She's beautiful Princess, an angry witch, a jungle dweller, a clown with a big red nose, a butterfly and a little girl called Matilda. This book features illustrations from Eva Montanari.
I love the illustrations and they match the wildness and chaos of the story. I find the story to be a little unfocused, and I get it. It's suppose to be. My other issue with the book is the tone of it. I don't like books where a child narrater has a negative tone, or seems like a brat.
The illustrations for this book are beautiful, charming and why I gave the story the two stars you see. However, the story itself, is like the thousands of others like it. It's a book about behaviors and imagination and a little girl who has both. I found the story a bit choppy and didn't flow and I wanted it to.
When I read a children's book, because they are completely different from YA and adult fiction, I examine the book for ilustration quality, cover intrigue and artwork, the story theme, premise and plot. More importantly, I examine the flow of the story as it would be read by an adult to a child.
I found this book at a thrift store. I thought the cover was interesting and sweet, the font was lovely, and I figured I’d love a princess named Matilda. (That’s my great, great grandmother’s name.)
Oh, my word! The illustrations are not lovely. They are kind of scary and freaky. Another reviewer threw out the question of this girl having narcissist personality disorder. Ya think? Seriously, now. This girl is nothing short of a self-centered, untrained, spoiled brat. Yes, we have all known children like this and parents with children like this. Wow! Can you see what a girl like this becomes? Yikes. I do not enjoy this book at all. But, I will keep this book. Why? Because it is a very good example of how some people parent, which has contributed to society being what it is now and also a very good example of the kinds of things that are apparently being published. Terrible. Go to the library and see what I mean. You decide whether you want a child like this, whether you have a child like this, and what kind of adult this kind of child will become and how they will treat their parents when they are elderly. The majority of cases of abuse of senior adults, whether financial, emotional, physical or verbal, is at the hands of their spoiled adult children. Terrible.
Love it! The illustrations are LOVE! I love this kind of graphics, even when I was a child. I know for some kids it could be creepy, but I was in love with Caroline so 😄! Drawings like this is absolutely fascinating for me!
The title of the book is somewhat misleading, as I thought it would be about "Princess Matilda", but it turned out it's about a girl with a wild imagination and being a princess is one of her favourite character! I think it's such a creative story to let kids' imagination to run wild & free, especially at a young age.
This book is complicated to review because many of the things I like about it are also the things I don't like about it. I like that Matilda is not the typical sweet demure princess- she's a real girl with real emotions// At the same time she's a little bit horrible and angry (narcissistic personality disorder?) I love that she is Multi-dimensional, a princess is just one of her many sides that she enjoys exploring. It's a great book about pretend play and imagination, the illustrations are lovely. It's slightly dark though. But that's also kind of fantastic in a little girl's book.
There is a lot to like about this book. Matilda has a wonderful imagination and loves books. There is also a lot to not like about this book.
Not only am I fine when the protagonist is not perfect, I usually prefer it. However, the underlying tone of the text slips from emotional to bratty, Bratty I do not like. The tone could be an error in the translation, but it does affect the entire book.
The story itself is a bit weak; it does rely heavily on the illustrations, which might have worked better if I liked the illustrations more.
