I'm surmising that this is just a retelling of a TV episode in book form, but it is nicely presented in a way that even kids who haven't seen the episode won't be lost.

Wackiness ensues when the adults are too busy squabbling over what to watch on TV and what to make for dinner to pay attention to the fact that Grandpa has won a live turkey, and is having the bird delivered to the Rugrats' house. When Angelica the bully clues in the babies on what happens to turkeys on Thanksgiving, the Rugrats vow to protect their new friend.

There's a sweet scene in which the kids circle the turkey to protect him from the adults, and the parents come to the belated conclusion that Thanksgiving isn't all about food or football after all. The family has an unusual--but happy--dinner and the turkey remains very much alive, and even befriends the family dog.

A section in the back tells the (very) short-form version of the traditional Thanksgiving story, and makes the inference that everybody eats turkey--but didn't we just see an example of turkeys as friends, not food??

Most of the first and second graders didn't know the Rugrats. So they didn't get how funny some of the things that Grandpa Boris did or who Reptar is...but I thought it was great. Still a funny story for the kids about a turkey who gets saved on Thanksgiving!
