Man, I wanted to like this more than I did. First of all, I didn't really warm up to Lance. He was a poorly-fleshed out character. I know that with 192 pages there is not a lot to work with. But I have read some books of this length that had as much as I needed and more to like a character like Lance, commitment-phobic because of the abuse he suffered from his father and from his mother leaving.

He was arrogant, which is not necessarily bad, but there wasn't much to make up for it. He actually told Kate that he didn't notice her before her sexy makeover and he wasn't going to apologize for it, because that was his way to be upfront. I'm not trying to say he should have lied, but I think there was a better answer than that.

Secondly he was running around with Kate behind his fiance's back. He knew it was wrong, and he said he would break off the engagement but didn't get around to it. I don't think anyone can make a person feel ashamed unless she/he lets him, but his behavior certainly did not help Kate feel okay about their relationship. Kate wasn't an affair-kind of person, and he should have been more sensitive to her needs.

Then he goes and tells her she's trying to control him because she's not happy with their affair and loving him when he can't love her. Can you say insensitive? Frankly, this book ended with me thinking that Kate was way too good for him.

I think that he probably did love her, but I think his assurances to her to feel good about herself were too tied into her newly-improved sexy looks. She was a good person before, and he barely seemed to realize that.

I know that I am old-fashioned. That's just the way I'm wired. I didn't feel right about their sexual relationship because I don't think it was what Kate needed out of it, and being one-sided (except for being able to have sex with the man she loved) made it feel wrong to me, in a way that not all modern romances do with sexual relationships out of marriage do. For me, it's all in the execution.

Now when it came to Kate, I didn't really have anything against her, except she should have stood up for herself sooner and in a more steadfast manner. She should have made sure that Lance honored her by breaking his engagement before they slept together (if that was truly important to her). She let him make her feel bad about herself and doubt her morals. That was a bad decision on her part.

I do believe it is refreshing to have realistic characters who don't always do the right thing, and who go into sexual relationships too soon, but it was frustrating to me to see how the dynamics of this relationship played out. Sex isn't everything. Yes, it's important, but Kate made the mistake of thinking that Lance wanting her physically was enough for a while. I like that initially she decided to quit and move on with her life when she found out Lance was engaged, but I wish she had stuck to it until she got the commitment she wanted from him, or just moved on. I don't think that is emotional blackmail, although Lance tried to treat her like she was playing that game. A person has the right to be very firm about what they want from a relationship, because she/he has to live with the regrets if she/he doesn't.

Ugh. I just felt like this book hit me wrong on all cylinders. Some of the writing wasn't as well-done as I would hope. There wasn't much description of the characters other than Kate. I don't think I even remember what Lance looks like. The first love scene was just very poorly written. It was almost distasteful in its execution, and really wham-bam, thank you ma'amish. I would expect more out of a millionaire Texas playboy (not that I have experience with any). The other love scenes were much better. There are elements I would normally have liked in this book: plain janish heroine who was overweight, being in love with her boss, hero who is self-made and is a Texan cowboy type. But the execution was just all wrong. I hope the next books in the Texas Cattleman's Club are better.

Lance Brody just got engaged, of course it is a business arrangement and he barely knows his fiancee but he has more pressing matters to attend to at work.

Secretary Kate Thornton is floored by the news Lance just rambled at her that he is engaged. Hurt and furious Kate decides the only thing to do is quit, there is no way she can watch the man she has quietly loved with a wife in what should have been her place. Deciding the time has come for her to stop hiding behind her baggy clothes, she undergoes a makeover hoping her new look will at least push her into finding out who she really is. But the one thing Kate does not count on is that Lance knows who she is, and had noticed before but now that he is thinking of marriage he realizes he may have chosen the wrong bride.

Had some great moments, the only thing I found hard to wrap my head around was that Kate undergoes her makeover and seems to struggle with the new her and questions it a lot.

Makeover + weight loss = instant love does not work in this book. Thought I was going to like Kate until she caves with one kiss from the jerk who ignored her until she underwent a makeover.

Kate has been in love with her boss Lance for years. She is a very insecure person even though she lost 80 lbs in the last year. She still wears her same big clothes and her glasses no longer fit her face. When Lance gets engaged to the pretty Lexi (a senator's daughter),Kate gives her two weeks' notice. She comes in to work the next day after having a make-over, and Lance takes one look at her and is now interested and kisses her.
**SPOILER ALERT!!** Although Lance is determined to marry his fiancee because of the "political" advantages it would mean for his oil business, he pursues Kate. Lexi leaves Washington DC to visit Lance in Texas to celebrate his annual July 4th Company Big Bash and to meet his employees. Lance ignores Lexi to spend time with Kate in secret and he doesn't even bother offering Lexi the engagement cake he requested Kate to order for his fiancee. Lexi is overcome with heat stroke and paramedics come to the rescue and recommend she rest and drink cool liquids. Just to show you what a selfish man Lance is, instead of taking Lexi upstairs to his room (the party is held at his mansion), he sends Lexi to her hotel in a cab and doesn't even accompany her. He instead rushes Kate up to his bedroom and has sex with her.
Throughout the next two or three weeks, Kate and Lance have sex on almost a daily/nightly basis. They even have sex at the office. Kate gets upset because Lance has not broken off his engagement after all this time (and she is still working for him inspite of giving her notice, so Wishy-Washy!) Kate threatens to end their affair, she tells him she loves him, but Lance says he cannot reciprocate. Since Lance doesn't want to lose Kate, he calls Lexi (who has returned to DC) and breaks off their engagement over the phone! The nerve of him! Lexi is shocked when Lance says "I just can't marry you when I'm involved with someone else". Lexi replies, "Who is it?" "Kate Thornton."he says. "Your secretary! Lance, please, men of your station don't marry secretaries." He responds,"I don't care, I can't get her out of my mind". Can you believe that? He admits that Kate is lower than he is, just because he is part of the 'Rich Man Texas Cattle Club'. I bet if Kate heard that, she would definitely not have anything to do with him. As far as I am concerned, Kate, who in my opinion is a sneaky, trampy, and wishy washy person, deserves the cheating, selfish, inconsiderate Lance. Lance decides to marry Kate that night in Vegas. In my opinion if this story happened in real life, the marriage would probably last less than 6 months. I would not even consider marrying a cheater and a dishonorable man.
I normally like Katherine Garbera's books, but this was disappointing. In spite of this, I look forward to more books by this author.

I've been reading Harlequin Blaze titles for a few years (as well as other category romances: Silhouette Nocturne, Harlequin Nascar), so I decided to branch out to Silhouette Desire. Taming the Texas Tycoon is the first in a multi-author series -- list books as a "series," and I'll usually try them out -- though after finishing this novel, I wasn't certain whether I'd read the second book or not.

This experience was new for me two-fold: I've never read a Silhouette Desire (and had no preconceived notions as to what this line entails), nor had I ever read a book by Ms. Garbera (so I was completely unfamiliar with her writing style). Taming the Texas Tycoon was over too quickly, with only a tiny thread of a conflict -- and no Texas tycoons were tamed.

I originally picked up the book because of the series title: Texas Cattlemen's Club. Oh, I thought, this features heroes who are friends and members of this ranching-type club. Like a country club with chaps. Again, based on this first installment, that's not the case. The club was mentioned as a kind of throwaway reference, with no explanation what the club is or does (despite Lance's proposal to Kate taking place in the club's dining room), or who its members might be. I'm hoping we'll learn more as the series progresses.

Though I don't want to say I hated this book, it clearly wasn't as enjoyable as I'd hoped it would be. I would like to finish the Texas Cattlemen's Club series, as well as read another series by Ms. Garbera.

This book is the first in the Texas Cattleman's Club: Maverick County Millionaires.
It is the story of Kate Thornton and Lance Brody.
Kate is a secretary & assistant to Lance at Brody Oil and Gas Company.
Lance is a Texas Cattleman's Club member. He is co-owner of the company with his brother Mitch. With Lance Brody, marriage is about gaining the right connections. So when the brothers decide that one of them must marry the senator's daughter for a business connection, Lance becomes engaged to a woman he barely knows.
For several years, Kate has pined for her friend and boss, Lance. When he becomes engaged, Kate decides she has had enough, and puts in her two weeks' notice. She meets up with her girlfriend and has a makeover done that is 2 years past due.
When Lance comes into the office, he doesn't recognize the beauty who is his assistant. His eyes are finally opened to her natural beauty, he was already attracted to her inner beauty. He does not want Kate to walk away from her job or him. He has to figure out how to get out of his "business arrangement engagement" and figure out how to win Kate back.
This was a story that seemed too short to actually make you root for the couple. Their coming together happened way too fast in the story, and only after her make-over. But i guess when a woman gains her confidence, anything can happen!

The Texas Cattleman's Club strikes again. More danger and intrigue.

There is something going on between Lance and Kate but they have....or I should say he has always left it in the friend zone. To her this is love and she is justing waiting for him to notice her.

But all her waiting comes too late as he gets in engaged to another woman! She decides enough is enough and quits! Shocking him into realizing he will miss her too much at work. She confesses love and he wants her.....but he is still engaged and she feels like a mistress.....and leaves him.

I do like how she finally stands up for herself but is overwhelmed by her feelings for him and can't resist him. I like how he really has to look into himself and realize there is more to life than business.

Good characters, well written, and more Texas Cattlemen to come.

So, I didn't read any of the other reviews and am probably outlining what's been said before...

The plot was OK, the characters can be great. Literally all of them have the potential to be great. Even though we have no idea what they look like. I normally love being immersed in characters and plots. I smell the smells and visualise the scenery or the clothes. Descriptions... Some have me laughing sometimes tearing up. But besides her stretch marks which is what was actually described, we dilunno what that bracelet looked like exactly or what the cocktail dress she wore looked like, did she wear the same when she married?

Aaarrrgh... So frustrating.

Here's my take, maybe this is Ms Garberas first book or one of the firsts. I mean maybe she was getting into the groove of things and her other novels are far better. Honestly though, I'm afraid to try another...

Didn't like it, I'm not that into stories in which heroine is in love with boss and watches him be with woman after woman for 5 years. Heroine only changes when hero gets engaged but was ok with him sleeping with woman after woman (he could have got anyone of them pregnant). I absolutely loathed the hero constantly calling heroine Katie-girl. I hated the plot and that hero was engaged to another woman for majority of book. Np.

This was alright, hero a little sleezy cheating on his fiance. And does his brother love his fiance? They seem to be fighting feelings. Glad heroine pushed the hero away when he wasn’t choosing her. I say read it.

Awful

It is BEYOND ME how this book has 4 stars. There is zero character development, zero tension or build up before the two main characters get together, and zero chemistry between the main characters. The story is all over the place and extremely redundant. I am all for an easy read, but you’d have to like terribly written books in order to like this one. SKIP IT.

This was a pretty horrible book. I can see where the writer was going with this- introducing all of these characters to the mix. I think there were 2-3 males and 2 females that she's setting up stories for- maybe, maybe not. But let's just say that when you start getting more distracted by the brother or the investigator dude.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE office romance and the unrequited love the leading females have for their oblivious leading males, but this was very much anti-climatic. The male is engaged to marry this Lexi girl (see, this is bad when I can remember an important character's name when I can't for the life of me remember the main couple in the book and am not even motivated enough to reread the synopsis to get their names), to get get a nice merger/support from her politician father on their business proposal, etc.

Secretary female lead decides to quit after hearing the engagement news from the male interest on the phone. Some crisis happened which was unimportant to the storyline, she gets a 1 day makeover and bam~! he realized how hot she was right when he saw her and then he couldn't resist but kiss her??? please. Then there was a lame July 4th party, Lexi appears in person, poorly described and a bit contrived. She leaves after what seems like 5 minutes and lead male and female got it on in 2 sentences. He said nothing changed, she's heartbroken. He leaves. She disappears, he hires his detective friend to find her, she's found.

I skipped a few chapters after that and the ending was as stupid as the rest.

-

The problem with this book was that the lead male and female has no chemistry whatsoever. We don't care that he's a tycoon, we don't care that she's a secretary in love with her boss (he doesn't even ACT like her boss), we don't care that they had sex and it was lukewarm, we don't care about the ending and how perfect he thought it was... because he doesn't really care.

Here's an excerpt that perfectly shows how lame this story was:

-
"Do you know what her dreams are?" Mitch asked
He didn't. But he did know that Kate appreciated romantic gestures. The idea came to him then. He'd ask her to marry him in the formal dining room of the Texas Cattleman's Club. He would fill the space with candles and flowers and make it as romantic as he could.

Really??? Wow, great way to include the series' name *Texas Cattleman's Club* into this, Ms. Garbera. Not even close and definitely no cigar. 1/2 a star so I'm being super generous with my rating.

I hope the future books in this series are better. This series does not seem to connected well with all the other series in the Cattleman's books . More self centered Millionaire instead . Where is the code of the Royal Cattleman's club ?

I won this book in a FaceBook giveaway by another author and thank goodness I didn't pay for it. There is no plot just a scenario. Plain-Jane secretary toils for 5 years for a boss she is in love with. She still wears her "fat clothes," oversize glasses, and nothing hairstyle. Boss is, of course, a hottie and never sees what's in front of him.
Boss announces engagement (it's political - Senator's daughter - and done for consideration of upcoming legislation). Secretary gives notice, goes to girlfriend and is made over.
Next day - boss is mesmerized by new look; brushes past her and she totters on her ONE-INCH heels; he steadies her; he kisses her; he realizes she's the one he wants.
Boss calls secretary Katie-girl. Sheesh.
When was this written you might ask? Was it done in the 1970s or 80s? No, it was from 2009. This got one star simply because they used a condom. That's the only part of this book that was up-to-date.

This book was such crap that I couldn't finish it. I liked the premise, but even for this publisher it was just too much. I can understand where Kate's coming from, feeling an ugly duckling, yet still being to scared to do anything about it. I can ever understand Lance not being all that attracted to her pre-make over. But Lance has no emotional depth. If this were a full novel and Ms. Garbera had time to develop the characters, it could have been just the book for me. But it wasn't, so she couldn't, meaning this book had very little chance. I think I'm going to have to be more careful about which Silhouette books I read, because the length of the book always seems to detract from the story for me.

I wish I could give this book zero stars. We never find out who started the fire. The love story was so predicatble and the characrers were so unlikeable that it was amazing. I will read my nora roberts, susan mallery and debbie macomber before this author. She was so moralistic, Kate but yet she felt like she had no principles and I have to agree with her. wanted to like this book. but did not. It would have been nice if she had a backstory about lexi and Mitch in there as well. The characters and Lance was such an arrogant jerk, it was amazing. I was glad I did not spend money buying this book.

I liked this story on a superficial level. If I start examining the motives or actions of the main characters I have major issues.

As a fluff story - something quick to pass the time - it was good, but there were a lot of flaws. My main gripe is the heroine's complete lack of identity away from the hero. Also, the fact that the hero was engaged to someone else for the entire length of the novel really turned me off, even though the circumstances were explained well enough.

Lance gets engaged for business reasons but starts seeing Kate in a new light before her makeover. Kate is in love with Lance but his engagement sparks her to resign from her job and try a new look to get her heart back and try to move on from Lance. This is a compact story with a close bond, turned lovers to more
