OUR STORY
A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.

This is a fantastic read for someone who wants to travel the globe without going anywhere. This book enables you to watch a bunch of nature documentaries without looking at a computer screen.

I like how much biodiversity the author represents in this book. I also like how the author divides up geographic locations and species of interests according to the months/years of the Gregorian calendar; doing so helps the reader conceptualize what it could be like to visit a different locale every week of the year and absorb the fascinating wonders of the natural world in the process.

The author is a bit inconsistent in how he rates how easy it is/would be to reach the different locales mentioned and to see the different species represented in the book.

I had this on the bookshelf for a decade, but never got round to read it, so of course it took a pandemic for me to finally dig into it. I am so glad I did. It's well researched, with plenty of fun facts I didn't know before. This book had great insight and was written in a way that you could flick through it throughout the year.

Thank you Lonely Planet for understanding my travel desires. This is a travel bible for those interested in wildlife travel. Pleased to see some of the places I've already been listed, and a great resource for thinking of where to go next. I'll always be currently reading this book!

This book offers some great tips about major wildlife destination, well-known and not so well-known ones. It certainly does not cover all of them, but I really like how it points out different wildlife sites to visit through-out the year, telling why certain times are better than others.
