I've been reading this book on and off for a few days. Not a fan of this style of writing. I had hoped to hear some great tales about old times in Oregon. Well, there's a few of those but there's also just as many interviews with old-timers who couldn't remember much. Weird.

I live in Oregon and enjoyed reading about history of various real-life characters that date back to earlier times ... a mix of people from various facets of life, but who had lives worth telling.

Some intriguing characters came to life

This is an older book with lots of short, interesting essays that come from the author's travels across Oregon in the 1930s-1960s, and from his interviews with interesting, authentic characters he met in his travels all over the state. It offers a fascinating popular history of the state in the personal stories of its people. I really enjoy this author's writing style. It's an older style, and it's certainly of its time, but I really liked it. Friedman writes with a comfortable elegance, without being stilted, overly ornamented or too antique. I really want to read more by this author so I can figure out how he does it.

How it all started, how Friedman got started in Oregon and became a writer, and historian. Some many great stories, I will share some of the on Facebook. Parts of Young Chief Joseph's article, “An Indian’s Views of Indian Affairs,” [Young Joseph] North American Review, April 1879 issue, is included.
