David Greig`s The Speculator questions the role of art, the official document by which the wealthy and the powerful control the masses. it is the story of the gambler who uses art, religion and desire to speculate the image of a better future and suspend the crowd`s disbelief for the perpetuation of money-making. I was reading this with a view to someone auditioning for it, so the staging was at the front of my mind. I think it's an interesting idea and a lively play - but I'm not sure that it ultimately had a point to make or anything really new to say.

David Greig was born in Edinburgh in 1969 and brought up in Nigeria. He studied drama at Bristol University and is now a well-known writer and director of plays. He has been commissioned by the Royal Court, the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company and is currently Dramaturg of the National Theater of Scotland.
