Poor. The main character is unbearable. The book is packed with cliches and in some paces contains rather unfortunate political ramblings. The title remains the best of this book.

Great psychological novel with unexpected turns! Highly recommended if you're into psychology. I know the author even signed into a mental facility in order to be able to write accurate information. ...more

There was in fact a moment when I was going crazy!!!
First, I applaud the writer -what a brain!-, so smart and knowledgeable!! I also applaud the nurses and staff that work in these centers. It requires a great sacrifice and love for human kind to perform these tasks.
I did like Alice Gould, her wit and her answers to any problem. I also love books where I learn about topics new to me. Very entertaining, and hard to put away. Great book!!

Just... wow!

It starts like other stories I've heard about a detective going to a sanatory, and has the cliche of not knowing if the protagonist is crazy, but add to it details that became it really confusing, and even knowing everything at the end, I'm not sure if the protagonist should be kept or not on the sanatory.

I felt scared of knowing the truth at the end, and that never happened to me in any other book before.

It was very informative as well entertained, learn a lot about the kind of people that live in those places and de kind of illness that your brain may already have XD
Pd: you may fall in love with the protagonist...

DNF. Excessively pithy descriptions, insufferable Mary Sue protagonist, overall unjustifiably taxing read.

Somewhat disappointing. The concept is great and the fact that the author admitted himself into a mental facility to do research for the book is very encouraging, and we do get some good glimpses of what it is like to be in a mental hospital in rural Spain, but this book suffers from quite a number of issues. First, the main character is arrogant beyond belief, has no flaws and is apparently the most intelligent person in the novel, surpassing the intellect of probably all other characters combi ...more

The title refers to a respectful manner in which the author called the mentally ill in an asylum.
The novel is about a woman who was admitted to the clinic to solve a crime ... but as it progresses the story makes you doubt whether it is she really who she say to be or if everything is part of her mental illness. Its a very smart way to portray that we all have some madness and that no line is completely straight.

Excellent description of psychiatric patients. The novel has a love story to tell while describing the live inside a psychiatric institution the so called MANICOMIO. Torcuato Luca de Tena received a "Psichiatrist Honoris Causa" degree after the publication of this book.

exelente descripcion de los pacientes psiquiatricos. La novela cuenta una historia de amor, y la vida en un manicomio. Torcuato Luca de Tena recibio el titulo de "Psiquiatra Honoris Causa" por este libro.

The author had the opportunity to exploit the story, but he failed. It was a normal novel, slow.. At least half of the book is not relevant for the story and that makes it sometimes a little boring. Some chapters are interesting, you can immerse within. He has an exceptional (and still sometimes boring) capacity to describe. The main character has a charming personality. I had great expectations about this book because of the reviews I had read, but the novel didn't reach them. ...more

Touching, amusing, lovely, thrilling and thought-provoking story. The author immerses us in a supposedly marginalized, hopeless and disaffected world: a mental hospital. The readers will experience a bittersweet feeling when facing the surprise of sanity and dementia just being separated by a very thin and blurred line.
A book to be recommended!

It's an interesting story that questions the sanity of sane people and the insanity of the insane, also shows how terrible some mental diseases can be... I forget exactly why, but i did enjoy it a lot... ...more

Amazing read, heart-breaking story with an amazing balance achieved by raw and awful events told in a beautiful, poetic, elegant prose.

Took me a while to get into it, but eventually it sucks you in and you start to question what is true and what is not.
