Delightful book published in 1913 about a young American woman who goes to Japan to teach at a missionary school.

This is a wonderful book! I found it in the library of a cabin in the Scottish Highlands and was immediately captivated by the language, emotions, and sentiments, so I sat in the sun and read it straight through. The edition is from 1908, with a red binding, and contains no mention of the author's name! I had to look it up to find out the author's name.

The story is told as a series of lettters to a close friend back home from a young American widow teaching in a missionary kindergarten in Japan

Strange little story. Parts are sweet, parts very interesting, parts very lame. Hence three stars.

The heroine is a teacher and decides to go overseas to be a missionary. This is the tale of how she gets there. I read it awhile back, but I do recall enjoying the ending in particular. It's the middle that limped a bit for me.

Not her best work. I suggest you try her short story, Little Sister Snow. I loved that one.
