Goodnight Kiss 2 was published 4 years after the first and about that much time has passed in the novel timeline as well. While we aren't given exact details of what tragedies occurred in the interim, it's clear that blood-draining is common 'round these parts. There are many references to past murders at the beachy tourist trap, with some of the teens on holiday doubling their vacation plans with plots to avenge the deaths of girlfriends and siblings.

Vampire Island remains a haunting presence and secluded home for hordes of bats and vampires masquerading as bats. The new gang of teen vamps aren't pranksters like the last batch, but they do suffer from a familiar gambling habit which seems to be a defining trait of vampires in the Fear Street universe. Once again they are eager to bet who will drain the "nectar" out of their human boyfriend first. The twist this time is that one of the potential victims is on to their vampire schemes. If only he can convince his friends of the truth, perhaps they can put a stop to all the murder and mayhem!

If only...

While the length of the sequel is the same as the first, this is thanks to some crafty blank page placement. The narrative is broken up into multiple "parts" for no particular reason, except to add blank space on either side of the heading, and chapter endings conveniently extend half a sentence on to the next page. In actuality, the content is 10,000 words less than the prior book. Not that I'm complaining. The last book was unnecessarily long and even this one, as brisk and breezy as it is, the premise wears itself out pretty quick. At least half the book is devoted to a poor guy trying to convince his friends to believe that vampires are real. That kind of dilemma feels more appropriate in the Goosebumps universe and it's disappointing to see it relied on so heavily here.

Still, Vampires plus Fear Street equals a good time. Not recommended for those first venturing into the series, but a must-stop side attraction for fans.

This was definitely an interesting and fast read. I picked it up yesterday at the thrift store and was through it very quickly. The writing and pacing isn’t of the finest quality (not that I expected that from the author of Goosebumps) but R.L. Stein does continue to prove why he’s sold so many novels. Wasn’t totally expecting those twists at the end but they definitely made up for any other deficiencies.

We’re not in Shadyside anymore—we’re in a tiny beach town where Shadysiders like to go on vacay! Also there’s something here called “Vampire Island” and it is not a reality show but it should be bc these vamps are always hangry and weirdly competitive ?

This sequel is fun and silly AND we get a few twists with a gnarly ending, and a decent body count. FYI there are a couple of disturbing animal deaths ☹️

Overall v bonkers, which is what I wanted 🧛

Still keeping my five star rating again out of nostalgia but also because this was a really good book and a worthy follow-up to the first Goodnight Kiss.

So because it is a sequel there are a few spoilers for the first book so if you have not read it than proceed at your own risk for some spoilers.

This cover is so much more tame than the original but again if you take that bat off it looks like some teen romance. Mine has the sticker about writing The Best Friend 2 so sort of nostalgic but still like a big zit on an otherwise beautiful and shiny cover.

Even though it was released a few years after the first one it is set-up as only one year later like all of the numbered sequels.

We get a prologue with a girl named Diana and a boy named Eric and it is sort of implied she is the vampire but it is actually the opposite. You would think people would stay away from Sandy Hollow after all that goes on and a big island of bats off the shore of the beach but I guess not...

Billy Naughton is back in Sandy Hollow a year after the death of his girlfriend, Joelle. He's reluctant to tell his buds that he was in a mental hospital due to the traumatic shock of finding his girlfriend's dead body.

Jay Windley and Nate Stanton just think he was in a regular hospital due to some accident for a whole year. Billy has come back to Sandy Hollow to find the vampire that killed Joelle and destroy any vampire that comes in his way. He is forced to tell the truth when the older boys and Nate's little sister Lynette see two large bats carry away a small dog *whimper* and fail to rescue it at the child's tearful pleas.

Three chapters and twenty-four pages in who should show up but April Blair, now a vampire.

She spies the two vampires who carried off the dog and befriends them after some words to keep them from attacking her. Redhead Kylie and Irene with the blonde curls welcome her into their fold and they head off to find some fresh new meat among the newly arrived summer people.

The girls happen to spot Billy and his friends so they come up with a little bet about who can turn their victim faster. Kylie makes a beeline for Billy, Irene sets her sights on Nate and that leaves April with quiet and awkward Jay.

Billy does not seem that interested in Kylie even though she is trying a little too hard and Irene doesn't seem to be getting much luck with Nate since his little sister is always around. April and Jay, however, seem to have hit it off very well. April gets Billy, Jay and Nate to try out for a play at the summer theater along with her, Kylie and Irene and it just happens to be...about vampires.

Uncanny huh?

Despite Billy's plans to go vampire hunting in a quest for revenge, it looks like this summer may just be better than his last. Well...until it doesn't.

The girl who won the lead in the play is soon found dead and she has the same bite marks on her throat as Joelle did. Then more bodies are found drained of blood and soon Jay is walking around, pale and tired.

Billy has seen all of this before and everything is pointing straight to April as being the vampire.

His focus on April to try and keep his best friend Jay from becoming a vampire or ending up dead and drained like Joelle, Billy has no idea that Irene and Kylie are also vampires. Will he be too late in figuring it out...will the vampires get Billy before he has a chance to get them in return?

Good reveals, good twists and one awesome ending! When Stine is good at writing, he is very good.

It isn't filled with much snark like the last one because these vampires don't bicker with each other much yet there is still that dark romantic atmosphere. There is a little more gruesome gore than the last one and the tone does seem to be much more grim than the first Goodnight Kiss.

Despite the difference, I couldn't pick one over the other. Goodnight Kiss 2 is fine on its own and only has the briefest of mention really to Goodnight Kiss that you could read both of them separately.

Don't believe me? If you haven't read the first one yet and get your hands on a copy of Goodnight Kiss 2...find out for yourself. I read the sequel novel, Song of The Vampire, to Carmen Adams' own vampire book, The Band, and could follow the story just fine without reading the first one.

If a story is written well, it shouldn't matter where you start because going back to the beginning is just as fun if you have a love for reading...

As I went into this book, I was prepared for a lot of eye rolling. After all, the first book had the vampires all consistently called blood “nectar.” Which may I say, is such a ridiculously stupid way to refer to blood. It would be fine if it was a phrase one specific vampire used. But they all use it and they all use it all the time. Fortunately, this book doesn’t use the phrase as often, but it is still the only way the vampires refer to blood. So, while it’s still stupid, it doesn’t occur as much and therefore isn’t as annoying as it was with the first book.

In the story Billy isn’t the only character you are introduced to that is looking to kill vampires. In the beginning, there is a teenage girl who is also on a mission to rid Sandy Hollow of its vampire infestation. The fact she basically disappears after the first chapter, left me wanting to make snarky remarks about how maybe she’s the Fear Street Slayer.

As for the story itself, it was on the okay side for a Fear Street novel. I wouldn’t call it one of the best books, but it’s certainly an improvement from the previous book. However, it left something unexplained. At one point, Billy encounters a wolf and has to fight for his life. He claims it’s a vampire who was able to shift into wolf form… and yet, every vampire in this book and the previous book could only take the form of a bat. I’m not sure what was up with that, but I half expected them to introduce werewolves into the mix. Oh well. Another Fear Street book has been reread and I can move on to the next!

Moral of the Story: Vampire stories can be really great when they aren't written by Stephenie Meyer.

The Usual Suspect(s): Vampires April, Irene, and Kylie

The Actual Suspect(s): Vampires!!

Body Count: So high!! People have to die so the vampires can live. Even animals perish in this one (a dog and a seagull).

Tagline: It's the kiss of death.

Plot: So, guys, I HATE vampire stories. It's everywhere in culture. I can't fucking stand it. So unoriginal. I've defected to Team Zombie, though even they are getting on my nerves for being everywhere. However, this Fear Street Super Chiller was super entertaining. Onwards with the goods! ... by which I mean bats, blood, and stakes (oh my)!

Nate, Jay, and Billy (our protagonist) are spending their summer at Sandy Hollow, a resort area. A little bit off the shore of Sandy Hollow lies Vampire Island. Lots of bats are around this summer, but Billy knows they are really vampires in disguise. He is Billy, Vampire Slayer, of course. His girlfriend, Joelle, was killed at Sandy Hollow by vampires last summer and Billy has come to take (I mean stake) his revenge. He's spent the past year in a mental hospital getting over things, and he's not a happy camper. In fact, he's pretty emo. He's so hellbent on killing vampires that he does nothing else the whole book except brood about it. Our trio is first greeted on Sandy Hollow with a rather somber sight: a gang of bats has just taken hold of a dog, and they FLY the dog up into the air. I've always hated when writers involve animals in horror. I think it's extremely gratuitous. I had to ignore this scene because it made me so sad.

Over on Vampire Island we meet bitchin' vampire babes April (from the first book), Irene, and Kylie. Having not yet been introduced to Tru Blood (or whatever the Twilight vamps are smoking), they are itching for "nectar" (read: human blood). They head out to the mainland and, as luck would have it, spot our main trio. What good fortune! The ladies make a bet to see who can sink their fangs into their man first. Winner gets the other two as well. Good luck with that!!

The BVB (bitchin' vampire babes) invite Nate, Jay, and Billy to partake in a vampire play that is being put on at the local theater. What a fine choice! Kylie is hoping for the lead, as well as Billy's succulent neck. Nate and Irene pair up, as well as Jay and April. Everyone gets a role in the play, but a girl named Mae-Linn gets the starring role. Billy invites her out for a Coke later that night. Kylie is none-too-pleased with the sudden turn of events. She needn't worry for long. Mae-Linn turns up on the beach that night dead from a vampire's kiss. I'm pretty upset. I liked Mae-Linn.

Billy finds a bone (er, vein?) to pick with April. She's been spending an awful lot of time with Jay, and he has become very sick and lethargic. Billy wants to get a good look at his neck, but he's all, "Bug off, you vampire-loving creep." Billy is worried, because this is just how his girlfriend Joelle was last summer before she was ultimately killed by the vampires. Billy's pretty dense, because he focuses all his attention on April but doesn't notice anything uncharacteristic about Kylie or Irene. Like the fact that neither one of them eat any food.

Kylie gets a wild hair and decides to take Billy to Vampire Island. Really, she just wants to win the bet and eat Billy first before the others. I'm sure she could wait a little longer if she knew that she doesn't have much competition. Billy thinks he'll sneak in some good vampire staking time on this exciting excursion. And, in fact, he does manage to snake one vampire disguised as a wolf. It was pretty weird sounding. Where does RL Stine get this stuff? He and Kylie manage to stumble over another dead body killed by vampires. What a sucky vacation!

At this point Billy becomes a vampire-killing maniac. Not that he actually manages to kill any, just that he keeps mentioning vampires to non-believers Nate and Jay who are really sick and tired of his shenanigans. Billy convinces Jay to let him prove to him that vampires really exist. They are going to set a trap for April in the theater. After the party that night, they are going to take April to the basement of the theater and keep her there until morning when they will open the door and expose her to sunlight and she'll immediately die.

It works perfectly for Billy. There is rain that night, and he, Jay, and April all run to the basement theater. Jay helps Billy stall for time until sunrise. Come morning Billy shoves her in the sunlight but - wait! April's not a vampire. She's Diane, Vampire Killer. April, from the previous book, was her cousin who got bit last summer. The real April couldn't live with herself and killed herself when they got back to Shadyside by stepping in the sunlight. Now THAT'S the sequel I would have liked to have read. Not that this one isn't good, but that would have had so much more depth. Anyway, Diane is back on the island pretending to be April because they lookalike and because this way she will be able to kill Irene and Kylie and get revenge.

Now that Billy and Diane play for the same team, they head for one last jaunt to Vampire Island. As white people often do, Billy and Diane split up. Billy comes upon a burned down cabin with three coffins inside. The first one has nothing but girls' clothes. The second one holds Irene and Kylie. Billy has about 1,000 stakes in his backpack, but he hesitates over Kylie's heart, because he is a dumbass. Naturally it is a delay in the story so that Kylie can wake up. She and Irene wake up and immediately lunge for Billy. He's tricky, though, and stabs Kylie in the eyeballs with his fingers. Awesome! He then stakes her through the heart. Diane shows up at this point to watch Billy melt Irene in the sunlight. (It was night only moments ago).

They celebrate all this vampire slaying by going to a pizza joint. What is it with Fear Street and pizza joints? I love pizza too, but I'm just saying. They don't eat anything else! Except blood, that is. So Diane and Billy are joking and having a good time until he cuts the pizza for Diane but ends up cutting his finger. No blood comes out. What?? Yep, Billy is a vampire. That mental hospital he was in last year was actually a coffin hiding him from the cold, cruel daylight. I'm not sure, then, why the sunlight that killed Irene didn't also kill him. Anyway, he reaches over to Diane and sinks his teeth into her neck in the middle of the restaurant. Perhaps people will just think it's more rehearsal for the play??

Gaping Plot Holes: Why didn't these vampires sparkle? I'm joking. Also, at the end Irene gets killed by sunlight when the sun was just about to go down. Tsk tsk. Anddd can't vampires recognize their own kind? How on earth could Billy not sense Irene and Kylie were vampires or that April/Diane really wasn't one, and vice versa?? And why would Billy try so hard to save Nate and Jay when I'm sure he really just wants to kill them? Wow, lots of open ends in this one.

In my six years of reading and reviewing Fear Street books, I have seen a wide range of quality. There have been some fantastic reads, and there have been some real clunkers. I really want to write a balanced review of Goodnight Kiss 2, but everything about it felt phoned-in. It was almost like the plot felt like an afterthought. It didn’t help that the lead character, Billy, was a complete idiot. He spent the book hellbent on getting revenge on the vampires without once ever coming up with a coherent plan for doing so. Having him as the only POV character got really tedious. There were some good ideas at play, but they all felt squandered. The twist at the end felt equal parts lazy and cruel. There is a nostalgic part of me that remembers loving this book in fifth grade. That part of me has been trying to find some positive things to say. The best that I can come up with is that at least the vampires didn’t go overboard with referring to blood as “nectar” like they did in the fist Goodnight Kiss. I wish the book had focused on an entirely different narrative for Billy, which is to say I wish this had been an entirely different book. In the end, Goodnight Kiss 2 was as tedious to read as it has been to review.

Score: 1

This was a pretty good book. It says it's a super chiller, but it wasn't really that scary at all. I kind of already knew there was going to be a plot twist in the end because like all R.L. Stine books...especially the Goosebumps books, there is always something that makes you question the whole story and say "hey if I knew that at the beginning this book would have sucked." Summer originally told e to read this book so I took her advice and I thought it was a decent read. I think some of the Fear Street have the potential to be better and scarier. All in all this is still a better vampire book than Twilight.

Sandy Hollow’s Vampires are back!

This a prose novel which is part of the “Fear Street Super Chiller” book series.

THE NECTAR!!!... ONCE MORE WITH (MIXED) FEELING!

This is a sequel of the first Goodnight Kiss, and while I think that it was more elaborate and entertaining than the first, I also had some mixed feelings since there are some events and twists that I wasn’t entirely thrilled about them.

If in the previous book, we have some prototypes of Jessie & James from Team Rocket, in this sequel we have some prototypes of Annie & Oakley (also) from Team Rocket (appearing in the anime film Pokemon: Heroes released on Japan in 2002 and the rest of the world in 2004) but we have to take in account that this sequel was published in 1996 (seriously, is it that these books were read by the people that did Pokemon???)

No it’s the turn of Irene and Kylie from Team Eternal, they are two female vampires (that’s why I tend to think of Annie & Oakley this time) but they meet with April (who was made into vampire at the end of the past book, I don’t want to make spoilers but it’s impossible to do a review of this sequel without mention that event, but even that there are a lot more than meets the eye, and trust me I am concealing the juicy stuff about it, and knowing that April turned into a vampire at the end of the previous entry, it’s just the peak of the iceberg of plot twists in this sequel.

A thing quite unimaginative is that in this book there is once again a “vampire bet” with the same conditions and once again without having any winning thing about it. A bet without any price is quite dumb.

It’s odd that R.L. Stine is like not able to conceive a “summer adventure” happening in other place than a beach, and for some odd reason, it seems that Shadyside doesn’t have any beach, therefore in these “summer” vampire books (and other novels like Party Summer), the events are occuring in other towns and places different than Shadyside and it’s infamous Fear Street, which is odd as I say since it’s the title thing of the book series.

The humans in this tale seemed to be Billy along with his friends Jay and Nate and they are the targets of the bet made by Irene and Kylie with April, and they allure them to the tryouts of a summer play (that I am pretty sure it was organized by vampires since they’re made only at nights), so it’s kinda “High School Musical” with vampires. Billy lost his girlfriend a year ago and it was because vampires, so he’s back to get revenge on them.

I won’t detail any further since trust me, I am commenting more about this story, it will be impossible not spoiling the various plot twists on it. That, for one side, they’re good since I didn’t see them coming, but while surprising, I wasn’t totally thrilled about how the story turned, so I think that my chosen rate is the best possible made in my personal opinion.

Reviewed on Lili Lost in a Book

The first book in this duology was so much fun, so I was really looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, it was not as great as Goodnight Kiss .

We start off the book with this character named Diana, who was really badass! But we didn’t really get back to her until the end of the book, which really sucked.

But the person (or vampire, I should say 😏) who is back is April! The plot twist in the last book was that Gabri did manage to turn April into a vampire! So now, vampire April has her hungry sights set on Billy and his friends. Billy’s girlfriend Joelle was killed by vampires last summer and that messed him SO much he was actually in a mental hospital for a year. But now he’s back to hunt down the vampires who killed her. This story should have been interesting, but it just wasn’t. Billy says he came back to kill the vampires, but he did pretty much nothing to achieve this goal! Plus, we got another bet between two vampires, which LITERALLY already happened in the first book. Whoever turns their human boy into a vampire wins. We did this already!

So this book was definitely not as good as book one, but it did have its moments and turned out to be an okay read. I highly recommend the first book, though! That one was such a fun summer read!

The Fear Street connection: April is from Shadyside? I don’t even know. I don’t think Fear Street was even mentioned 😐

My absolute favorite part of this book is that the protagonist was super gung-Ho about going to this beach town and slaying some vampires - he‘s ADAMANT about it.

Except he SUCKS at making plans and then completely fails to commit when he comes across real vampires in repose.

Which… doesn’t really fit in with the twist…

There was a line about how he was strong for a mortal and that was the tipping point for the eventual twist, but if he was aiming to kill all sorts of vampires and he was a vampire himself, you’d think he would be a little more ruthless when it came to murdering them.

Also, he was totally affected by the mind-clouding that another vampire was doing to him and THAT doesn’t feel right.

I don’t know. I wouldn’t say there were plot holes in it, but I gave the side-eye to an awful lot of stuff when I finished it.

Re-read. This is a pretty disappointing follow-up to the first book. Billy is seeking revenge on the vampires after they killed his girlfriend last summer. Except Billy and Joelle weren't even in the first book so all this backstory is missing. April makes a return by convincing two other female vampires to join her in creating more vampires in a similar bet as the last book. Of course they pick Billy and his friends. There was some graphic seagull mutilation involved that was very not kid-friendly, but other than that it was just slow going. With some random death sprinkled in the plot, not much else happened. It was definitely disappointing after all the fun of the first Goodnight Kiss.

We are heading back to Fear Street and to Sandy Grove. This is a place where the dead fly freely, sleep the days away and count down to Summer.

From our last outing we know these are no ordinary vampires. These ones like playing games. In this game the winner walks away with the prize - Nectar.

Meet Kylie, Irene and April. 3 vampires on a mission. Their targets - Jay, Nate and Billy.

Be warned and reminded that if anything is related to Fear Street or Shadyside nothing is straight forward.

The feeding season has begun and let us see what unravels. It may not or maybe obvious. Let us start our own game and what we think.

Psss a little secret. Vampires can turn to bats.

This one was shaping up to be better than the first until it completely crumbled in the third act. I can’t fault aesthetic story choices but I did not enjoy the two major twists, and the ending felt rushed. Where this story truly shined over the first was the world of sandy hollow feels way more fleshed out than previously. Ultimately there should be a third book that finally finishes all the vampires on the island.

The best part of this book was Diana being revealed to be April's cousin and posing as April. Billy being a vampire was not all that interesting although I did expect one final twist at the very end. To be honest, I really thought it would have been Diana who was actually an avenging vampire.
