In this audio release, David tells of his adventures during the trip to New Guinea: being an onlooker at a formal lovemaking ceremony, seeing the skills of ritual axe making, trying to master pidgin English, and witnessing a 'sing sing' at which hundreds of tribesmen came together from all parts of the country. Specially recorded for audio, the magical voice of the master ...more

It is such a soulful bliss to simply listen to the voice of David Attenborough. We have all been enthralled by the narrative voice of this man in numerous jungle documentaries. It was indeed mesmerising to listen to his accounts of stories from his jungle days. This audiobook is based on his adventure to New Guinea to capture the birds of paradise on camera for the first time. We are served with enchanting stories of his encounters with the aboriginal people and their livelihood. The excitement ...more

This is a good memoir about David Attenborough as he explores New Guinea looking for the bird of paradise. They find and collect the bird, but only after working through the leach-filled swamps of the island. The birds may be beautiful and fascinating, but their habitat is NOT paradise!

Listened to as an audiobook, read by the author. Attenborough's voice is mesmerizing so I highly recommend the audiobook if you can get it.

Attenborough talks about his journey into New Guinea to film and record birds of paradise, and his encounters with the people there.

Great as a short, non-fiction biographical story. Very well told.

It was a real delight to hear this brief audiobook narrated by author David Attenborough, a naturalist. His quest in New Guinea for the Bird of Paradise and other exotic avians is an exploration into Edenic beauty and the culture clash of Westerner confronted with inscrutable natives.
