.كتاب مُمتاز من ناحية كُل شيء السرد، المعلومات، تقسيم الكتاب، موسوعة شاملة للكائن الحي"البوم"، شيء مُذهل،سأل الكاتب سؤال متي كانت أخر مرة رأيت "بومة"..؟ طبعا قعدت نتفكر واكتشفت أنه شفت البومة مرة واحدة بس في حياتي ، كان لونها أبيض في بئر مية مهجور .

تماماً هذا الكتاب سيطير بسرعة إلى مُفضلتي دون أي نِقاش !!
أنا شخصٌ مهووس في معرفة أصل الأشياء، ولماذا سُمي كذا ولماذا عومل بطريقة معينة في بقعة من بقاع الأرض بينما عومل بطريقة مُختلفة في بلد آخر ..

وهذا الكتاب أشفى تساؤلاتي عن البوم وزياده !

أجمل ما في الأمر أن تقرأ كتاب عن موضوع تحبه بالأساس فإلى جانب كونك مولع بالقراءة سوف تكون حماستك أكبر لقراءة كتاب عن شيء مفضل لديك.
البومة لديزموند موريس الكتاب الذي أدخلني لعالم هذا الكائن الجميل المفضل لدي هذا العالم الساحر المليء بالأساطير والقصص المثيرة وكذلك "بالخرافات"! فنظرة العالم للبومة لم تتغير منذ الأزل هي هي ذات النظرة، فكان هناك عبر التاريخ الحضارات المحبة للبومة بل والمقدسة لهذا الطائر الفريد مثل أثينا اليونان وهناك ثقافات أُخرى ترى فيها كائن الشر والموت. إلى يومنا هذا ونحن في القرن ال 21 ما زال هذان الإعتقادان شائعان سواء بالنظرة الإيجابية أو السلبية للبومة. أما بانسبة لي فالبومة هو البومة طائر جميل مُلفت ملكي أيضًا أراه إلى حد ما يشبه القطة يمتلك كلاهما شبه كبير بشكل العين وحدة البصر بل وبالتصرفات وكذلك شكل الرأس خاصة البومة القرناء العظيمة كائناي المفضلان أبدًا إذن هذه الصفات المشتركة هي السّر في حبي لهذا النمط من الكائنات.
كذلك وكما ذكر الكاتب بأن سبب حبنا للبومة هو قرب شكلها من شكل الإنسان خاصة شكل رأسه المستدير_ألا يجعلنا هذا نفكر بنظرية داروين بشكل جدي أكثر_ تخيل أن يكون أصلك بومة مثلا 😄 شخصيّا أحس بتقارب رهيب إلا أنه كونها تعد من الطيور بالنهاية يجعلنا نعيد التفكير لكن أجزم أن هناك سر ما 😎_إذن فشبه رأسه برأس الإنسان جعله رمزًا للحكمة.
بالعودة للكتاب الذي يجب أن أوفيه حقه هو كتاب رائع بالفعل يتطرق إلى عدة مواضيع مثيرة ابتداءََ بتقديم تاريخ البومة الثقافي عبر العصور وأساطير الشعوب المتعلقة بها، مرورا بدخول البومة في الأعمال الفنية والأدبية في عالم النحاتين والرسامين والروائين والمخرجين السينمائيين فشكل البومة المتفرد عن باقي الطيور مغري للرسم والأعمال الفنية الأخرى بشكل عام.

عندما كان ديزموند موريس طفلاً قام بقتل بوم جريح لإنهاء حياته بدلاً من موته البطيء ، إلا أن ضميره أخذ يأنبه طيلة حياته لذا أراد من كتابه التكفير عن ذنبه ..!

سبق أن قرأت لسلسلة الحيوانات منها الغراب ، لكن هذه مختلفة كلياً هى أشبه بموسوعة تطرق صاحبه عن البوم من الجانب الفسيولوجي ، الإنثربولوجي وبالأخص في الجانب الأدبي والثقافي .

لماذا نعبس من رؤية البوم ؟!

Die Eule hat in den letzten Jahren einen Aufschwung erlebt: Überall finden sich Taschen, T-Shirts und Becher mit niedlichen Eulenfiguren. Doch davor war sie jahrhundertelang verhasst und verschrieen. Wieso das?

Lovely little reflection on the history of the owl through culture and in nature. Easy to read, lovely to look at and quite informative though this book brings up the knotty problem for me of evolution and don't worry i am not denying evolution but only the struggle I still have with the by chance part of the theory. I admit my personal bias had me on the owls' side before I ever read the first page. An owl lived in the oak tree outside my bedroom window when I was a kid. I have a cheesy owl coffee mug. I like owls as much as the "I like turtles" kid likes, well, turtles. I have read a numbèr of books about Owls, but particularly enjoyed this one. With references to history, medicine and art, it made for an insightful read. It is littered with beautiful reference images and the overall tone is much lighter than other similar reads. Would highly recommend to Owl lovers and Ornithology nerds!

Owls are interesting birds because most of us learn what they look like when we are children even if we never see one in real life. (I hear them at my house, but I've only seen a few in rehabilitation centers and none in the wild.) This book is very easy to read and contains a lot of information that invites further research. It is very short, meaning that nothing is discussed in great detail, but the book achieves what it is supposed to do: create a portrait of owls. At some points, I don't think the translation was completely clear (e.g. use of pronouns when it is unclear what/who they are referring to), however, that happened only two or three times.

Full of wonderful owl information. Morris was both an artist and and a zoologist. It shows! If I had one little niggle... why not anything on the Morepork from New Zealand? However, despite that, in a short book it is utterly packed with information. Who knows where 'heads or tails comes from? Athens, where an owl was on the money. I am OBSESSED with owls. By ‘obsessed’, I’m talking over a decade of collecting owl memorabilia (I lost count at about 320) and I even have an owl tattoo. Believe it or not, I don’t like “just any old” owls in my collection, either. Knowing this, it is safe to assume that a social/cultural/natural history book on owls is right up my alley. Enter Reaktion Books (I am a fan of their ‘Edible Series’); with an installment for their ‘Animal Series’ entitled, “Owl” by Desmond Morris. In case you are w I am OBSESSED with owls. “Owl” is a glorious social history of owls consisting of glossy pages with 123 illustrations. Although “Owl” is not a coffee table book in the sense that it isn’t hardback or oversized; it is certainly a feast for the senses. However, don’t assume “Owl” to be a light, fluffy read because Morris has conducted extensive research on the subject.

Morris divides “Owl” into logical chapters beginning with the natural history of owls and then advancing into the roles of owls (medicinal, symbolic, emblematic, literary, etc). The growth is natural, engaging, and makes sense while the reader is fascinated with owl knowledge (even I, being an owl whiz, learned new facts!). The text is clear, concise, and easy to retain creating excitement with the reader and encouraging page-turning.

Although the information in “Owl” is educational; Morris also infuses some humor into the text, lightening the load and also sums up each chapter’s chapter content with the final paragraph. On the other hand, the book is mostly an overview on the topic designed to wet the appetite and therefore readers seeking elaboration will be disappointed (at least further investigation is sparked).

“Owl” features a heavy focus on owl symbolism with Morris stating examples of owls in cultural-historic means but also venturing into their symbolic essence. At times, the arguments are elementary and not thorough but it seems that this is due to the ‘overview’ format of work versus that of Morris’s lack of scholarly merit.

The final chapters of “Owl” take a break from the social history view and emphasize the biology and natural science of the animals. Morris’s text becomes increasingly technical and may be a bit too academic for some readers. The accompanying photos in these sections have often times been included in other owl books or field guides making them familiar to avid owl readers (which is a slight frustration) but not detrimental to the overall work. There is an issue with the captioning of some of the photos such as on pages 172-173, where a raven is called a crow. I guess the editor missed that one…

The conclusion of “Owl” is abrupt with no summation and is therefore not memorable. However, Morris provides an appendix complete with an owl history timeline, species list (classification), references, bibliography, and an “Associations & Websites” list (which also has some editing mistakes).

Despite a few minor flaws; “Owl” is delightful, readable, and yet informative with a pleasurable writing style from Morris. Taking only about a day to complete; “Owl” is a must-read for owl-lovers and will both entertain and educate.

Owl begins with a dramatic introduction in which Desmond Morris states both the fame and the obscurity of the owl, and recounts a moment during his childhood where an owl...well, that would be spoiling it...though this incident is probably what persuaded him to write the book.
The book has several chapters but I see four main sections of the book. The history of Owls, the symbolic role of owls, the personality of owls, and owls today. the first chapter begins with the author giving us some background information of prehistoric owls, with some fantastic pictures of ancient cave paintings. Then, we launch into part 2, of the book; book, legends, stories and myths involving owls. Then Mr. Morris begins to discuss owls today, appearances in pop culture or otherwise , types of owls and how they behave.
Some of the pictures in this book are really amazing. Mr. Morris has clearly only chosen the very finest photos and drawings of owls, which does in fact really add to the experience.
I have also noticed, while reading, that Mr. Morris has undoubtedly taken his time and been serious with this book. Probably the event with the owl in Morris’ early life affected this. Maybe not. Either way, plenty of detail is included in the chapters of this book. Every African tribe, every totem pole, every key chain used for good luck. Desmond clearly wants to preach what he knows to us, and that truly is important in a book; that the author is keen to teach. All in all, this is an extremely accomplished book, and a fantastic way to look at one of the world’s best loved birds from any angle you could imagine. Whether you are very knowledgeable about birds, or just interested in a slight way, Owl sure is a fantastic achievement. ...more

خصص الكاتب فصلًا آخر عن البوم الشعارية ذاكرًا فيه عدة منظمات ومؤسسات اتخذت من شكل البوم شعارًا لها كالنوادي الرياضية لوصفه طائرًا جارحًا عندما يغير فقد يقتل خصمه، كما كان رمزًا لشعارات تدل على الليل والهدوء والحكمة والفناء.
وفي مجال الأدب فإن الكثير من كتاب القصص الأدبية للأطفال وكذلك الشعراء والنحاتين تطرقوا لحياة البوم بشيء من الإسهاب نظرًا لأنه كان ومازال مثار الجدل لطباعه الغريبة وشكله المميز.
أما في الفن التشكيلي فيذكر موريس العديد من الفنانين قاموا برسم البوم، فهناك لوحات بوم عاطفية وأخرى كرتونية وثالثة هزلية، ومن أشهر فناني القرن العشرين كان بيكاسو الذي أنتج سلسلة كاملة من لوحات ورسومات البومة كما أنه احتفظ ببومة صغير في بيته.

I found the information in here very interesting. I must say though, I found the author's way of portraying the information fairly biased and at times fairly narrow-minded, from an ecologist's point of view; e.g., "The ground squirrels known as prairie dogs used to exist in vast numbers in the Americas before human populations began to proliferate and interfere with the long-established balance of nature"(page 184). وأظنه أكثر إمتاعًا من فيلم وثائقي عن البوم. الكتاب شامل للبوم من كل النواحي
في الفن والأساطير والأشعار والعلاج الشعبي والخرافات القبلية
في النهاية ذكر بعض خصائصه الطبيعية،
