CIA officer Shawn Reilly recruits foreign officials to spy for the United States. He thinks of his job as selling dreams to people who need money, need their egos stroked or want revenge on their bosses or government. After spending many years in the hellholes of the world, he has wound up in the twilight of his career in Lisbon, Portugal where he faces a "by the book" boss, a crumbling marriage and Boris, the chief of the Russian intelligence service in Portugal who is likewise targeting Shawn. At the same time, the Libyan intelligence service is trying to lure a Central Asian chemical weapons specialist to Libya and the Russian service is on the tail of the Kazak scientist. Boris' attractive daughter, visiting from Moscow, is swept up in the plots within plots, where as in the real world of espionage, all is not necessarily as it first appears. The various threads of intrigue come together in Lisbon. In addition to performing his professional duties Shawn is forced to face the question for an aging spy of just what really matters in life - one's duty or love. The Dream Merchant of Lisbon goes into the minds of the major players to explore the psychology of espionage, based on the author's true life experiences in that shadowy world.

Estava com saudades dum bom livro de espiões e não sai desiludida da leitura deste. Em parte fez-me recordar um dos melhores livros de espiões que alguma vez li - Jogo Duplo de Heinz G. Konsalik - sendo que Jogo Duplo se passa no período da Guerra Fria e O Mercador de Sonhos de Lisboa passa-se na actualidade e tem, como cenário, a nossa Lisboa.
E ter Lisboa como cenário dum livro é ter a certeza de como são os cenários e não temos de imaginar por onde andam os personagens. Algumas das cenas passam-se em embaixadas que sei onde ficam, outras em hotéis e restaurantes por onde já passei e, ainda mais curioso, é que os personagens principais vão à minha "praia" almoçar um dia porque, dizem eles (e eu confirmo) é onde se come o melhor peixe. Pontos totalmente a favor desta leitura.
Outro ponto a favor é o realismo conferido às situações. Mérito exclusivo de Gene Coyle, o autor, que passou vinte e nove anos como oficial na Direcção de Operações da CIA e mais de metade desse período infiltrado em países estrangeiros. A sua experiência leva a que consiga escrever livros de espionagem bastante credíveis, sem romancear em excesso uma profissão que se pensaria já extinta.
Este foi um livro de leitura bastante agradável e que entretêm bastante nestes dias mais frios. Mais uma vez uma experiência com um novo autor que correu bastante bem e que pretendo repetir. Um livro oferecido pela minha filha que merece, só por isso (como se eu precisasse de razões) um belo beijo na bochecha.

...Por norma não costumo ler este tipo de livros de espionagem porque por geralmente são demasiados lentos. Mas como este tinha Lisboa como pano de fundo fiquei cheio de curiosidade e a medida que fui esfolheando notei que a sua leitura era razoável, e em uma semana terminei o livro...

There are things I enjoyed in this book, and others I frankly did not like.
The things I enjoyed have to do with the fact that it is well written and plausible, the characters are well developed and the plot has a nice rhythm to it.
The things I did not like are insufferably personal: I found the main character (probably a lot like the Author, since both worked apparently in the same "line of work") unbearably arrogant; found it amusing that, unlike others books about Lisbon and the Portuguese, this one had always a bit of a negative tone about everything, and in general an "ungrateful" attitude towards it.

All in all, I had fun reading the book even when I did not like the main character and that is why I give four stars.

Gostei do livro, tem uma história bastante credível, mas achei que às vezes se alongava um pouco e perdia ritmo, com algumas imprecisões, mas nada que prejudique a leitura ou o livro (viagens rápidas em hora de ponta, uma viagem de comboio que não era possível ser feita aquela hora) e tem um fim que está romantizado, eu preferia que fosse mais realista (gosto pessoal).

Lê-se bem e torna-se bastante interessante quando se conhece a cidade e alguns dos sítios mencionados.

Mais um livro de espionagem só que desta vez “Pelos Caminhos de Portugal”

Gostei de ler o livro, mas houve um período em que parei porque tornou se demasiado extenso, demasiado exaustivo para continuar a sua leitura. Apesar disso, a história é interessante, saber o por de trás de um pensamento de um espião, já que este livro foi inspirado nas histórias reais de um ex-agente da CIA.

This was an entertaining book. I enjoyed it
