His journey took him from the LA bus station to the Mexican cantinas of San Antonio, the Indian reservations of New Mexico to the last surviving juk ...more

well written and interesting but also frustrating in author's single-mindedness in pursuit of american music that he considered "good" while disparaging ALL OTHER artists and genres of pop and rock. Garth Cartwright has created the perfect hybrid; not quite a music book, not quite a travel book - and it's not trying to be either - it's trying (and succeeding) to exist in the middle of those two genres; as it's own thing. But it is one of the best books to feature music that I've read in years. A wonderful road-trip of a book AND a wonderful playlist of a book. Loved it. Garth's a great writer. ...more

Fantastic book full of illuminating observations about some remarkable musicians and the forgotten America that produced them. I have much to think about, but for now I'll say this: maybe it takes an outsider to help us Americans appreciate the amazing variety of music we had all around us and also to show us how little of it is left. Much more to say later..... ...more

You get some good road stories and musical history but the guy is a little pompous and whines quite a bit.
