A great new edition of two of the most important sources on the life of Charlemagne and three on his son Louis The Pious. The texts translated include Einhard, Notker, Ermoldus, Thegan and The Astronomer. All of the texts are accompanied by individual introductions and explanatory notes. This edition provides an easy way to read these important Carolingian texts under one cover.

Recommends it for: History students
Read this for the author's class and the detail in the translation, as well as the prefaces to each, is incredibly helpful in understanding the context of each "Life".
