Within an Inch of His Life
Emile Gaboriau (1833-1873) is an important figure in the history of detective fiction. A French journalist and novelist, he created the "roman policier" with a series of books involving private detective Monsieur Lecoq, who works logically. Lecoq was based on a real-life thief turned policeman named Francois Vidocq (1775-1857), whose memoirs mixed fiction and fact. Gaboriau's huge following was eclipsed by Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. Interestingly, Holmes may have been at least partly based on another of Gaboriau's characters, consulting detective Father Tabaret, whose methods Monsieur Lecoq adopts in the first Lecoq book.

The book, which was Gaboriau's first detective novel, introduced an amateur detective. It also introduced a young police officer named Monsieur Lecoq, who was the hero in three of Gaboriau's later detective novels. The character of Lecoq was based on a real-life thief turned police officer, Eugène François Vidocq (1775–1857), whose own memoirs, Les Vrais Mémoires de Vidocq, mixed fiction and fact. It may also have been influenced by the villainous Monsieur Lecoq, one of the main protagonists of Féval's Les Habits Noirs book series.
The book was published in "Le Siècle" and at once made his reputation. Gaboriau gained a huge following, but when Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes, Monsieur Lecoq's international fame declined. The story was produced on the stage in 1872. A long series of novels dealing with the annals of the police court followed, and proved very popular. Gaboriau died in Paris of pulmonary apoplexy.
Gaboriau's books were generally well received. About the Mystery of the Orcival, Harper's wrote in 1872 "Of its class of romance - French sensational - this is a remarkable and unique specimen". A film version of Le Dossier n° 113 (File No. 113) was released in 1932.

În noaptea de 22 spre 23 iulie 1871, către ceasurile unu, mahalaua Parisului, cea mai mare şi cea mai des populată dintre mahalalele frumosului oraş, Sauveterre, fu trezită la viaţă de galopul frenetic al unui cal.
O mulţime de orăşeni se repeziră la ferestrele lor.
În întunericul nopţii ei nu putură să vadă decât un ţăran fără haină şi fără pălărie, biciuind fără milă o iapă albă pe care o călărea pe deşelate.
După ce străbătuse mahalaua, ţăranul o apucase la dreapta pe strada Naţională – fostă, pe vremuri, strada Imperială – o cotise pe strada Mautrec şi se oprise drept în faţa acelei frumoase case care face colţul cu strada Château.
Acolo locuieşte primarul oraşului Sauveterre, domnul Séneschal, fost avocat, membru al consiliului general.
După ce a descălecat, ţăranul a prins cu putere şnurul clopotului şi a început să tragă de el cu atâta nădejde, încât peste câteva clipe toată casa a fost în picioare. În clipa următoare un servitor zdravăn, cu ochii încă cârpiţi de somn, veni să-i deschidă şi-i spuse, din capul locului, iritat:
— Cine eşti, măi omule? Ce vrei? Ai băut un păhărel mai mult? Ştii al cui este clopotul pe care eşti gata să-l rupi?
— Vreau să vorbesc cu domnul primar, răspunse ţăranul, şi încă repede, treziţi-l din somn.
Domnul Séneschal era însă treaz de-a binelea.
Învăluit într-un halat de casă din molton gri, cu o lumânare în mână, neliniştit şi căutând fără rezultat să-şi ascundă neliniştea, el apăruse în vestibul şi auzise totul.
— Este aici primarul, se auzi glasul său iritat. Ce vrei de la el în ceasul acesta când toţi oamenii cinstiţi dorm?
Înlăturându-l pe servitor, ţăranul înaintă şi spuse fără să folosească nici cea mai simplă formulă de politeţe:
— Am venit, răspunse el, să vă cer să ne trimiteţi pompierii.
— Pompierii!…
— Da, repede, trebuie să vă grăbiţi!
Primarul clătina din cap.
— Hm!… exclamă el şi această exclamaţie dovedea că uimirea lui ajunsese la culme, hm! hm!
Şi cine nu ar fi fost uimit în locul lui?
Ca să-i strângi pe pompieri era neapărat necesar să baţi alarma generală; or, să baţi alarma generală în plină noapte însemna să pui oraşul cu susul în jos, însemna să-i faci pe bravii lui locuitori să ţâşnească speriaţi din paturile lor căci abia auziseră această lugubră alarmă, cu numai un an în urmă, odată cu invazia nemţilor şi, după aceea, odată cu proclamarea Comunei.
— E vorba de un foc serios? întrebă domnul Séneschal.

I loved this book!
So exciting! I loved the characters, the way they interacted. I loved how the story develops, how the legal people and detectives search for the truth. Especially, I liked that the book shows true love between a betrothed couple, and also love within families.
This book was written by a Frenchman who lived from 1832 to 1873. He admired the stories of Edgar Allan Poe. His novels are considered the first detective stories in France. Gaboriau's novels were written before the creation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes (1887).

Aún no doy crédito a lo que acabo de leer. Novela de 1873 con una trama de investigación y suspense magníficamente contada, con intriga a cada página. Lo más sorprendente es el peso de la investigación a lo largo de toda la obra en una novela de 1873, cuando en aquel momento primaba el drama y el romance por encima de la parte policial.
Gaboriau me ha dejado con la boca abierta 150 años después de haber escrito esta pedazo de joya.

By no means is this my favorite Gaboriau. When the nearby town turns out to put out a fire engulfing the estate of Valpinson, they find the owner, Count Claudieuse, gravely injured by the hands of a murderer. All evidence, including the testimony of a village simpleton, points to M de Boiscoran, a genial young landowner. Despite the pleas of his fiancée, he refuses to give an alibi, and may yet die. The book turns upon his fiancee's quest to discover the truth, and the revelation of just how little a 'hero of romance' Boiscoran really proves himself to be. Told ironically, it would be much more enjoyable. As it is, I find it much more interesting as a look at France in the 1870s than as a novel.
