur in these books. A little bit of peeping never killed nobody (just avoid the cops). Just an awesome series and they are definitely worth checking out, cus you will be checking out of your pants by all the hotness in this book.

Love & Loyalty by Tere Michaels
Book 2 in the Faith, Love & Devotion series. Contemporary M-M romance. Can be read as a stand-alone romance but better as part of the series.
Jim takes his job as a police officer seriously and a recent judge decision has increased his workload. Griffin meets Jim because of Jim’s job. The two are attracted to each other and their relationship soon becomes important to both.
A fast romance that is lovable and hot. Griffin finds an unexpected depth in Jim which makes him question his own career. The couple was good together.
The humor of Jim’s friends not believing Griffin was real was great. The only downside of the story was Daisy and her lack of compassion.

3,5 Stars - just nice and slightly sweet!
I guess I'm a little disappointed right now because I was so fond of the first great book, Faith & Fidelity (my review) in this series. That one was a lovely relationship drama with a bit of depth and real-world problems. This second novel, about James (aka Jim) who we met briefly in the first book, feels too rapidly forced and sometimes I thought it was missing pages in the book. Overall, cute but nothing more.
Detective James "Jim" Shea is a Seattle homicide detective and in conjunction with the aftermath of a murder trial he meets Griffin Drake a screenwriter from Hollywood. Griffin and his friend, the famous actress Daisy, wants to make a movie based on the murdered young teenager and her family's fate. Once Griffin comes up to Seattle to get some background materials he may, after a dinner with plenty of wine, borrow a bed overnight at Jim's. A big bed...
All the loving entanglements can begin...
I like this author's writing style, a number of funny sayings, good dialogue at times and a good feeling in general - but something is missing this time. I have trouble putting my finger on what. Because; I like both the main characters, the supporting cast of characters, and the mood of the story. But it gets a little too fluffy and easy. I never have time to really get to know these two guys, which means I don't get really interested right into the heart about their romantic journey towards an HEA.
I find it hard to believe that big love comes so fast and life decisions are taken so quickly. Perhaps another hundred pages, a detailed description of thoughts, feelings and situations, had made this a better novel. All in all - worth reading (I didn't skim) - it is a nice story about two men who dare to take risks and love.
It's hot, cute and okay for some enjoyable M/M reading.

Another winner from Tere Michaels!!
I started this series a year ago and skipped over this book because I wanted more Evan and Matt...and why, WHY did it take me so long to come back?!?!
I loved Griffin and Jim! Come to think of it, it appears that Griffin may be my lucky character name, because I haven't found one yet I didn't like! And this one stole my heart from the first introduction!
Tere Michaels has such an ease in her writing that her characters and stories are just as easy to love. This series is definitely a favorite.
Jim and Griffin were two very different men, but completely complimented each other. I loved the effortless way they came together and fell into step in each other's lives. It was as if the two were just waiting to meet.
Jim may have been the tougher nut to crack (so to speak), but once you got to the core of him, he was filled with so much love that your heart hurt for everything he missed out on. Griffin was the perfect comedic relief when necessary and did a great job of bringing out the lighter side of Jim. And the chemistry between these two?? Fantastic!
One person I could have done without was Daisy - Griffin's self absorbed, so called "best friend" that had me gripping my kindle in frustration. UGH! I don't think there's any redemption for her in my eyes. I hate chicks who love drama.
But on the flip side....let me not forget to mention Mimi, Terry's (Jim's partner) wife....total scene stealer! LOVED HER!!
Overall, a great addition to this series and winner from Tere Michaels. Another book that proves why she's an auto-buy author for me!

Jim and Griffin are lovely to watch fall in love. The second book by Tere Michaels made me laugh and cry. I worried that nothing could live up to Faith and Fidelity and this one came closer then I thought it might. It does have more sex then her first book but it didn't seem to have the same emotional growth and depth of both characters as the first book. But it is still easily a 5 star read.
Several things about this book are atypical in regards to the plot that I really, really enjoyed and appreciated. Many of the angsty clichés were avoided when they could so easily have pulled this book down into the depths of despair. I don't want to give anything away in the review though and mentioning those things more specifically might ruin the anticipation of the culmination of the problems facing Jim and Griffin.
Jim does the most growing in this book. I hope to see these men again farther down the road in their relationship. It was nice to visit, albeit much too briefly, with Matt and Evan again from Faith and Fidelity too.

The only reason it did not get the 5 stars is because I gave the previous one 5 stars and it did not live up to its reputation. It was still and excellent read and I loved the 2 main characters. I especially loved Jim... oh sweet James - you can still blush at 45 when paid a compliment - Come to me. I swear I would turn gay if I was a guy for Jim. Good story, good sex scenes - still not too graphic, Phew! Got a quick check on Matt from book 1. Poor Ed, wasn't he just the sweetheart. I love it when I find a new author and new series - my bank account does not. Off to start the next one now. Good night.

I liked this book better than the first one. Jim and Griffin are adorable together and Jim's friends are awesome. The story surrounding the romance of the two men gives glimpses into the harsh and gritty life of a detective in the homicide department and shows the not so bright and glamorous parts of Hollywood's film industry.
Again, the falling-in-love part came a bit too quickly for my liking considering that the whole book spans only a few weeks but in this case, I didn't mind too much. It still felt natural, IMO, and there's enough going on that keeps the story from being too fluffy (especially one scene that had me close to tears).
What made me wonder was that Jim felt like a totally different character than he was in Faith & Fidelity. Not sure if this was the author's intention or not. I still liked him, though.
And a brief comment on the audiobook: It was terrible! Not necessarily the narration which was good enough, but the quality! Missing sentences, static noise, and the entire epilog is missing.

Love & Lovalty is a very entertaining story with likeably main characters. In this story, we meet Jim Shea, a friend of Matt, we shortly met in the first story of the series. Jim loves his work and he is willing to go the little extra step that makes him an extraordinary homicide detective.
After a very painful and out of Jim's perspective unsuccessful trial in a case that kept Jim busy for a long time, he isn't willing to let the family of the victim down. He remains friends with Carmen's father and when the Ed Kelly is contacted by a screenwriter and an actor that want to turn his tragic story into a movie, he asks Jim to come to their first meeting.
And this is the way Jim and Griffin meet. I loved the way Griffin was able to get under Jim's skin and to make him change his whole opinion on relationships. However, everything moved extremely fast and I wasn't able to connect with these characters in the same way than I did with Matt and Evan, the very intriguing characters from part one of the series.
Love & Loyalty is still a very interesting read, it was basically really a 3,5 stars read, but in comparison with other 4 star books I read this year, I just can't round it up! I would still recommend this book and the series in general to all m/m romance lovers out that, who like to read about slightly older men and real life problems!

Opening Line: "James "Jim to almost everyone" Shea moved quickly through the throng of reporters and gawkers camped out on the front steps of the Seattle courthouse."
Tere Michaels has done it again with, another great read, sucking me in completly with her richly developed characters and well written romance. This isn’t necessarily a sequel to Faith & Fidelity (although that is where we first met James “Jim” Shea) and could easily be read as stand alone. Although in saying that you wouldn’t want to miss F&F because its fantastic and easily one of my all time favourite romances gay or straight. Anyways where was I? Oh right, Love & Loyalty.
Jim and Griffin, what a treat it was to watch these two fall in love, graduating from one long sleepover date to actually admitting they had a boyfriend. (That B word is a big deal here) Neither has been particularly lucky in love so while they do have immediate chemistry together, and act on it accordingly their ensuing romance develops at a gradual and realistic pace.
Michael’s doesn’t give us a lot of sex scenes after their first long drawn out night together and except for the fact that this is M/M romance I wouldn’t even classify it as erotic. Its more a character driven story which is where Michaels shines; writing such multi-dimensional characters (including the secondary ones) that you feel like you know them and all their little idiosyncrasies. I particularly enjoyed Jim’s partner Terry and his well meaning but intrusive wife, their banter is really funny. This isn’t as emotionally deep as F&F and Griffin’s movie deal side plot gets a little weak at times but it’s still a well written and highly absorbing story.

His latest case however has done a number on him and while it may be over its gotten way under his skin, leaving him filled with guilt about the outcome and tied to victims dying father.
When Hollywood comes looking to make a movie out of this tragedy screen writer Griffin Drake enters the picture, seizing the opportunity as his big break to finally write something real. In order to get the family’s story though he’s first got to get through the protective Jim Shea .The fact that they’re both gay is just going to make schmoozing him over dinner all that much sweeter.
Neither one expected much to come out of their first date, (is this a date?) and neither of them has been in a long term relationship before but Griffin doesn’t want to leave Jim’s apartment (he’s finally writing) and Jim’s surprised himself by enjoying having him there. Lies, death and broken trust threaten their new relationship and it’s a sweet ride. Cheers people.

I saved the best for last!
This was definitely my favorite book in the series. I just LOVED Jim and Griffin. Especially Griffin. They were just perfect. No stupid arguments. No stupid breakups. LOVED!!! I even shed a few tears. The sweet and the sad kind.
You get to see more of Jim and Griffin in Duty & Devotion, but I would love read another story that's only about these them.
4.5 Stars because there was a little head hopping that I found confusing.

This was a fun enjoyable read, while it didn't pull at me emotionally as the first book in this series, i really liked these two men. Jim is a homicide detective, who is tough, grumpy, but lovable. His latest case is drawing the attention of Hollywood, and that's how he meets Griffin Drake, a writer. I liked Griffin a lot. He is talkative, humorous, outgoing, sociable and loyal to his friends.
What i enjoyed the most about this book was the depth of the characters, they felt real to me and I genuinely liked them. I could see them in my mind, and watching them come together definitely put a smile on my face. And when things were starting to unravel with the movie I started to get concerned how that would play into their new relationship. When tragedy strikes it warmed my heart to see Griffin there for Jim. I loved how anal Jim was about cleaning, made him more real to me. Next time i eat in bed I am going to remember this little story.
This little story left me smiling and happy....

Sadly, this one didn't live up to the first. I liked the MC's but there wasn't much chemistry between Jim and Griffin and the plot was weak. I just wasn't feeling this one. I enjoy the writing style so no way will I give up on this author. There's an ease to the story and I love all the little bits of humor thrown in. Plus, all the secondary characters were strong and likable, especially Ed.
I want more Matt and Evan so onto the next.

This is the second book in a series. We meet Jim in book 1 and learn his back story. I enjoyed getting to see Jim get his HEA as he had a sad story up until this point. The plot was intriguing with the movie and all the drama surrounding it and gave something to focus on other than the relationship. I definitely look forward to reading more in the series.

Jim and Griffin were just fine as a couple but this fell short in comparison to Book 1. I know some had issue with how fast these two moved and I do agree but considering how quickly Matt and Evan in Faith & Fidelity jumped in the sack and both never had a gay relationship before, this in comparison is a walk in the park and more realistic IMO. The thing that made me raise a brow in the first book was how insanely quick both guys gave into their attraction considering neither of them had relationship with a man before and went their whole lives as heterosexuals and Evan was grieving the death of his wife on top of it. But the chemistry, sexual tension and emotions were all there and carried a lot of depth so it managed to win me over. And I'm one who usually NEVER likes insta-lust but Tere Michaels managed to pull it off. So much so I was willing to over look the contrived pacing and that never happens. It's testament to her skill in writing likable relatable characters with a lot of emotion.
Here it was pretty much the same thing, but both Griffin and Jim are openly gay men. So what made me a little confused and underwhelmed was the complete lack of sex scenes and intimate moments. Where did they go? There was one hurried rushed scene in the beginning and then boom…..*crickets*........nothing.
That really disappointed me. And I can't really count that 2 minute quicky near the end as a sex scene where dude is orgasming randomly when the two barely did anything except pull each other's shirts off. Come on! 😒 Talk about choppy and confusing AF. And I'm not one who counts love scenes, but when comparing this to the first book and the overall quick progress of Jim and Griffin's relationship, this left me wanting. I mean Matt and Evan who are newly gay men were having sex on every surface and enjoying the hell out of each other and exploring boundaries, so you would think these 2 who have been openly gay for their entire adult life wouldn’t have that issue. I just don’t understand why Tere Michaels played it so safe with these two. Instead we have them quickly slip into domesticity without batting an eye, meeting for dinner, lounging on the couch, ‘napping’, cuddling in bed and everything else is alluded to off the page or quickly faded to black. That seriously made my eye twitch. Nothing exciting happens in here outside of Griffin blurting out "I love you" and the whole drama surrounding the movie deal which blows over insanely quickly. The fact that there was pretty much no source of conflict and or plot didn't help matters. The main drama was centered around Griffin's clinging dramatic best friend. I did think both Jim and Griffin were adorable I just wish more time was spent on developing their relationship more. The intimacy and love scenes in this case was very much needed.
I did love the secondary characters, Ed Kelly, Terry Oh and his wife Mimi. Jim and Terry’s banters are HILARIOUS and so quick.

Tere Michael’s humor is on point and so good you can’t help but holler out loud. The one relationship I could have done without though is the drama with Griffin’s “BFF” Daisy Mae Baylor. What an annoying cloying trainwreck. I saw it from a mile away that this character is as phony and self-absorbed as her quivering pouty mouth. I found her to be such a wet napkin. She’s a walking stereotype who treats Griffin as her “gay pet” arm candy who always needs to be at her beck and call and handle her emotional meltdowns. Toxic much? The emotional manipulation was insane and tested my patience. I found her as vile as Trigg Ingersoll, the preppy oily douchebag who is the murder suspect in Jim’s case. So it was satisfying to see Griffin realize how selfish and unreliable she is and cutting the strings in that unhealthy relationship.
I definitely want to see how Matt and Evan are faring so I will definitely keep reading this series. Don't need to ask me twice. Here's to hoping for more yummy sexy times and hilarious dialogue!

Okay, somehow I either forgot to read this or skipped it entirely because I don't remember the story at all, and I thought for sure I'd gobbled down the whole series in ebook form already...
That said, I really did like it and honestly I liked the story a bit more than the first one as it wasn't centered entirely on the relationship angst. But, while the sex was hot I just didn't feel the emotional connection between the MCs as heavily as I did Matt & Evan. And that's probably unfair to compare them because both of these guys are out and know their own minds and are comfortable in their skins...and again, it probably could be the narration.
I should have listened to my own warning that I would probably not like the audio but I thought, hey, it's a new couple and I'm not as attached (once I realized I hadn't read it) and everyone deserves a second chance. So, yeah, again with the same voices for all characters and an almost flat performance. (Well, until near the end when the emotions run high; JP Handler ramped it up a notch for those scenes - as well it should be given the drama.)
Still happy I listened to it; not likely to listen to any more of the series...although I haven't marked them as read I am relatively sure I DID read them previously. I need to get those re-read.

This is a disappointing read just as a standalone book but when read after the emotional, sweet and hot book that is the first one, then it's a complete let down. Lackluster MCs, meh plot with a twist that could work but doesn't, zero emotional depth or engagement and very few and lukewarm sex scenes.
I really missed Evan and Matt's relationship so look forward to catching up with them on the next one and hope for a read that justice to the excellent beginning this series.

This book is about Jim, a character who became friends with Matt in Faith & Fidelity. It had a very different feel from Faith and Fidelity, yet it still had the distinctive flavor of a Tere Michaels novel. It had characters with substance and personality and real world issues. It had me sad and angry and frustrated and smiling. I liked the little reconnect we had with the characters from Faith and Fidelity. This book doesn't need a sequel, but I'd enjoy reading more about Jim and Griffin. I'd rack this up as another win for Tere Michaels.

I thought Love & Loyalty was going to be more angtsy but then it sort of fizzled at the end. It made for a less than satisfactory resolution.
I didn't understand why Jim wasn't into relationships. He was a nice guy and very caring so it was beyond me how he couldn't find anybody. And he got together with Griffin so easily that whatever issues he had, didn't seem believable.
There was almost no sexual tension and the love scenes were just blah. Definitely not the best in the series.

For me, Tere Michaels’ Love & Loyalty was a case of reading the perfect book at the perfect moment in time. It’s hard to put into words exactly that I was feeling when I started this book; the closest I can come is to say that because of things going on in my personal life, I was feeling this odd jumble of emotions that were grounded in happiness and nostalgia and utter relaxation, but also tinged by exhaustion and sadness and some frustration. I’m certain that if I had read the same book two days ago (or two days from now, for that matter) I would’ve had a completely different reaction to the story. Not better. Not worse. Just… different. As it was, however, I was in the perfect frame of mind to put myself in an author’s hands and get lost in the pages of a new book for a few hours.
And so I loved this book.
We first met Jim (going incognito using his full name, James) near the end of Faith & Fidelity when he picked up a lonely, rejected, horny Matt Haight in a dingy bar in Manhattan. The two men went back to Jim’s hotel room, fooled around a little, talked a little, and parted in the morning as friends. Though it was only a small part in the book, I instantly liked Jim’s character - he was open, friendly, compassionate, and loyal to a fault. He was also clearly emotionally devastated by the worst case of unrequited love I’ve seen in a long while.
Unfortunately, Love & Loyalty doesn’t start out much better for Jim – his work stress is through the roof, his relationship with his family is strained, he’s not sleeping or eating well, and his best friend (subject of the aforementioned unrequited love) is now blissfully married... to a woman. He may not admit it, but Jim is goddamned lonely. So when Griffin pops into Jim’s life, the man is like breath of fresh air. A Hollywood screenwriter, Griffin is talented, bold, funny, thoughtful, and sweetly sentimental. Jim may not immediately trust the man, but he can’t deny the growing spark between them.
I thought Jim was a really, really sweet character, but he wasn’t the same guy in Love & Loyalty that he was in Faith and Fidelity. In the first book, he seemed confident and in control in his romantic encounter with Matt. Smooth. Funny. His actions with Matt were sweet and caring, but there was nothing tentative about them. Jim knew what he wanted and – so long as Matt was on the same page – he planned to get it. Er… get some, as the case may be.
In this book, however, Jim’s first date with Griffin is filled with glowers, glares, one-word responses and painfully awkward moments. Where was my casual, take charge guy!? It didn’t make me like him any less, but it was definitely not the same. What’s worrisome is that I couldn’t tell if Ms. Michaels was deliberately trying to show another aspect of Jim’s character, or if she just forgot who she initially created him to be. Personally, I think it’s the latter, but you can feel free to disagree with me.
In the end though, it didn’t matter. I loved both of the characters and the attraction between the two of them was so dang adorable I practically got butterflies in my stomach from proximity to all their happiness! I know that the entire story only took place over a couple of weeks and the fact that Griffin and Jim fell in love during this time and under these circumstance should feel rushed or forced or something, but it doesn’t. It feels like a smooth slide into warmth and security and… home.
Too syrupy?! I apologize. ;)
And there was plenty of other things to enjoy about this book as well. Jim’s friends were all great secondary characters. They were kind and concerned, a little pushy and a lot loving – exactly the kind of friends everyone should be so lucky to have. The humour and dialogue were well-written (enough to make me laugh out loud several times), and the conflict was resolved to my complete satisfaction. There were also a few deeply poignant moments, and lessons about family and friends and life that were worth internalizing. I’m not at all ashamed to admit that touched me deeply and moved me to tears. Perhaps most importantly, there was also a sweet happily ever after that left me with a pleasant buzzing feeling in my heart region (and there ain’t nothin’ wrong with that).
Verdict: Overall, I found Love & Loyalty to be quietly beautiful. It was sweetness and light, with just the right touch of heart break and loss to keep it from being entirely fluffy. It’s definitely a book worth reading. More, it’s a book worth sharing.

“Wanna lean leisurely?”
James Shea, 45, homicide detective living for his career. When the murderer of 17-year old Carmen Kelly is found not guilty, Jim becomes close to the victim’s father Ed, watching him lose his wife too. Jim feels great responsibility towards Ed, steps in to take care of him and meets Griffin.
Griffin Drake, a Hollywood screenplay-writer wanting to do a movie about the Kelly’s. He and his best friend, actress Daisy, have an invitation from Ed to try and convince him. Jim is there to help and protect Ed.
When Griffin finds himself with a writer’s block he makes an appointment with Jim to talk about the case. They have sex the first night and Griffin ends up staying longer than planned. They start an easy kind of a relationship and Jim finds himself liking having Griffin in his house.
“You know, I get he's hot and that whole manly macho thing you find so appealing, but flying to Seattle? That's a hell of a booty call.”
There is not that much drama in this book, a bit between Griffin and Daisy but there is a whole lot of emotion.
It was a nice read, funny even and I liked the yentas of The Heterosexual Power Cabal.
IMO this book should have just been a spin off and not book 2 in this series, because besides Jim knowing Matt, nothing in this book had any effect on Evan & Matt’s story.

Going into this, I was looking forward to reading James story. I wanted to read about Matt and Evan, but I treated it as if it were a separate series. I already knew James a little bit and I liked him. Griffin took a bit longer to get to know, but I ended up loving him even more. He was a lot of fun.
But even with the open mind, I still ended up being somewhat disappointed by this. Griffin and Jim got along great and their relationship reminded me of what Matt and Evan's was like in the beginning. But with the added benefit of sex. Seeing as Jim and Griffin were not new to this, it makes sense that they got to the sex a lot faster. But I didnt feel that they got past the buddy-pals stage. The story went by pretty quickly and when Jim first told Griffin that he loved him I was so shocked. I thought, "Already?" But then I looked at my progress and realized I was about 3/4 done the book. I was still waiting for the story to get started, but it was actually winding down. It just felt so short and insubstantial.
I feel like this could have been great with more time and more development of Jim and Griffin's relationship. They never really had any tender moments. They had a lot of great moments, but nothing really displaying a deeper love. It felt rushed, but I still enjoyed it. They were greater characters and I enjoyed the side-stories. I really look forward to getting back to Matt and Evan though.

I love Evan and Matt more but Griffin is such a fun character and Jim tempers him well. This one moves faster and that's to be expected since Jim and Griffin are finding love not navigating the same issues that Matt and Evan have. I look forward to reading more about them.

This story did something I thought was impossible... I actually think that it's an even better story than Faith & Fidelity, and that story is still among my top favourites. Just goes to show how wonderful an author is Tere Michaels.
In many ways this story was grittier? It had more of an edge than I remember from F&F, but that in no way detracted from the story; if anything it heightened what was happening between Jim and Griffin.
There were so many instances where I was nearly overcome, okay I actually had to put the book aside 'cause I coulnd't see the pages; so much emotion that scenes and events evoked. All in a marvelous way though. There was an incredible emotional connection with the characters ~ Ed Kelly... I loved that man! And Jim and Griffin ~ wow. Watching them as the freight train of attraction came their way was... stunning. I could feel how at sea they felt, but I could also feel the lightness, the joy that began to seep into their hearts.
The story would not be complete without Jim's friends: Terry and Mimi, oh those two cracked me up ~ especially the text messaging and subsequent phone calls. Love them both!
And when I realized that Jim was actually connected to Matt from Faith & Fidelity I was tickled pink... 'cause I remember him!
Now both these books are on my re-read list and I don't think that I'll be waiting too long to do so.
If you've never read Faith & Fidelity by Tere Michaels and you pick up Love & Loyalty, good for you. But don't cheat yourself out of an experience that will leave you feeling all wonderful inside. And both books do that fantastically well!

Now both these books are on my re-read list and I don't think that I'll be waiting too long to do so.
If you've never read Faith & Fidelity by Tere Michaels and you pick up Love & Loyalty, good for you. But don't cheat yourself out of an experience that will leave you feeling all wonderful inside. And both books do that fantastically well!

The downside of loving, absolutely loving, a first in the series is that there is the almost unavoidable situation of being disappointed in the sequel. Unfortunately this was the case.
Mind you: Love & Loyalty was not a bad book. On the contrary. It was a beautifully written and engaging story of two seemingly polar opposites finding love.
Michaels knows how to write, she knows how to make her descriptions real and her characters likable and alive. You can’t help but feel invested in the characters in her world.
I really liked following the personal and romantic journey of police officer on the verge of a nervous break down, Jim Shea, and the perennially disheveled, best friend/side kick to a starlet, Griffin Drake.
But the story didn’t have the rawness and the reality that Faith & Fidelity had. The relationship between the men seemed to take a giant leap, from one point to the next and I felt like I was playing catch up to understand why these two men fell for each other. Moreover: I couldn’t recognize Jim, whom we had met as Matt’s one night stand. He seemed like a completely different person. Also: the Hollywood side plot fell flat and was completely unnecessary.
Still: even though I had some issues with the plot, Love & Loyalty is a wonderfully written book.
And I can’t wait for the reunion with Matt and Evan in the next book in the series!

This book kinda feels like it’s only vaguely tied in with the first book in the series. It really could be a stand alone. Other than one phone call back to Mark, this book takes place in a whole ‘nother city with a completely different cast of characters. Plus it really didn’t feel like the same Jim we met in NY running away from his best friend, and the man he’s in love with, getting married. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the book, I did, it just wasn’t anything I expected based off of our introduction to Jim in Faith & Fidelity.
Detective James “Jim” Shea is a devoted Seattle homicide detective. He is the job, he’s rarely home and when he is it’s to hopefully sleep. He does the work and rarely does a case get under his skin. This one though, this one did. They knew they had the bastard dead to rights for strangling the girl, but because of his golden boy status and the fact that she was a runaway turning tricks justice was not served. Losing the case ended up killing her mother and Jim’s done his best to be there for the victim’s father, Ed, since. Everyone familiar with the case knows how much of a gross miscarriage of justice it was, there’s just nothing they can do about it. Jim’s lost himself in even more work and his friends, the Heterosexual Cabal are determined to break him out of it some how. They all wish they could do something to hook him up with someone, give him something else in his life.
Griffin Drake is a successful Hollywood screenwriter. He’s made a name for himself penning action packed summer blockbusters. But he wants more out of his writing. This new plan is the perfect opportunity to get both himself and his best girlfriend out from under the studio boss’ thumb. Griffin is familiar with the tragic case and is going to do his best to win over everyone involved to finally let someone tell their side of the story. But first he has to also convince Jim who was lead detective on the case and become Ed’s close friend. Ed’s has asked Jim to be involved in making it all happen. Not usually lucky in love himself Griffin ends up surprised at how easy it is to get along with the man and sparks my just fly.
So I really liked Griffin and Jim together. They’re cute in their own awkward meets surly way. I liked how Griffin’s energy gets Jim to open up a bit and how Griffin finds the strength to take charge and give Jim a little bit of relief from always being the leader. This is one of those super sweet romances without any real rough edges. The two just blend together and find a natural harmony with each other. The support is there and I never really questioned that everything would work out for them.
All the drama happens in Griffin and Daisy’s relationship. Talk about screwed up! Living in LA myself there were parts of this that rung true and other parts that were a little “stereotypical” Hollywood without really being the reality of the way it works. For a fiction story they were fine and enjoyable in that they added tension to this otherwise sweet romance. I enjoyed Griffin waking up to the reality of his friendship and realizing he needed to move on no matter how painful it was. There was a lot of growth for Griffin in that moment.
I have to admit I adore the Heterosexual Cabal. I know we don’t spend a lot of time with them or anything, but they all so clearly care about Jim and it’s just such a funny name for a group of friends. I think a large part of my enjoyment comes out of the way Jim thinks about them in his head. There’s this exasperated fondness for them all as if he can’t quite wrap his head around the way they all think en-mass. It’s was cute and funny and made me giggle all the time.
This is a light sweet read that I enjoyed despite it not quite fitting in with the Jim I had in my head after book one of the series. I mean Jim certainly got over his obsessed love feelings for Ben pretty dang quick and with little angst at all. There really wasn’t a lot of pining or questioning his relationship with Griffin based on those past emotions. It was more a convenient plot device to get Jim to NY for book one and then became obsolete in its’ need in book two. I don’t mind too much since I liked these guys, but everything came together so smoothly and easily for them it felt a little odd to have Jim never really address it.
Still I enjoyed the book and am curious to see what happens with our couple from book one in book three. I will be continuing on in the series of course. They writing is very enjoyable and is a wonderful escape from reality when you need it.
