This book, like the Medieval Forest, offers a clear and calm description of Medieval Castles, their relationship to the power of the King/Queen and their barons, how to defend them, how to besiege them, the purpose of each part of the castle, and how those parts changed over time. It was written for a British school audience, so I found the times where the narrator assumed certain knowledge by saying things like "...castles guarding the Scottish and Welsh borders. You will easily think of reasons for these" somewhat charming, but the suggested exercises in the book are more explicitly British "Make a map of your own county marking all the castles you can discover."
