En une semaine, Aurélien, un homme ordinaire, va progressivement disparaître. Il est de plus en plus hors champ, perdant jusqu'à sa voix, son odeur et son ombre. Au fur et à mesure de cette genèse à rebours, il sort aussi de la pensée et de la mémoire des autres, même de ses proches. Cet effacement intensif s'opère au grand jour, dans l'agitation de la ville, à l'aune de tous ces naufragés qu'on ne regarde plus et qui ne comptent pour personne.

About the author

Germain received a doctorate in philosophy from the Sorbonne, and taught it at the French School in Prague from 1987 to 1993.
She claimed that philosophy, 'a continuous wonder' to her, was also too 'analytical', and she switched from Descartes and Heidegger to Kafka and Dostoevsky.
She grew up in rural France, in an area steeped in mythology and folklore, and she admitted 'that the power of place had a huge effect on me but it was an unconscious one'. That her prose was 'related to the earth ... the soil, the peasants, the trees', was revealed in her first novel, The Book of Nights (1985), which won six literary awards.
The second novel, Night of Amber (1987) continued from the first, and was followed by Days of Anger (1989). Despite this three-part structure, Germain claimed that she was 'trying only to express an obsessive image and to explain it to myself. I have no pretensions to creating a mythos. Each book begins with an image or a dream and I try to express that and give it coherence.'

This is the second novel I read from French author Sylvie Germain. The main theme is fairly similar to the first novel I just read from her, but it is treated differently. In this story, the author focused on one leading character, who's disappearing physically within one week until nobody seems to notice him, see him, or even remember his existence.

While the first novel read is a probable fiction, this story is unlikely story. The disappearance of the leading character should be treated like a metaphor about an individual, who suddenly dies and its impact on its family, friends, and colleagues.

I understand the main storyline, but the author focused so much on the 1 week that there was a lack of characters development to better know the leading and secondary characters. It was monotonous and dark book to read.

Hors Champs, c'est l'histoire d'une disparition, celle d'Aurélien, que les gens bousculent dans la rue. Puis ce sont ses collègues qui le snobent, sa fiancée, sa famille. Tous le trouvent flou... Et ce n'est que le début.

Sylvie Germain signe un court ouvrage qui ressemble plutôt à une nouvelle. Aurélien, déjà un peu perdu dans sa vie sans saveur (lui qui voulait faire du théâtre se retrouve à faire un boulot alimentaire). Déjà sa famille est amputée, les cadres photos vides chez sa mère pour des grands parents trop vite disparus dans les tourments de l'Histoire. L'auteur en profite donc pour broder des situations comiques, navrantes ou poignantes, et démontre qu'on disparaît si facilement dans nos sociétés actuelles, comme le prouve ce pauvre bougre, sans travail qui impose sa présence sans pour autant que les gens s'arrêtent sur sa personne. Il est juste dommage qu'on ne ressente pas plus de sympathie pour le héros, car une fois envolé comme un courant d'air, nous ne nous demandons même pas pu il a bien pu disparaître.

De beaux passage sur ce qu'est et ce que ressent un lecteur, un passionné de littérature. Il y a quelque chose de troublant mais aussi de décevant avec ce livre.
