Jared had promised—
He’d promised to take care of a lot of things this past six months. Estimates on a new security system and steel doors for the clinic, for one thing. Help with the plans to remodel their kitchen at home.
Late nights, working weekends. When had they last sat down together for a decent supper?
A wisp of dark thoughts from the past taunted her. Of a time when rumors had flown about an affair, and whispers had followed in her wake when she walked down the street.
“Love?” Sylvia’s voice sounded like the crack of a whip in the tomblike silence of the hospital. “Don’t crow too loudly, my dear. If he loved you so very much, why would he have been driven into the arms of someone else?”
Getting in his car with another woman at his side, an insidious inner voice whispered. A woman who was dead less than an hour later.

Another bummer
He was in a car wreck and was injured and there was another woman in the car and she died. He's in a coma. She goes through the past as she sits there and it was just weird. The mother in law is just plain mean and has never wanted him to stay married to her. She met him after he had a broken engagement and they dated for quite a while but then his mom said something hateful and the broke up. Within six months he was already engaged to another woman. But they called it off so he went back to her. Already I don't like this guy. Lack of communication too. He comes out of coma and everything is hunky dory and the end. I think I may have to try another author. For sure.

The flow of this story was not what I am used to finding in romance books like these. It definitely veered from the typical "formula"; while this is not necessarily a negative thing, it did leave me feeling *meh* at the end ... which is what I am basing my rating on. The Super Romance line usually has a lot of emotion involved and I personally didn't get that from this story. It will be interesting to see other reactions.
The one thing I really liked was the heroine's commitment to shake off doubt and focus on trust and love for her husband. That is definitely a positive message to walk away with.

Everything has a choice in this life. That includes reading. This Midwest avid reader wanted to enjoy this book with its Minnesota setting. First, I have read books with similar plots - senator's son has an accident and is caught in an compromising situation. Second, I skimmed all THE PAST chapters. While the chapters provided background information, I found the chapters too detailed and difficult to jump back and forth. I could empathize with Jared and Kate; and had a strong dislike for Sylvia Mathers (Jared's mom).
NOTE: see this story was first published January 2009. So I probably have read it before, when I didn't keep track of my reading. I wondered if this story had been included in a boxed set.

Kate, who runs a veterinary clinic, and Jared, who oversees a law clinic for the underserved population, don't have the closest relationship right now. All the water under the bridge is meaningless when Kate receives the call telling her that Jared was severely injured in a car accident--she rushes to his bedside, praying desperately that they will have the opportunity to set things right.

This is such a captivating story. It follows this couple, Jared Mathers and his wife, Dr. Kate Mathers, through their life. Going from the present, where a life and death situation is happening—to the past. A past where a poor girl is working her way through college on grants to become more than she’d been growing up. With a black cloud that had been following her all of her life. A black cloud that would tar the bright, shining life of a young man born to luxury.
All is not as it seems. Neither in the past or present. A real page-turner as the reader sees the situation from several points of view. Jared’s and Kate’s, but also their daughter and Jared’s mother—who never warmed up to Kate for marrying him. Sylvia Mathers’ husband died and left them without much money. She keeps up appearances but expected her children to marry into money to support her lifestyle. An emotional story that pulled me and wouldn’t let go until the end.

Kate is on way to pick up daughter at airport when the call comes to say her husband had been in major car wreck as may not live.
Kate and Jarret had a troubled marriage. Both worked way too many hours at their jobs. Kate was a Veterinarian and Jarret a Lawyer with a regular practice and free clinic. In spite of her mother-in-laws interference they were still married after more than twenty years and had a daughter they both worshipped. Didn’t mean they still didn’t love each other just they didn’t seem to have time for each other.
Kate is on way to pick up their daughter coming home from first year of college when she is called that her husband has been in major wreck and may not have much time. She needs to come to hospital as fast as possible. After she gets there she finds out that the young woman with him is dead and they need to get a name for her.
Thats when her life is turned upside down and bad things start happening..

Great story
This was a great story with a good mystery. Kate, a veterinarian, learns that her husband Jared was involved in a car accident that she passed on her way to pick up their daughter from the airport and rushes to the hospital. There she finds out that a woman was in her husband's car died in the accident. Who was this woman and why was she in his car? Why was her veterinarian clinic and both of them being targeted? The answers must wait until he wakes up.
The author includes Jared and Kate's background and how they met in college and married, even though his mother did her best to keep them separated because of Kate's background and her being poor and their being rich.

Dangerous Lies
They met in college and fell in love. After a rocky start they marry in a little chapel with only 3 friends, his mother was not happy. They had 2 years of school left, his law and hers vet. They get pregnant with twins but the boy didn't survive. After 20 years he finally is able to open a free legal clinic and the threats begin. He ends up with a head injury in the ICU and she is threatened and the vet clinic broken into twice. She is instrumental in catching the culprit. He awakens from his coma and all is well. Great story.

I like this book because Kate lied her husband and need stopped fighting for him.
Jared and Kate has had a lot of ups and downs in their other lives his mother's hate and manipulation only part of it. This book was amazing and had me from page une.

Kate and Jared have loved each other for so so many years and then divorced and this went on for a while. The daughter was heart broken but his mother Sylvia would do anything and everything to keep them apart. But God. He is so good. Enjoy.

Good writing, nice stories
Read this entire series. Although each one was different each was special in its own way. Not crime stories, not wild crazy sex, just nice normal people dealing with problems in their lives the best the can.
Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a nice story that is well written with good character development, good plot lines and nice endings.
