Shelves: favorites
Nothing less than a particular and vivid history of thought, up to the last portion of the 19th century, this scholarly look at atheists, agnostics, great thinkers, philosophers, and poets hurdles through centuries with the ease and grace of a gazelle in tall grass. Saltus may be an obscure writer, but with this publication, I would not be surprised at a small renaissance of the man.

Starting with the Samkhya of Hinduism, Buddha, and Pyrrho, touching on Jesus, generally skipping medieval tomfoole

Edgar Evertson Saltus was an American writer known for his highly refined prose style. Saltus received a law degree from Columbia University in 1880.
Saltus wrote two books of philosophy, The Philosophy of Disenchantment and The Anatomy of Negation. Acclaimed by fellow writers in his day, Saltus fell into obscurity after his death.
