I love Don Camillo. And Peppone. And Smilzo. And the way Christ talks to Don Camillo. I first found Don Camillo stories when I was quite young and am so happy to re-find him years later. I wish the books were more readily available because I think there's a whole new generation who need to be introduced to these to frenemies from Italy. They're wonderful stories!

Very well, I have not much to say, the book is indeed the cheapest mockery of soviet union I've ever read.

I loved picturing the twinkle in his eyes as he wrote about the sabotage.

A masterfully entertaining story of ideologies colliding like two deer with their menacing antlers. A good thing it is done in a key of comedy, and considering the heart has a soft place for compassion.

This book is funny, the father is so clever and can resolved anything! Confusion in a very funny way.

Camillo Tarocci was a partisan fighter during World War II. Now he's a priest in a small Italian town, constantly butting heads with Peppone, another partisan fighter turned Communist mayor. When Peppone wins ten million lira in a lottery (an unseemly amount for a member of the Party), Don Camillo helps him to keep it a secret. In return, the priest forces Peppone to take him with other Italian Party members on a tour of the USSR, where he hopes to win souls back to the church. As an added bonus ...more

Originally published on my blog here in July 2000.

The magazine in which the later Don Camillo stories were published folded as the Italian political situation changed and people lost interest in the old battle between the Church and the Communists. Comrade Don Camillo was published in its last few issues, and is unique in the series in that it was conceived as a unified narrative.

The plot is basically that mayor Peppone, now a Senator, is offered the chance to take a group of faithful members of

Credetemi.

An adorable look into how people use to see the battle against communism. A priest as a comrade in Russia, told in a tone of Candide. The book is one of several dozen issues in a paper called the Candido and is supposedly responsible for the loss of the Communist party. Funny throughout, though the humor is somewhat dated.

I read this when I was in high school as it was a selection from the Book-of-the-Month Club . It was an entertaining and humorous account of a visit to the then Soviet Union by a group of Italians. Don Camillo surreptitiously gains access to the group and proceeds, disguised as a loyal Communist party member. As you might expect, the expedition provides one comic moment after the other.

Genuinely funny. Though it's not incredibly deep, I love being able sit down, read, and just laugh! I love the characters too, especially Don Camillo.

This one in the series chronicles a visit by some Italians to Soviet Russia, and Don Camillo gets included on the trip. He manages to be far more useful than anyone thought would be the case.

He was a journalist, writer, humorist. Along with Giovanni Mosca and Giaci Mondaini he founded the humorous magazine "Candido". He was well know because of the "Don Camillo" series based on the stories about the two main characters: Don Camillo, the priest and Peppone, the communist Mayor.
