I wouldn’t call the nine stories in this collection strange (like Robert Aickman) or weird (like Lovecraft), although they sometimes have elements of both but infused with irony and humor. So how about ‘lugubrious’ stories? Bradfield’s world is very ‘American’ with a focus on products, magazines and food for a nostalgic wink and to place the reader in a recognisable setting. These environments quickly evolve into something else with a dread-like turn of events, receive a surreal tinge or dreamlike quality. Death is quite present in most of the stories. The protagonists are hard to find enjoyable and that’s definitely the writer’s choice to make you aware of yourself and the life of others. Recommend for the adventurous reader who is always eager to discover twisted narratives and a compelling imagination.
