An “enticing . . . elegant and stylish” biography of the ancient Hindu manuscript that became the world’s most famous sex manual (The New York Review of Books)

The Kamasutra is one of the world’s best-known yet least understood texts, its title instantly familiar but its contents widely misconstrued as a how-to guide of acrobatic sexual techniques. Yet the book began its li

While the title sounds like this is a pretty racy book, it isn't. This is a history of the Kamasutra from when it was first written in India back in the Third Century AD. bookcrossing 2009:

Horay! After almost a year of reading, I have finished this book! That actually makes it sound really bad. This book has 7 chapters, 5 of which I read last week. I think I got a bit overwhelmed because I know so little about Indian history, language, mythology and culture, so I was a bit overwhelmed by the first two chapters (which are about the origins and the book

I found it very difficult to finish this book. It started well but I struggled through the last chapters to the point where I skimmed just to be done with it. It's really the story of how the Kama Sutra was rediscovered in the 19th century and the struggle to get it translated and published.

The first chapter or two are about the Kama Sutra itself, dispelling the myths surrounding it. Rather than being the lavishly illustrated manual of sex positions we know it as, the original KS was more of a

Whatever would the world be like today if it were not for a certain Mr. Burton and Mr. Arbuthnot--the two Englishman who fought against all the "rampant prudery" of the Victorian age and translated and published the most erotic book of all time? I can't say I completely admire the personalities of these two men, but they were beyond their time in their belief that other cultures have something to offer the world. And how amazing that in this so-called primitive and non-western culture women's pl ...more
