This book is a delightful dip into cricket and football past, summoning up visions of long summer evenings watching contest of leather against willow, at times it’s hard to tell if read Swanton’s fine writing style without automatically mentally associating to your own cricketing/rugby memories. Swanton feels a fair voice in the topics he covers, clearly outlining his view but always giving the other side of things some hearing. Ultimately the book didn’t though consistently click with me as multiple of the references and discussion was of its time, meaning it didn’t necessarily hold full resonance. Yet the more surprising thing than some elements not standing the test of time, is how much of it does when discussing sport at a minimum of a five decade interlude.
