Maisyoor island has a history. Inhabited by the tribes Oksata and Yerthinga, the island has a dark history of the massacre. The blame falls on Yerthinga tribe which is comparatively hostile. But are they really the barbarians that they are tagged to be? There comes a bunch of researchers with Samudran who is a photographer. Are they safe in the island? What are the dark secrets that the island beholds?
The plot takes off at a slow pace when the readers are introduced to the ambiance of Maisyoor the island or forest for that matter and the two tribes living there. A little bit of history here and a little more fantasy there topped up with a pinch of suspense. I loved how the author maneuvered the plot through the lanes of Maisyoor while introducing the characters seamlessly and while the intros merged with the plot naturally.
Samudran, often known as Sammy, and his crew are on a research expedition when they find themselves in a moral and ethical predicament that might alter the direction of their life in Maisyoor, a small, isolated island off the coast of Southern India. This narrative is about Sammy, a twenty-three-year-old orphan with a difficult upbringing and a non-believer as well, and how he resolves that conundrum. The third-person narration, which I thought to be extremely odd but intriguing and appropriate for this story, begins and finishes fifty years in the future with the main story taking place in the present. The narrative is divided into three sections. It starts slowly with the research team's daily tasks and Sammy and Meila's courtship, but By the third section, it picks up steam and transforms into an action-packed race against time, which I wasn't anticipating but is a pleasant and unexpected turn to the story. The twist, in my opinion, is well-timed and does not let down. This book is for you if you enjoy reading about island explorations and exotic experiences that include a good amount of romance, action, and excitement. Apart from Sammy and Meila, there are numerous characters in this novel, but Kargam stands out to me because he is presented as the embodiment of bravery, honour, and excellent judgement. Each character is fully realised and given the appropriate amount of screen time and importance in the narrative. I appreciated the technical, Moral and ethical debates between the characters and the subjects brought up appear to have been thoroughly thought out and researched, making them both highly educational as well.
Aside from a few adjectives that I thought were a little too American in their presentation, I thought the novel nailed the mark as a tale of morality, honour, and bravery. Overall, the author did a fantastic job on her first book. Would advise.

I bought this book on recommendation from my friend as I am always game for adventure fiction. This book is an absolute combo with thrilling prologue adept in making the reader curious enough to read the rest of the book.
The author has very well narrated the whole depiction with in-depth research and created an environment of tropical island where the characters undergo various emotions and drama. The details of this book are so intricately described that the reader moves along with the book and is bound to think about it even after the pages are long done. The main protagonist Sammy is a wonderful character woven around different moral aspects like humanity, love, brotherhood, suspense. I bet any reader who is fond of a fast paced-plot in an adventurous theme, would love this book.
The narration and the plot set in the tropical island flows ahead with an easy and interpretable soft language and manages to hold the attention of the reader till the end. Awesome book with a dash of romance and adventure.
Samudran The Extraordinary Journey of an Ordinary Man is a debut novel written by the author A R. Vikram.
This tale revolves around Samudran aka Sammy, a twenty-three-year-old orphan with a difficult upbringing. it's about Professor Rajan, Sammy, Sangeetha and Karthik visiting Mayisoor island for a research project. The project is about the medicinal plants on the island. The group finds themselves in the middle of a dark conspiracy. I am not going to reveal what it is but I am sure you are going to enjoy it.
The author's use of language and storytelling is masterful, making the book a joy to read. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to read this book.
Some stories inspired to bring the best of you. This is one such story. This is the story of Samudran. A young man, who is also known as Sammy.
He visits an island which is inhabited by tribes. However, he finds out that the tribes are being misused and their trust is being hampered.
We read how the protagonists tries to save the tribes. There is also a love angle in the book which was refreshing to read. This book has all the elements like action, romance, suspense, intrigue and the importance of virtue.
The essence of being a human is depicted through the role of the protagonist and its inspiring to read such characters.
Samudran - An extraordinary journey of an ordinary man by Anu Radha Vikram
The book is really a journey of love, courage, and wisdom - I agree with the author's claim about the book. She could take the reader prying throughout the book that I finished reading almost at a stretch.
The hero Samudran alias Saamy, is a handsome young man, who made himself an atheist due to his bitter childhood.
Saamy being a professional photographer is selected for a scientific research project group on the Island of Maisyoor. Name of the project is Project Varoogu. Varoogu means wellness in the Oksatan language which is the language of only two tribes of the Island, Oksazans. Oksatans and Yerthingans ate two tribes of the Island who are like two rival countries in side the same Island. Oksatans are depicted by the author as wise, mild, and more human than the Yerthingans who are with somewhat brutal behaviour. The hero falls in love with an Okssatan girl Meila. The village chief got a 3- 4 year white-skinned girl lost in the forest between the dead bodies of some foreigners supposedly scientists who came to study the Island. The same girl got adopted by the chief and his wife Dayligamma and named Melia, by now a grown-up ok satan girl in all senses. The story of Meila goes like that.
Saamy manages to be on the island at last marrying Melia, as he wished, not that easy though. The author has done justice to the readers' spirit of moral values, at every turning point like a full scene of the packing of Saamy from the project, saamy's first escape from Yerthigans with the help of Kargam, revealing his purpose of staying in the island to the chief, shift of Kargam's attitude towards Saamy and Meila, professor Rajan's visit to trap Saamy, and finally at North Tower. Everything reveals the author's competency in the art of storytelling with some failures though .. things as the mobile tower, Internet cell phones, and such gadgets fifty years back .. otherwise the story turned out to be a good mild read.
A book depicting a journey of an ordinary man, fills with romance, mystery, thrill, action, adventure, emotions and many more.
The book tells a story of a twenty three years old photographer, Samudran aka Sammy, who's life change thoroughly after he visits an Maisyoor Island to help a professor, Dharma Rajan, where he not only falls in love also find an heinous act going on against the tribe in that island by one of his own.
And in the story we get to see him, an atheist, unorthodox, and an independent thinker, changing from a good person to an great individual, as he fights for his love, against all the differences, obstacles, as well as trying to exposing the bad people to the trusting tribe to save them.
The plot of the story is really interesting and intriguing and quite fast paced. The characters are also well developed and well thought out. As the book not only gives us a good romance and action, mystery, it also gives us a well researched life of the tribes, their habits, culture, differences, but also give us different emotions like love, friendships, brotherhood, humanity.
So an exciting book, I would like to recommend to all.
I was truly attracted by this book when i read the prologue.
The prologue for "Samudran" by A R Vikram introduces three tribal boys who are trying to build a trap to catch a rabbit. They are interrupted by an old man, who helps them fix the trap and then talks to them about the difference between needs and wants. He tells them that they can use animals and plants for survival, self-defense, and food, but they should not use them just for their own pleasure. The old man then tells the boys a story about the "Samudran," a magical sea creature that can grant wishes, but only if they are selfless and made with good intentions.
INTERSTING??! Right.
Grab this book to know the whole plot. I assure you, this book is not going to disappoint you.
This book truly has it all - drama, suspense, and even a dash of humour.
I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a captivating read that will keep them turning the pages late into the night.
Thank you AnuRadha Vikram for a beautiful piece. This story is about Samudran alias Sammy who is orphaned at very young age. He being a atheist and doesn't believe in religions. At the age of early 20's he is like a very matured person having a vast knowledge of how the world works, which in result he lost hope in the world's beautiful thing Love. This book is about the life of Samudran how his life changes when he reaches island name Maisyoor, which is a small island in the southeastern coast of India. This remote place has two types of tribes living first the Oksata and the other being Yerthinga. There are other characters as well which are Professor Rajan who is the main person who hires Samudran as a photographer, Karthik and Sangeetha as a scientist for studying the culture of the plants and flowers. First part of the book which has the introduction of these characters and also there is romance between Sammy and a tribe girl. But then the real story starts once he falls in love with this girl and he wants to permanently shift to the island and then they discover they are just a spawn to a very big problem. How they come out of that problem and do the tribe girl and Sammy come together in the end is the remaining story of the book. AnuRadha has written this book in a very simple english language. All the characters mentioned in the book are also given a proper roles. Overall I would say its really a very good Goodreads... :)
The fast-paced plot tells the tale of a tropical adventure that comprises emotions ranging from love and romance to loyalty and betrayal. It is a thrilling and action-filled tale that keeps the readers engaged and captivated till the end. The various incidents and situations add spice to the story making the book quite entertaining. The book offers a combination of science, suspense, adventure, and honor and contains various twists and turns. Despite being a little lengthy, it comprises an alluring storyline and the author needs to be applauded for deftly weaving various moral and ethical notes in the plot. The efficient narration and the well-researched content make it a truly amazing book that will resonate with the readers.
An extraordinary story of an ordinary boy who goes through the twists and turns of life by bumping into a last moment assignment not knowing that he will experience life at the next level of his imagination.
Samudran a 23-year-old photographer is all set to explore a tiny island that has its own secrets and culture to dwell in. Meeting Meila, daughter of a tribal chief ignites the fire of love and marriage within the mindset of our own protagonist Samudran aka Sammy.
A tale of adventure, thrill and incidents which will make you experience even chill written exceptionally to add spice to the story. The book although is a little lengthy read have the charm to keep you captivated till the end. An alluring storyline with well-written characters add to the story. I enjoyed it really well.
The Extraordinary Journey of an Ordinary Man written by A R Vikram is a wonderful fictional read.
The tale revolves around Professor Rajan, Sammy, Karthik and Sangeetha were on a journey to an Island for a research project about the medicinal valued plants growing there. Though they had planned some research work, the actual things happening on the Island were completely different.
The story unravels a bunch of suspense as we go through it.
Grab this excellent book to be lost in their world with them.
The book is really entertaining. After reading this amazing work written with utmost perfection, I recommend it to every reader. 📚

"Samudran" is a beautifully written book that explores the complex lives of Sammy and Meila.
Story begins with a slow-burning plot that gradually builds momentum as we introduced to the mysterious island of Maisyoor and the two tribes that reside there. The history of the island and its people is interwoven with elements of fantasy and a dash of suspense, creating a unique and immersive reading experience.
As the plot progresses, the pace picks up and the story becomes more engaging.
The book is full of adventures, chills, and unexpected twists that kept me engaged until the very end.
I highly recommend "Samudran" to anyone looking for a heartwarming and exciting read.
Have you ever lived a life without technology or ever dreamt of it?? It’s a straight no from most of us right!! But this author A R Vikram penned a wonderful fiction debuting a hero Sammy aka Samudran a photographer visits an island for a government project lives his entire life in that wonderful island with his love of life and becomes a member of the tribal community…Sounds different..go grab this book to know the whole picture… The author penned every character, incident wonderfully as it feels real!! A movie like experience throughout the pages… The storyline is quite gripping with a simple and lucid language…
This book has a decent cover design , it could've been better. I don't hate it but I don't love it either. Storyline revolves around a tribal island known as Mayisoor. Away from the hustle bustle of city life , this island is what we call heaven on Earth. Samudran and team is set to voyage to this island for research on this island. Everything is set and going well until Samudran discovers the heinous purpose of their expedition. This is a story of truth and greed and love and of spiritual awakening of Samudran. Writing style is simple and flow is good. Narration somewhat shakes during the book and it looses the grip to engage readers. Pace faulters at many points. Characters are defined well but at times I failed to emotionally connect with them. This book has a strong storyline but an average narration. I felt it's a good one time read.
Having beautiful cover page this book contains an interesting story to read. This is the story of Sammy aka Samudran - atheist by heart and independent thinker not believing in societal thoughts and theory starts believing in love while meeting with Meila on a remote island. He feels fortunate to take up this last minute shooting assignment. But his dreamy life situations meets with an end when one mole is found in their team planning with some foul plan. At last Sammy left to save Meila, her people and their island from the foul plan. It's a good combo of adventure, thrill, rommance and action.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
AnuRadha is a self-published author who believes in comfortable reading experience rather than heavy duty literature. This is her debut novel.
This is a journey just as the title says of Samudran alias Sammy who is a photographer. He is a last minute addition to an island exploration team consisting of scientists and experts in their own fields. But Sammy is neither, just an Ordinary Man who is independent and atheist to the core. Not that your religion matters in remote islands as these. He is backed up by a strong motivational character Meila who is a simple village girl who loves to roam around and find new places in forest. Sammy is thrown into lot of difficult situations and decision making becomes critical. Each and every character has their own debates and morals being tested.
The plot is incredible and smooth. Even though this is a lengthy novel, you are not bored by it. The sections are easy going and you just fly though the book. Language is fluid and easily graspable with no literary dictionary required just as the author says. The characters are great and they are true to their stories with no criss cross what so ever. Its hard to believe this is AnuRadha's debut novel.
Overall this is a fantastic novel. I loved the characterizations and the journey itself is unique in its nature. This book has high notes of bravery, loyalty and simplicity. I strongly advice people to just pick up this book and read it in 1 seating. Its that awesome!!! My only downside is the ending was rushed. There could have been additional chapter which explains the events that led to success of the fight and how it turned out to the enemies of nature. That additional description/ explanation would have made huge difference to the reader. Looking for future books!
Set in Maisyoor, a tiny remote island off the coast of Southern India, Samudran aka Sammy and his team on a scientific expedition find themselves faced with a moral and ethical dilemma that has the potential to change the course of their lives. How Sammy, a twenty-three-year-old orphan with a hard childhood, and a non-believer too, deals with that dilemma is what this story is about.
Written in third person, the narrative starts and ends fifty years into the future with the main story taking place in the present day, which I found quite unusual, yet interesting and apt for this story. Broken into three parts, the story begins slow with the day-to-day activities of the scientific team, and romance between Sammy and Meila, but by the third part it picks up pace to turn into an adventure-filled, action-packed race against time which I wasn’t expecting but is a surprising and welcome twist to the tale. I think the twist comes in at the right time and does not disappoint. If you are interested in island expeditions and tropical adventures with a healthy mix of romance, action, and thrill, this is the book for you.
There are many characters in this book, but the one that stands out for me apart from Sammy and Meila is Kargam, who is portrayed to be the personification of courage, honour, and good judgement. All characters are well-developed and given the right amount of space and weightage in the story. I enjoyed the scientific, moral, and ethical discussions between the characters and the topics discussed seem to be well-researched and detailed out, so quite informative as well.
Apart from some of the terms which I felt were a bit American in expression, I felt that the book hits the right note as a story of ethics, honour and courage. All in all, the author has done a great job on her debut. Would recommend.
The titular novel Samudran by A R Vikram looks like a complete package. It has got romance, adventure, action, conspiracies, betrayals, humanity, change of mind and heart, tribal wars…all staged against a tropical island named Maisyoor. A team of four people is studying medicinal plants and herbs on the island. Two are scientists: Sangeetha and Karthik. The head is the Professor Rajan. Samudran aka Sammy is the photographer. It’s controlled by two tribes: Oksatan and Yerthingans. The former friendly, while the latter is hostile! The changes and events that grip the plotline don’t happen out of blue, they are done gradually. It is a lovely piece of writing where nothing is hurried. Sammy has had a tragic past. He doesn’t believe in god, love, and marriage. However, as he trundles in the forbidden jungle of the island, he stumbles upon the tribal girl Meila. He falls in love, presumably at first sight. The momentum changed when the guys come to know about the ulterior motives of the Professor Rajan. The research was a show off. He was working for a pharmaceutical company to find some ground-breaking herbs and plants on the island. However, that discovery can upend the lives of tribal people. Sammy with the help of Sangeetha and Karthik race against the time to expose the Professor. Will they succeed in their efforts? The tribal rivalry and war is nothing less than a filmy story. Development of story, plot, climax, characters is superbly done. The only con is the length of the novel, but the narration is so lucid that you are likely to feel amazed and absorbed till you get over it. It’s also a light-hearted novel with other thrilling happenings.
Samudran is a beautiful story about a young man's adventurous project on a far away remote island, a place where he least expected to begin a new chapter of his life. He meets his love and companion of a lifetime, meets some simple-looking, high-thinking scientist friends , looks into the face of political intrigues, moral dilemmas and makes the most difficult choice as a youngster to come out of his own world view and take up the fight for humanity and ethics. In the process of all of these, he not only witnesses a very thoughtful, nature-oriented culture of a tribal life but also assimilates himself into it and emerges as a wise, matured human being he has always endeavored to become.
Samudran as a novel touches chords with everything that makes a human existence. Love, family, betrayal, ideals, science, religion, and nature's resources, around all of which a human life revolves. The simplicity with which the narrative unfolds all these complex aspects is the best part of this book.
The journey of a young couple in love, an island filled with tribal people and action-packed adventures. From betrayals to turning points, their story is one you would not want to miss.
Overall, Samudran has an exciting storyline and the way it has been crafted by the author it makes for a very smooth read it's a kind of book which you just cannot put down until you reach the last page!
Professor Rajan, Sammy, Sangeetha and Karthik visit Mayisoor island for a research project. The project is about the medicinal plants on the island and is funded (insufficiently) by Professor Rajan's university. However, what happens on the island is far different from what was planned. Some new relationships start. Some dirty, criminal secrets are discovered.
I had the privilege of visiting the Andaman Islands a few months before reading this book. Hence, I was able to relate to everything this book talks about as the island life. I wonder if this book is somewhat based on the Andamans and the resident tribes of those islands. Island life is starkly contrasting to our mainland life. Their food, lifestyle, families, art, language, everything is different and unique. Contrary to the general public opinion, they aren't brutal and always in the self-defence mode. It is we who go there and destroy their ecosystem in the name of development. We threaten their well-balanced lifestyle and they only try to protect it. The people on this island, like what I have learnt from the Andamans, are extremely amicable. It is often the mainlanders who fail them.
Coming back to the story, the group find themselves in the middle of a dark conspiracy. I am not going to reveal what it is but I am sure it will take you aback. The island trip goes from boring research to adventure of a lifetime.
The story is an edge-of-the-seat thriller with adventure, crime, love and lots of surprises. The conflict is among the tribes; the islanders versus the mainlanders; development versus environment; money versus lives. The storyline is awe-inspiring and asks the right questions - be it about God, ethics or one's life choices. The author discusses atheism without hating it and religion, without propogating it.
It is not easy to write about 350 pages without losing the flow atleast once. But the author does so. Her storytelling is vehement and masterly. She has the language and pace to engage the reader.
The characters of the book are all endearing. The old Professor Rajan, the young Sammy and Meila (the leads), the middle-aged Karthik and Sangeeta. They all are vital for the story; immensely strong and purpose-driven. My favourite character is Meila, the fiesty little woman with a passion for adventure yet childlike innocence and respect towards nature.
What I particularly liked about the book is the writing style that doesn't let you take a break. When I started this book, I thought it would take me a week. Believe me, I finished it in a few hours.
I would recommend this book to readers of all genres, including beginners.
I recieved a review copy from the author and I am posting my review voluntarily.
Book : samudran Author: A R Vikram Review the book is of contemporary romance fiction genre
Samudran, aka Sammy, is a twenty-three year old photographer. He is also an abused orphan, and an atheist to boot. A highly unorthodox and independent thinker, he accepts a last-minute assignment to work at a tiny remote island for a small scientific team planning to study the island's unique flora with amazing dietary and medicinal properties.
Meila who is burdened and blessed with her own unique past, she also happens to be the daughter of one of the tribal chiefs. In spite of his strong views against love and marriage, Sammy falls madly in love with her, but knows that there are several obstacles to overcome. Read on to find out
The book does not have a plot that will shock you, mostly you will anticipate the end. The book is enjoyable though if you want to forget reality for a while Language is lucid and engaging, characterisation could be improved I loved the little conversations between meila and sammy If you like adult fiction romance with witticisms this book is for you. Highly recommend this one 4/5
The Extraordinary Journey of an Ordinary Man, is a good combo of adventure, thrill, romance and action. The story is gonna glue readers to the book. It is the well researched book by the author as the narration along with the characterization has set a truly emotional base for the readers. Story revolves around Samudran aka Sammy, a 23 year old orphan, an atheist, who had a stiff childhood. Sammy, who was a photographer had accepted a project offered by a scientific team at a tiny island wishing to study the flora of that Island. Meila is the daughter of the chief tribal. Sammy falls in love with Meila, who knows there’ll be lots of hindrances in between his love. The story turns into a adventure where the scientific team and people of island are in trouble. The island trip goes from a research to adventure of a lifetime. Will Sammy be able to save his people? Story has unexpected twist at the end. Readers must find that by themselves. This book is a page turner from beginning to end. Language is simple with a good vocabulary. I would recommend this book to everyone out there looking for combination of romance and adventure.
The protagonist is a young man who became an adult too soon as a result of being pushed around by relatives when he becomes an orphan at the age of 8. Tamil background, atheist. But he is portrayed as a well-behaved kid with no attachment whatsoever. Even with friends, he isn’t emotionally invested. Doesn’t believe in love or marriage but as soon as he sees this very young tribal girl, he feels an attraction that soon turns into love. For a person who is so detached from relationships, I found he soon changed his viewpoint on that but then again, he has a strong affinity with nature and the way things exist in nature without a purpose, just being..unlike human beings who always looks for a purpose n striving towards attaining it. Maybe that is why he liked the tribal girl. The author has done a thorough research as the story has elements of science, romance, politics, nature, honesty and betrayal.
Samudran by A.R. Vikram is a journey of a twenty-three years old boy "Sammy," to explore different emotions in his new photography project. He became a part of a " Varoogu " project to explore the island's medicinal herbs. There are two tribes on the Island, Oksatans and Yerthingans. These two tribes are only island residents and serve a rivalry against each other. Sammy falls in love with Oksatans girl "Meila." And from here starts the slow-burn romance with a perfect blend of the mystery of lost girls.
Intriguing from the start, Samudran puts an attractive base on the tribal theme. Switching efficiently between the different themes, from romance to thriller, suspense, sci-fi, and moral values, the writing is clear cut, and the plot is well-paced. The characterization is solid and gives proper space for each character to develop. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and would love to recommend this to action-adventure readers.
This is the story of a 23rd year old Samudran aka Sammy. He is a part of the research expedition on an island " Maisyoor" on the coast of South India.
Many things are revealed during the expedition. The experiences faced by the research team is well documented in the book. The author also writes the troubles and the predicaments faced by the tribes of that region.
There is also romance and love in the air between the protagonist Sammy and his love interest. This made the read even better.
The book is lucid and highly vivid which made the book a page turner from the beginning till the end.
It's a amalgamation of different themes and different genres which made it a exciting read. I recommend this book for one and all.
Samudran The Extraordinary Journey of an Ordinary Man is a debut novel written by the author A R. Vikram and it's a story that will not only touch your heart but will also leave an unforgettable impression.
The book starts with a thrilling prologue which set the mood for the rest of the book perfectly. As the story started, it felt like the author has done a great deal of research while writing this book, as the details were finely described. The characters, places, surroundings, drama, situations, love, friendship, betrayal, suspense, and every emotion was defined as a perfectionist.
The book has an easy flow with lucid language, trapping our minds in the book. The book is not a short/quick read, I read it in intervals and trust me when I say this, even when I was not reading, I was actually thinking about the story, what will happen next and the thing that already happened.
Truly addictive and can't wait to read more future books written by the author A R. Vikram.
Overall a unique book with a sensational storyline.
