This story about second chances was cute but more then a little unrealistic which had me struggle with the story. I seriously doubt that a successful journalist/editor would give up his career and the possibility to own a newspaper for a woman. That said, I like the dreamy second chances idea. Would I fall in love with my first love after a 15 year gap ... hmmm, maybe? I guess this is why we call this genre 'romance novels' instead of 'realism'.

4 Stars! ~ At 18, Valetta had run from her privileged life and controlling sister in California to her aunt in upstate New York. The quiet way of life appealed to her and she made her aunt's cabin her own, staying on, marrying and having a daughter. When tragedy struck stealing her husband, the whole town embraced her and her baby. And over the next ten years, every time Valetta spoke with her sister, Alexis, they quarreled bitterly. Alexis couldn't understand why she refused to come home and claim her inheritance. Lincoln had begun his career with the LA Confidential, Alexis and Valetta's paper, and 20 years in, he's now the Editor in Chief. When Alexis gives him the assignment that will ensure his true partnership in the paper, Lincoln has no choice to comply. Only Lincoln's assignment is to bring Valetta and her daughter home to California, where the family legacy awaits them. Linc's unprepared for the overwhelming welcome Valetta's small town embraces him with. Seems they've all be waiting for him to come. Their darling Valetta needs a good man, and her daughter is hungry for a father's influence. And the towns people find ways to invite him into their lives and make him a part of their community. When days turn into weeks, Lincoln begins to dream of making his life in the east coast mountains with a woman he's missed terribly and her daughter. Valetta sees the change in Linc since he arrived. He's relaxed and smiling all the time. Her once upon a time teenage crush is quickly rekindled into a deep love for the man who once was her knight. But will he give up everything he has worked for?
The prologue was like a sucker punch to the gut, so powerfully emotional. I was relieved that once punched the pain didn't linger and wasn't the driving force of the story. I like how Ms. Gale makes her heroes the leads, it gives her stories a refreshing voice. When Valetta left California, Lincoln's life changed and his drive for success controlled his life. Having her back in his life awakes needs in him he found hard to recognize. The town's people are wonderfully developed and I was pleasantly surprised to find I'd met them before in Ms. Gale's Down from the Mountain. This is a heart warming love story that was a pleasure to read
