Mackenzies Bundle: Mackenzie's Mountain / Mackenzie's Mission / Mackenzie's Pleasure / A Game of Chance

Rate this book
" The Mackenzie men are legendary. Strong, independent, passionate and single-minded, they take what they want no matter the rules! Catch up on these classic novels by beloved author Linda Howard, collected together for one low price! Bundle includes Mackenzie's Mountain, Mackenzie's Mission, Mackenzie's Pleasure, and A Game of Chance.

In Mackenzie's Mountain, Wolf Mackenzie is a loner with a way with horses and a deep distrust of outsiders -- until one woman dares to venture onto Mackenzie's Mountain. Schoolteacher Mary Elizabeth Potter is determined to keep Wolf's teenage son from abandoning his dreams -- and finds herself rescuing Wolf along the way.

In Mackenzie's Mission, Night Wing -- the revolutionary test plane with a top-secret weapons system -- was Colonel Joe Mackenzie's number-one priority. And weapons expert Caroline Evans was his number-one distraction. True, the stubborn blonde was giving him the cold shoulder, but Joe hadn't become the best of the best by giving up. Then he discovered someone on the inside was sabotaging Night Wing, and with her late hours and specialized expertise, Caroline seemed the obvious choice. Now Joe had to choose between allegiance to his country and love for his prime suspect....

In Mackenzie's Pleasure, no mission had ever gotten the better of navy SEAL Zane Mackenzie -- until now. Barrie Lovejoy needed a savior, before the terrorist group holding her hostage lost patience and silenced her -- forever. Rescuing Barrie would be the most important mission of his life. For he would sooner die than let the enemy harm the mother of his child.

In A Game of Chance, in an attempt to lure a vicious criminal out of hiding, agent Chance Mackenzie uses his quarry's estranged daughter, Sunny, as bait. It doesn't take long for him to win her trust -- and her heart -- but what Chance hadn't guessed was that Sunny had reasons of her own to be hiding from her father. Now his deception has brought them both one step closer to danger.

Love this series and read it often but really wish the other siblings had their stories told too.
The author does herself and this family a disservice by not writing all the siblings stories.
Really get aggravated reading MACKENZIE’S PLEASURE and A GAME OF CHANCE as we get told about the siblings lives but don’t get to read their stories.
Read in the eBook box set through my library as I lost my paperback versions of these books in a house move.
This box set is missing book 3.5 Mackenzie's Magic about Maris, the only daughter of Wolf and Mary.

1 - MACKENZIE’S MOUNTAIN
Read many times and still love it.
I don’t know how many times I have read this book over the years but it has been a lot of times and I always enjoy it.
Wolf is such an alpha hero and his trying to stay away from Mary for her reputation’s sake is sweet.
His relationship with his son Joe is wonderful but sad, they both suffered terribly due to insufficient police work. (In this we find out about Wolf and in Joe’s book MACKENZIE’S MISSION, we hear about the horrors he suffered.)
Yes, it is now a bit old fashioned but it was originally a Harlequin romance. This shows in how Mary talks and behaves, (that shaking teacher’s finger) but the racism against Wolf and Joe for being half breed Indians, is still very much alive.
The fact one persons unwarranted bigotry and hatred leads to all of what happens, is a lesson still needed to be learned today.
I love how this all plays out and how shocked the people of this small town are when the truth is found out.
This is my favourite in this series with Joe’s book an extremely close second.
Reread in the eBook box set through my library as I lost my paperback versions of these books in a house move.
2 - MACKENZIE’S MISSION
Quick romance timeframe wise. Everything happens within a few days but doesn’t diminish the story.
Joe is still very likeable enough in his own book but Wolf is the best of this bunch. Probably why I have read it loads of times compared to the rest only been read a few times.
Saying that, I still enjoyed this story and Caroline and Joe together.
Loved that Caroline is top of her field in a man’s world and is equal to Joe and able to hold her own.
My only disappointment is the instant forgiveness. Caroline does tear into Joe and gives him a great piece of her mind.
If Caroline had just held out that bit longer, and accepted nothing less than a grovelling apology, I would have loved her more.
Great ending with them both visiting the mountain and the baby.
I hated the instant forgiveness aspect but that is how the formula of books of this era were. Tough alpha male, virgin heroine not matter her age and forgiveness without explanation or apology.
Reread in the eBook box set through my library as I lost my paperback versions of these books in a house move.
3 - MACKENZIE’S PLEASURE
Enjoyable for the most part with a few eye roll moments for me.
Insta love between the H’s, separation due to Zane being shot and then taking down the bad guys kept me entertained.
Barrie the heroine, being intelligent but acting TSTL was a bit of a spoiler but at least she acted correct at the end and did as Zane had told her.
The epilogue was so funny.
I don’t always continue reading after book two as Zane and Chance are never quite as good. I do enjoy Maris’s short story though.
The author does herself and this family a disservice by not writing the siblings stories.
I find it sad that the author glosses over half the children at the start of this book, explaining their lives away in one short introduction and introduces us to Chance, a stray boy Wolf and Mary eventually adopt.
I would have rather read about their other children.
We are now left with Zane’s story, Maris’ short story and the new addition, a boy who names himself Chance Mackenzie when he is adopted by Mary and Joe at age 14.
Though I overall love this family and enjoy the times they are all together, these later story’s never grab me like Wolf’s and Joe’s did.
Read in the eBook box set through my library as I lost my paperback versions of these books in a house move.
4 - A GAME OF CHANCE
Boy oh boy. Though overall enjoyable, I just want to beat Chance with a heavy skillet at times.
I just don’t feel any emotion on Chance’s side, he is continually thinking how doing something will affect the mission.
Poor Sonia/Sunny. She had no control over who her father is but is exploited due to genetics.
She is extremely intelligent, capable and street smart. She has sacrificed so much to keep her younger sister safe, with no thanks from the sister either. Margreta never puts in an appearance, even at their wedding.
Sunny put things together very quickly at the end but was shot and too weak to tell Chance to take a hike.
She did put up a good fight for a while but forgives him without a real apology, once he tells her about his childhood.
A bad childhood does not excuse using someone to further your own cause.
IF Chance had really grovelled, I would have forgiven his actions but we don’t even really get a decent sorry, more of a “but I needed to do it.”
Though I own this book I reread it in the eBook box set through my library. I lost my paperback versions of these books in a house move.

A thoroughly enjoyable read -- all four stories. I loved them all. I have to wonder why, though, they didn't include MacKenzie's Magic in this bundle. It is sequentially the fourth book in the MacKenzie stories, and the storyline precedes A Game of Chance, the last story. These books will be definite keepers for me!

Haven't read Mackenzie's Bundle but have read the rest - need this one. The Mackenzie's are a great series (Mackenzie's Mountain, Mackenzie's Mission, A Game of Chance, and the one about the only daughter Maria (?sp)) This is an author that I have read a lot of and have added her books to my 'keeper' book shelf. Most I have read at least twice and some even more than that.

Loved this series by Linda Howard. Great characters and good storyline. I just wish she had continued and wrote stories for the 2 middle sons in the family.

loved the whole series! One of my favorite re-reads; each is a feel-good story; people who have values and pass them on to their children.

Fantastic... Read it over and over. At least once a year... you can't get better than that. It's like going to visit family you adore.
