This book collection starts off with the first real Ultimates - Ultimate X-Men crossover in Ultimate X-Men, Vol. 5: Ultimate War, in which the now released Magneto goes all-out against America which also exposes Xavier's actions forcing the Ultimates to go after the X-men! Marvel just can't seem to get the X-Men vs the Ultimates/Avengers stories right and this story continues the trend and it's only the superb characterisations of the Ultimates that makes this volume readable!

Ultimate X-Men, Vol. 6: Return of the King which is a massive Magneto wants the world for himself and mutants, so let's kill all the humans bis story is quite good but the shine is very much rubbed off of it for copying so so so may mainstream Marvel universe X-Men story concepts and ideas. 7 out of 12 overall.

This series may be starting to grow on me. Or maybe Millar's writing is improving? In any case, I liked this better than the previous two volumes, though I still enjoyed Millar's The Ultimates much better.

It's also a fine example of how to do a proper collected volume. There was an Ultimate War miniseries, which is included in this collection at the appropriate point in the storyline. Too often I've read collections that stick to a single title only, whether the story crossed over into other titles or not.

High point for me was probably the last two issues, where we get some lovely character moments: the scene with Beast's parents, the bit between Cyclops and Wolverine, the exchange between Thor and Jean, and of course the Xavier/Magneto scene.

Obviously, this is volume three, and you're better off starting with volume one if you can manage it. Ultimate X-Men is no Ultimates, or even Ultimate Spider-Man. But you could certainly do worse. Recommended!

"What? Are you insane? I regard Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver as the most treacherous little toads that ever walked the earth.
Their only decent contribution to the world was almost killing that feeble-minded mother of theirs during childbirth all those years ago.
They're despicable."

It is probably not much of a stretch that when looking at the history of Marvel Comics, Spider-Man and the X-Men are likely the two most popular properties that Marvel has at their disposal (or at least were before the advent of the MCU and the Avengers based films.) Spider-Man was a success from day one because Lee and Ditko presented readers with a hero who was so human, unlike the likes of Superman or Batman (in my estimation, the closest DC ever got to what was so charming about the early Spider-Man was the Flash.) The X-Men had a harder road to success as the original Lee/Kirby incarnation didn't really take off and it wasn't until Chris Claremont started writing the book (and eventually with art from John Byrne) that the book really took off. When Marvel decided to create a new comics universe based on their properties (the "Ultimate" universe) it makes sense that they would start with Spider-Man and the X-Men when kickstarting this universe.

This collection represents the end of Mark Millar's choppy run on Ultimate X-Men, which features the X-Men/Ultimates(Avengers) crossover Ultimate War and then his last Ultimate X-Men arc which I believe was his attempt to tie up all of the loose ends from his run, with varying levels of success. Unfortunately, in true Millar style, his attempts at cleaning up the mess end up much like a Roomba attempting to clean a pile of dog shit on a hard wood floor--the shit ends up everywhere and things are worse off than when the robot vacuum showed up.

My primary issue here (and to be honest, from the beginning of Millar's run on the book) is his treatment of Wolverine. I think there is an incorrect notion that even though Wolverine is quick to resort to violence when he finds himself in confrontations, that somehow this means he lacks a moral compass by which he operates. The Marvel-616 Wolverine to this point didn't have a problem maiming people, but at the same time, he operated with a kind of honor and righteousness that made him a "hero." Sure, you personally could see yourself not agreeing with his methods, but you knew he was on the side of angels. Millar, throughout this run, wants us to find Wolverine morally ambiguous, but in attempting to do that, Wolverine comes off as inconsistent, which is odd since I have commented in past reviews that he seems to be relying on readers being familiar with the earlier 616 take on the X-Men. In the first volume, he insinuates that the real reason Wolverine decides not to betray the X-Men as part of Magneto's plan is because he wants to bed Jean Grey (which he does.) There is an event at the end of the previous collection concerning Wolverine that is a driving force in the end of Millar's last arc. But if Wolverine is capable of the thing that drives this subplot, I don't understand why Wolverine just didn't go through with Magneto's plan and take what he wanted. Millar wants us to see Wolverine as having complicated motives for what he does, but all it does is confuse things and leaves quite the mess for Brian Michael Bendis to clean up as he took over the book after the completion of the issues in this collection.

To be honest, I don't have high hopes for Bendis' Ultimate X-Men as he only stewarded the book for a year before handing it over to someone else. Of course, Ultimate Spider-Man contemporaneously published at this time is some of Bendis' best work as a writer. I hope that taking the reins on the other flagship "Ultimate" title didn't lead to a reduction of quality on Ultimate Spider-Man as well. I guess I will soon find out.

Magneto.

Ten, który miał być martwy. Tak obiecywał Xavier. To jak, to w końcu jest? X-men to ci dobrzy, czy źli?

Zdecydowanie moja ulubiona seria, zaraz obok Ultimate Spider-man, jeżeli chodzi o tą odsłonę świata Marvela.

Ok, this was a solid 4 for me, I enjoyed this much more than the past volumes.

While book 1 and 2 were like remixes of the regular X-Men, this brought more to the table. Stakes were much higher, Magneto as a truly terrorist evil villain, Cyclops almost dying. It just felt like there was more to it, more reasons to be reading this series. Or maybe Millar was more commited here, trying harder to deliver a good and engaging story. I confess I'm not perfectly sure of the reasons, but this was a good read, no doubt.

There's still some dumb things, like

Also, great art, specially with Bachalo and Finch. I'm now excited for the next volume, and curious to see how Bendis will approach the series.

Impresionante e imprescindible lectura.

Marvel struck gold when they launched the Ultimate X-Men series. By unshackling the popular characters from four decades of convoluted continuity and starting fresh, they were able to let new fans and old in on the X-Men from ground zero. I've been following this series through these deluxe hardcover collections, which contain roughly a year's worth of individual issues and at least two full story arcs.

The third Ultimate X-Men hardcover collection includes the following issues:

Ultimate War (issues #24-27 and Ultimate War #1-4) - Magneto is alive, contrary to what everyone thought (thanks to Professor X). No one is madder than Nick Fury, who sends his Ultimates after Magneto, the Brotherhood of Mutants and the X-Men. The clash between the X-Men and the Ultimates is epic, and reminds us why we love comics in the first place. Mark Millar's writing is sharp as always, and Chris Bachalo's artwork is incredibly dynamic and stylized.

Return of the King (issues #28-35) - Magneto is back, doing what he does best - killing civilians on a biblical scale. He's got a willing army and nearly unstoppable powers, and the only thing standing in his way are some very battered X-Men...oh, and the Phoenix. Millar has really set the standard for all future Magneto stories, and has personified evil in a way that is truly frightening. Artwork on this run is by David Finch (who keeps getting better) and Adam Kubert (not his best work, unfortunately).

This is easily the most intense and action-packed of the early Ultimate X-Men hardcover collections, and one that all serious X-Men and/or Ultimates fans should check out.

I highly recommend Ultimate X-Men, not only to new X-fans who might be bewildered by the continuity of the older series, but to old school X-Men fans like me. If you keep an open mind, you should find this series quite enjoyable.

I don't recall reading any of these books as single issues, so for all intents and purposes everything in this collection is new to me. And having finished this volume a few days ago I'm pretty certain I won't remember any of it now.
I vaguely recall finding this a bit better than the previous volumes (my brain is deleting this even now...), but there had obviously been a reason I stopped buying the single issues way back when - this book is just. So. BORING!
I don't care about any of the characters, "pacifist" Xavier is just an asshole and Magneto so eeeeevuhl he's nothing but a caricature.
Meh.
The art was mostly okay (some of it even really good), though.

A pretty solid volume. Nothing bad, although nothing that blew me out of the water. I really enjoyed the seamless inclusion of the Ultimates in here, really made the X-men feel like they were part of the Ultimate world, as well as tying the wasp's mutant status all in.

Not sure how I feel about the phoenix force being dragged along. I was really disappointed in how quick and shitty that story arc went in Ultimate X-men so I'm hoping it's being kept alive to do it proper credit. I'm afraid it's just being kept around to be used as a dues ex machina like it was used in here...

Can I say, awesome? Haha, maybe I'm over hyping it now. But uh, perhaps Magneto's increasing dorkiness is endearing him to me. And, as cool as Prof X is? He's creeping me out, which is apparently the intended effect.

Ehehe, I'm such a fangirl for all the mutants. More detailed review is forthcoming.

At least the art improved. But otherwise the story/plot/characters of this run of X-men sucked. It was so bad I will not be checking out further issues of this series. Bleh.
