Truly one of the most painful things I've read in awhile. Four hundred pages of characters being stupid, and "self-sacrificing" in the name of LOVE. Uh, sorry folks, that's not love. You don't marry someone because you don't want to break their heart.

Kugy, a girl who the author loves to repeatedly tell us is brave, and quirky, and doesn't care what anyone thinks, apparently cares A LOT what other people think, to the point where she does a ridiculous amount of hiding. Least brave heroine ever.

This book feels like something I would have written in high school in that every character speaks in the same affected "quirky" way, and in that it's fucking awful. I wanted to read something light and fluffy while getting my hair done today, but my goodness, this was an insult to my intelligence. DNF'd at 30%. ...more

A sweet story about Kugi and Keenan, one a story teller and one a painter. Their path to becoming a couple is complicated. The childlike hope of telling fairy tales and painting for a living clash with a reality to have a career, a job and a paycheck.

The transition from childhood to adulthood while maintaining childlike creativity, joy and hope is a bumpy struggle.

Conflict happens when parental expectations, assumptions and well-meaning friends complicate things further.

I picked this up through one of those $2 credits on select books if you subscribe to some Amazon list and didn't expect much from it. I am so glad I picked it up. It is a different take on the romance genre, at least for me - someone who doesn't typically read romance. It is well written and feels authentic, though it's not a depiction of a dating culture I'm familar with. This is a light, warm, beach read for a bright little pick-me-up, which is exactly what I was looking for. Koogi and Keenan ...more

This books is beautiful beyond words. In its joy, but also in its heartache. Who hasn’t known what it’s like to waiver between dream and reality? Love and duty? Desire and responsibility? These characters walk a tightrope full of universal questions. It is all too easy to relate as we take the loving, and sometimes painful, journey with them. Life isn’t as simple as finding your soulmate. It rests precariously on the choices that either move you closer to that future together, or keep you apart ...more

I loved the start and am approximately halfway but I have to admit defeat. I'm just not in the mood for all this angst, tbh, so I'm giving up though I may decide to pick it back up in the future.

If you love soapies, you'd most probably enjoy this novel but I don't have patience for them anymore so I'll have to let this one go too.

I thought it didn't exist, but here it is! I found it. The NEVERENDING STORY.
description

I don't know why I punished myself and read it all in a single day, but perhaps I was thinking that the story HAD to end sometime.

The book spans over a time period of four years. FOUR YEARS.
Now don't get me wrong. This can be done and done well. In Anita Shreve's "The Last Time They Met," the story spanned throughout the characters' whole lives just about. But this book seemed to go on and on and you knew where it wa

OKAY WHERE TO BEGIN WITH THIS BOOK.

This is one of my favorite book ever and I will always want this book.
They also adapt this book into two-parts movies and the movies are as perfect as the book can be.

This book centers around two young people each with different hobbies and ambitions. They are the epitome of their own dreams. The girl likes to write and the boy likes to draw. Together they dream to make their own story book. They would complete each other. But sometimes the reality is not goin

I really enjoyed this story. It was definitely one that kept me picking up my book every spare minute when I could read. I had it on my Kindle for a while before I read it (so many books, so little time) but one day I decided to go back and read something that I'd had for a while and I randomly picked this one. I'm really glad I did!

This was probably one of the Amazon deals, or one of the free monthly choices for Prime members. I don't usually choose books that take place in a country with whic

Better than LaLa Land

Similar story about dreamers, with a love triangle (or two) but these are the most delightful characters, complete with endearing quirks, family life (cousins, siblings and parents) and friend groups in addition to their dream of creating.

They meet at college and instantly connect. I found myself very drawn to them, their dreams and their uniqueness. (Fellow aliens, as their friends refer to them.) They also have big hearts, and a common desire to do good in the world.

Disclosure: I would like to thank Goodreads and Amazon for the copy of Paper Boats by Dee Lestari (translated by Tiffany Tsao).

I gave this book 3 stars out of 5, which according to the goodreads scale means: “I liked it!” This was an enjoyable book to read, but not life changing. The characters are believable and their life stories and adventures, though complex, are believable. It is actually refreshing to read a romance novel where the characters go through multiple realistic problems. My stru

“The Heart Wants What the Heart Wants.” Is the refrain I heard in my mind as I read Dee Lestari’s coming of age novel about two young people who met in college in Indonesia. Kugy the young woman is unique and so different from her friends at school. She is a talented writer of fairy tales, but feels that it is not a practical way to make a living so she only writes for herself. Keenan, the young man is an artist who wants to pursue his art, but his father wants him to take over the family busine ...more

This Indonesian NA romance set at the turn of the millennium hit me right in the feels, complete with the ~struggling artist and complicated™ moments. It's told in multi POV so a lot of texture and context there, but I thought plot overstayed and overall story could have been shorter. There's the matter of it coming across as YA at times, so if that's not your thing... WHY NOT? Anyway, the friendship and family dramas can be relatable, and the '99~'03 nostalgic throwback can make the emotional c ...more

Bittersweet with a happy ending...

First loved the ending because it turned out the way I hoped...

Secondly, I want to be a spy for Neptune, too! The female lead was amazingly weird, and I loved how she developed throughout. Yes, as we age, we sometimes have to give up dreams, but there are those rare few who know what they will be from the beginning and pursue it with all their heart, through trial and tribulations untold.

It was a privilege to read this book when I won it from Goodreads. It int

The overall story isn't bad at this point but it feels like it should be starting to resolve itself...then I look down and see I'm only 35% of the way through. I do t know how much longer I can deal with this will they get together story line. It feels like they are at the climax were they should be getting together but then what will the other half of the book be about? This might be a book I quit early.

If this wasn't translated I would give this book 2 stars, but I think a lot of Dee Lestari's writing lost its style through translation. I liked the ever present art theme throughout the story, and how the main characters interacted together. I thought the banter between the friends was very realistic. Unfortunately, besides our main character, Kugy, the characters were flat, especially the men and Keenan's love interests. There is a part towards the end that is infuriating! Not sure if it was this book or it was the translation. The plot is more like a cheesy teen flick than actual Dee Lestari’s novel. Love triangle for university students anyone? And of course one of them had to be a mixed-blooded, a damsel in distress and an antagonist in the form of a rich girl looking for love. Sounds like sinetron plot already? Because I feel that it is, and might it be written for that purpose?

The starting was already clumsy, the middle was even worse and the ending? 👋🏻

Amazing

Look, this book is too good to pass up. It took a slow start but before I knew it, I'd been sucked into the vortex of heartfelt fiction! The characters are relatable, lovable, and cute. And the conflicts struck me as if I were caught in the middle myself. It all made for a beautiful ending, one that helped me finish the final page with a content smile. I’m not sure I can put a finger on exactly what it is about this book that made me fall in love with it so deeply. Thirty pages in, I was hooked. Then my heart was systematically torn apart. I read the entirety of this book on a constant state of heartache. It made the characters even more relatable. If you’ve ever had a dream, you will find yourself in this characters. Love, innocent and noble

I didn't realize that Ms Lestari was Indonesian when I started reading this novel, so I found the style of her writing very intriguing. It is is a beautiful and somewhat twisted love story that I found hard to put down. The characters are developed and the love is pure. This is not a typical romance novel, but a story about friends who are there for each other. I found Kugy to be a delightful and unique person. As I suppose is typical of the way these people were raised,

This is the first finding romance book I have ever read (other than Gone With the Wind). It was well translated and well written, yes, just not my kind of story. I greatly enjoyed being dunked into a different cultural pool, and the characters were entertaining. I got a bit sleepy in the middle; I wanted the romance part over and to get back to the art, I guess. I could read that others would love the build up Lestari created. I know this is a good book, and I did keep reading it. I look forward ...more

This was a lovely novel about love, loss, and finally coming to grips with reality. It took me longer than usual to finish, however, when I realized that Kugy and Keenan's story was going to be dragged through months and years of their trying to deny their love for each other, for no apparent reason. The story was beautiful, but it just didn't feel realistic in why they kept dancing around their love and pulling others into their worlds, just to disappoint them in the end. I truly felt bad for L ...more

This was a sweet but frustrating story of two people who should be together. I liked the characters and how everything came together in the end but I feel like much of what happened could have been avoided if the main characters were honest with their feelings upfront. Regardless, it was a fun read.

I thought the writing was a little choppy sometimes and something was a little off - like maybe it was a translation. Then I realized it probably was a translation (duh). After realizing this, I didn'
