Sundown Slim/Henry Herbert Knibbs. It might have been, "Sundown Slim and Chance the Wonder Dog." It might have been, "Sundown Slim, Chance the Wonder Dog, and the Beautiful Linda Rosa." Arizona became a state in 1912. Henry Knibbs published his book of ranch life in Arizona in 1915. A cowboy story, "Sundown Slim," is the matrix for a host of cowboy books and cowboy movies which followed. "Sundown" has an authentic tang of America's Old West; the author knew that West and his first readers, who also knew that West, were there to challenge him if his account of ranch life erred. "Sundown Slim" has a host of classic cowboy themes, including the cattle men v/ sheep men. Knibbs aspired to be a cowboy poet. His prose is better than his poetry. In, "Sundown," he created one of the relatively rare gentle, lovable men in American literature.
