Hendrik Magdalenus Bruna was een Nederlandse grafisch vormgever, tekenaar en schrijver van kinderboeken. Hij werd wereldberoemd met zijn kinderboekjes over nijntje.
Not quite to the same high standards as the Miffy books but there is something appealing about this style of illustration and simple text. The pictures are in what I now think of as 'Miffy colours' blue, yellow, green and what Dick Bruna calls red but the rest of the world thinks of as orange. Poppy Pig doesn't have a very eventful day, she sweeps the floor, does some dusting, eats some carrots, washes her duster and then has a nice sit down. We've all had days like that. This was enjoyed by all the small people I have read this with.
Can't fault the drawings or the language - it is perfectly in step with the miffy-verse. However... This book makes it seem like all Poppy Pig ever does is clean her house like a 50s 'little woman'. I think Bruna could have given her more of a life. So I'm thankful that this was one I borrowed from a library and not spent money on, because Poppy Pig's life was not one I wanted to keep as an example for my daughter. I can't believe this book was published 2004 and not 1954!
