Unfortunately I did not get many of the jokes since I had never watched SpongeBob Squarepants and didn't have the cultural background necessary. It was a good experience to read this and realize somewhat how kids must feel when they are thrown into language completely out of their element. It was a struggle and I only read the whole book by scanning, but I did enjoy the jokes and especially the riddles. I'm sure this book is a hit with 2nd graders. I'm not sure the Kinder and First graders who inevitably check it out or buy it, will get so many of the idiom based jokes. However I know Spongebob is a hit because it uses so much of what Children's Television Workshop learned about appealing to kids by appealing to their older siblings and parents. What a feat of marketing this book is. Down to the CD ads on the back cover. I have a hard time being a fan of Nickelodeon, but I probably should try to spend some time there.
