It's same-sex marriage in Jane Austen's Regency England In this stunning, gender-bending, stylish dance-of-manners version of Jane Austen's beloved classic novel "Emma" -- an alternate Regency where gay marriage is commonplace and love is gender-blind -- matchmaking Emma Woodhouse tries to find a suitable spouse for her lover Harriet Smith, and is embroiled in the secrets ...more

(This duplicates my review on LJ.)

Genderbending and gender flips are popular these days, whether it's putting Disney princesses in their princes' outfits or designing gender-flipped casts for movies. One interesting example I came across recently is James Fairfax, a retelling of Jane Austen's Emma, by Adam Campan.

In this retelling quiet, reserved secondary-character-with-a-secret Jane Fairfax becomes James Fairfax. That's change no. 1. But the story also posits that progressive Enlightenment tho

A retelling of Jane Austen's "Emma" in a setting where gay marriage is permitted, though still not on a par with heterosexual marriage. I suspect the author is gay (Adam Campan, not Jane Austen) from the way he centers all the male characters. Mr Elton is increased in importance, as is Frank Churchill and of course James Fairfax of the title. But Emma herself and certainly Harriet Smith, Miss Taylor and Mrs Elton seem oddly diminished.

The central triangle of misunderstandings between Emma, Frank

When I started reading this book, I said that I wasn't sure which sort of Jane Austen remix I prefer: the kind where it's mostly Jane, with alterations and a little bit of new material, or the sort where the new author takes Austen's characters or setting and does their own thing. Now that I have finished James Fairfax,, I have decided that I definitely prefer the latter.

Emma is my second-favorite Austen novel, and this book is 95% Emma, with some pronouns changed and a couple of interpretive pa

Interesting concept but too little grasp of history to make it even mildly plausible. I had less trouble accepting zombies than I had wrapping my mind around the blithe acceptance of same-sex marriage in Regency England. A fantastic subject for a long conversation on a cold winter night, but doesn't translate well to a 500 page retelling of Emma. Minor annoyance - there were several times when the author missed changing a pronoun from the original gender - which for me only reinforced how diffic ...more
