In these stories and novellas he wrote for BLACK MASK and other pulp magazines of the 1920s and 1930s, Dashiell Hammett transformed the American detective story into something original—a medium to explore the jarring textures and revved-up cadences of American life. As a chronicler of this underworld of criminality, he created the Continental Op, the nameless, stoic detect ...more

I started reading this collection while sleep-deprived on a long coach journey and the earlier short stories were just what I wanted - nice, simple mysteries that each closed with the revelation of whodunnit. Later on in the book, the stories have become much richer and more enjoyable to the wakeful brain. 'The Assistant Killer' and 'The Tenth Clue' are good examples of this. While some of these stories were really well done and they were all fun, I was disappointed overall. I knew the author's reputation--which I'm sure rests on his novels--so I was looking forward to reading them. Short stories generally leaving me feeling like something is missing and all but a few of these did, too.

I think I would have enjoyed this collection more if I had some context his progression as a popular author and a writer. The last few stories were excellent, but I probably would have been OK just reading those.

Una recopilación de esas que todo amante de la novela negra clásica debería tener, leer y disfrutar.
No le doy las 5 estrellas que merece por la penosa edición de Serie Negra colmada de erratas que desluce más aún en una edición de lujo como esta.
