A fund-and consciousness-raising publication from Reporters Without Borders with a generous portfolio of work by Willy Ronis and a gallery of "The Predators of Press Freedom." 103 pages; b&w plates throughout; 8.5 x 11.75 inches.
Another opportunity to see and own the photographic art of Willy Ronis in a volume which fits so well with the man - he waived copyright for this 2001 album collection to raise funds for Reporters without Borders who work to protect the human rights of journalists.
The black and white work, here from the 30s to the 80s, of ordinary people going about ordinary business (including being dead in a rail accident, and being on strike) is beautiful and always at least a little poignant. This contrasts with the bookended thumbnails of those who seek to extinguish the freedom of the press in the most oppressive ways. Too many names familiar, too many still in positions of power behaving at least as badly almost 20 years later.
