Do you find yourself feeling unfulfilled? Unworthy? Like you’ve checked all the boxes and built a life, a career, a family but still, something is missing?
From an early age we’re taught that in order to be worthy, to find true happiness, to be “somebody,” we have to accomplish many things. We become achievement machines, always grasping for the next big win to send a signal to the world—and to ourselves—that we’ve “made it.” That we are happy.
But do we ever “make it,” really? Are we truly happy not in the “#livingmybestlife” and “#blessed” way in which we caption our social media pages, but from a truly contented place of inner peace and joy? One where the yearning for the bigger house, the better job, the younger, more pliable spouse takes a backseat to the yearnings of our hearts and souls, a place where contentment just “is”?
We’re often told to follow our heart; that fragile, fickle organ at the center of our physical being. What’s really meant by that idiom is to follow our soul; that all-knowing, ever-wise space within all of us. But most people have been disconnected from their souls for so long, they have no idea where to find it…let alone how to follow it.
Free to Be is a simple six-week process of liberating your soul. With easy-to-digest daily exercises, it will lead you toward a life of deep fulfillment and lasting contentment. (That is, if you let it!) If you were given a guide that could reset your life—rewrite your story—right here and now, would you? If your answer is yes, let’s begin.

“We are not human beings in search of a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings immersed in a human experience.” —Wayne Dyer
This quote I live by, this gets me through each and every day. We are ultimately not in control but we can help guide ourselves toward a better life. Shirin’s book is eye opening and more importantly soul opening. A mere mortal can help direct us to being a better spirit as we move through life here on earth.
From the moment I opened the book, I felt Shirin's authenticity and passion pour out, embracing me like a warm hug. "Free to Be" speaks directly to the heart. Shirin's storytelling is unparalleled, allowing readers to step into her world and experience the transformation alongside her. Her courage in unveiling her own vulnerabilities creates a safe space for us, as readers, to explore our own hidden truths. Her words resonated deeply, reminding me of the importance of embracing our true selves and breaking free from societal expectations.
What truly sets "Free to Be" apart is the practical wisdom it offers. Shirin's advice is grounded in personal experience, making it relatable and actionable. Her words provide invaluable guidance, helping readers navigate the complexities of self-discovery and offering tangible steps towards personal freedom. The pages are imbued with inspiration and empowerment. Shirin's words ignite a fire within, urging us to break free from the shackles of doubt and embrace our true selves. Her message of self-acceptance and self-love resonates deeply, encouraging us to reclaim our power and live our lives authentically.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone seeking guidance, inspiration, and a profound sense of self-discovery. Prepare to be uplifted, motivated, and forever changed by the incredible journey that awaits within "Free to Be."
Shirin has created a beautiful guide on how to begin healing on your personal journey. Free To Be covers topics using both real life examples, stories and tools, while also supporting it with scientific studies. It combines all the steps and questions you need when you begin on the quest to freedom. You can feel how deeply this work has impacted her as she imparts her wisdom to the reader. Sharing her own personal feelings and experiences as she navigated her own journey.
What I loved most of the book was the honest conversation about honouring all of yourself especially the parts of yourself you have neglected over the years. Showing the distinction of how all 3 elements; mind, body and spirit can affect your life when not in balance.
The chapter on ‘Feel all the Feels’ was refreshing; it’s not often you are given such direct information on emotions. Discussions about emotions can be difficult, most people are uncomfortable with this topic. Shirin clearly discusses all the emotions and the relevance to them in our daily lives.
The book is a wonderful compilation on all the areas in life that require attention to live peacefully. Most importantly reminding us that the first step to heal and cultivate love is by looking in the mirror.
"Free to Be" by Shirin Etessam offers a refreshing and personal approach to reclaiming one's soul and embarking on a transformative journey. With a clearly structured six-week program, Etessam provides a stellar roadmap for individuals seeking a spiritual and practical life reset.
The book's structure is well thought out, dividing the six weeks into two distinct phases. The first half focuses on detoxing the brain, heart, and body, offering practical strategies to release negativity, let go of emotional baggage, and embrace a healthier lifestyle. Etessam's personal journey shines through in this section, making the guidance relatable and authentic.
The second half of the program delve deeper into discovering one's purpose, play and rewriting their story. Etessam’s approach truly shines here, explaining both the importance and necessity of play and finding joy in life - much-needed reminders in a world often focused on productivity and achievement.
Overall, Shirin Etessam's personal anecdotes, combined with the practical exercises and thought-provoking insights, make this book an invaluable resource. Whether starting a new journey or looking to reinvigorate your current path, "Free to Be" offers guidance and inspiration to help you reclaim your soul.
I was skeptical about this book, about the author's introduction to helping find my true self, to connect to my soul. I like the way she weaves her personal experience as a point of reference throughout the book so it's more relatable. As I started reading, I could feel her words speaking to me, resonating and moving me to actually do the prescribed exercises. They are clearly laid out and, as simple as they seem, they are not easy ... at first. They become joyful as you begin to embrace even the tiniest nuggets gained. Peace, inner AND outer. Being more connected by disconnecting and unplugging (this is challenging!!). Playing and dancing. I have never been able to truly meditate, to make room the quiet. Some of the later exercises helped me sit quietly and allow thoughts to come and go without needing to solve them or even pay attention. It takes practice. Something quite magical happens when you take the time to continue those exercises that bring you joy. I'll likely never make a vision board but I will meditate, walk, dance and write. And unplug! I highly encourage you to read this guidebook!!
"Free to Be" offers a refreshing perspective on finding fulfillment and contentment in life. The book challenges the notion that accomplishments and external achievements are the sole indicators of happiness and self-worth. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of reconnecting with our souls and aligning our lives with our innermost desires. The program outlined in the book offers a valuable framework for self-reflection, self-discovery, and personal growth. Shirin’s writing style is authentic, and straightforward, making the concepts and practices easily digestible. It's like having a friend who's been through it all, sharing their wisdom and guiding you. The book doesn't overwhelm with complex theories or abstract ideas but focuses on practical steps that can be implemented immediately. Whether you're feeling unfulfilled, searching for a deeper sense of purpose, or simply curious about exploring your inner world, “Free to Be” is a valuable resource that offers a simple and helpful program for inner well-being.
Inner peace breeze I recently listened to "Free to Be" twice, and wow, what a ride! The first time was a quick overview while running (missing some gems), but the second time, I really dug into the exercises, and it changed my perspective.
This book tackles that nagging feeling of unfulfillment, even when life looks perfect on paper. It challenges the hustle-for-happiness mindset and instead steers you toward genuine inner peace. The six-week process is packed with easy, actionable exercises that fit right into your daily routine.
The focus on reconnecting with our souls, often lost in our achievement-crazy world, was eye-opening. By the end of round two, I felt a profound shift—realizing true happiness lies within, beyond just ticking boxes.
If you're feeling like something's missing despite having it all, grab this book. I’m still a Type A, but it reminded me that reconnecting with ourselves isn't just a luxury—it's essential for a truly exciting and fulfilled life!
This is a compelling book and very helpful in daily life. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in improving their emotional well-being or day-to-day living circumstances.
Written with depth, intelligence and a touch of humor, this book offers refreshingly clear and accessible insights and exercises that have the capacity to transform lives. I often reach for this book when for some reason I need to regain balance, especially if it’s something related to relationships with people around me or with myself. It’s the kind of book you might want to read several times and take breaks between the paragraphs and exercises to reflect and digest, as it is both rich and deep. At the same time, the exercises are so accessible and impactful that I truly enjoy doing them - sometimes again and again.
I am grateful this lovely book found its way into my life.
Free to Be captures the essence of how to lead a meaningful life in a down-to-earth, accessible, and soulful guidebook. The book distilled what makes up a life worth living, and I loved every moment. The chapter on play especially spoke to me. Having just accompanied my mother through regaining the use of her body after a stroke incapacitated her left half, I have felt the importance of play first hand. In physical and occupational therapy, if the instructors would make a game out of an exercise, my mother would achieve concentration effortlessly and make strides. Instead of feeling frustrated, she would face her challenge with joy. This book is a great gift to the world, and I have already gifted copies to my loved ones. I will be re-reading it and following the 6-week collection of exercises, and I know that it will be an invaluable guide in helping me rediscover my inner fire.
Free to Be is what is needed in our schools today. Having worked in K-12 schools as a teacher and Assistant Principal, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) has become a focal point to addressing mental health. This book with the guide of teachers and parents, can help children gain self confidence, self awareness and connectedness to the world around them and each other. I have witnessed bullying, depression, harassment and the “pressure to perform” and it is destroying our youth.
Free to Be can offer a new approach for schools to address mental health. The book is accessible, easy to read and the exercises are relatable for many ages. The more people who use this book, the more connected to each other we will be!
Renee Hevia Retired teacher and Assistant Principal
I am a kinesthetic learner, and this book provides relevant and consequential exercises that help me venture into a more meaningful and spirited sense of self. Free To Be is mentally, emotionally, and spiritually accessible to anyone who wants to detox their mind, body, and soul to simply move more authentically in our ever complex world.
Shirin‘s style is playful, direct, and yet vulnerable, and as such, she meets the reader in a place that truly feels genuine.
In particular, the “Heart Detox” chapter rings true for me… In relationships there are some people you “taser”, “shield”, “filter” or “hug”. A life long lesson Shirin has captured in a very succinct and tangible way. Thank you Shirin for opening your heart and sharing an invaluable path to claiming our worth.
Playful and though-provoking: what and where am I really spending my time and energy? Proving new, fresh perspectives coupled with exercises to further open up to the possibilities of what life really has to offer, FREE TO BE does it all. Etessam generously shares her story in a relatable way and reminds us of the things that really matter: our peace of mind, our relationships and our joy: finding our True North. I appreciate the easily accessible writing style, at times it feels as if she is sitting next to me and we are having a conversation. The chapter on Play spoke to me - I know I need more of it in my life but at times have been intimidated that play is supposed to look/feel a particular way. Sharing the various play styles was validating. You don't want to miss this one!
What an incredible guide to reclaiming the soul! "Free to Be" offers thought provoking steps to clear the mind, heart and soul in order to find happiness and joy in life. The author, Shirin Etessam, offers very practical suggestions and approach, while being vulnerable and weaving in real life and relatable examples. The book drew me in as I wanted to continue to explore not only the "how to" but also find ways to rebalance and find deeper meaning in my life. So many elements of the book ring true for me, especially the reminder "thoughts can control you, or you can control your thoughts". This is more than a book, but a guide and platform to build a more enriching and positive life by reclaiming your soul. I highly recommend reading "Free to Be".
FREE TO BE allowed me a new perspective on life, a new outlook on my relationships with others, and most importantly, the relationship with me! Focusing on my authenticity and listening to my intuition while honoring self-care. Shirin showed me that the light within is always with you, that forgiveness is always an option, that not everyone belongs to your tribe, and that you truly can move through and transform any negative experience into a life lesson learned. Shirin – thank you for your wisdom and guidance. Thank you for showing me a path that is much more enjoyable to take as I make my way on my journey while I reclaim my soul. Merci and I love you.”
This book could not have come at a better time. While many, if not all of us, are dealing with the cacophony of modern life (social media, the onslaught of negative news, fractured relationships), this book offers a plan for relief and a chance at "reclaiming your soul." Written in a week by week (6 of them) format, it illustrates segments of the collective malaise, and offers clever exercises for each week. Ms. Etessam's writing style is pithy, cogent, with a kick-in-the-butt sense of humor. I highly recommend "Free to Be" to anyone trying to gain control over their life and emotions. It's a worthwhile read.
A highly recommended book for everyone who wants to live a fulfilled life by breaking free of personal limitations. Shirin provides practical exercises over the course of this book and offers clear guidance. It is truly a must-read as it is timeless and the lessons can be carried on and on. For anyone who is looking to improve their lives positively and seeking personal and professional growth, Free to Be is essential. The writing is very clear and to the point. I feel very privileged to be able to read an advance copy and grateful for the author’s wisdom and insights.
Free to Be is an amazing book for anyone feeling stuck or wanting to know where to even begin in the path to self-exploration and freedom. Shirin takes so much content out there in this space and breaks it down in a very real and raw, practical, step-by-step guide with tools and resources. What she has distills down, and the way she does it, makes it accessible to so many. This is one of those books I hope all humans - no matter where they are on their journey - read and use to elevate themselves and their lives in meaningful ways. It's a path to freedom, joy and coming back to ourselves.
An outstanding opportunity to spend time with Ms. Etessam and her thoughts. The book is about "excavating your soul from the massive jumble called "life" to connect with it on a deeper level honor it, nurture it, play with it, and eventually set it free. Broken into six weeks, Ms. Etessam creates a plan to move us toward freeing ourselves from "all the crap that blocks us from truly celebrating ourselves". Beautifully written, the author guides us through her journey and the reason for her writing. It's intimate and helpful, open and honest, and it's real and timely.
Wow this book is a Bibliophile’s Dream!!! I could not put it down. Etessam concisely delivers so much gold in one book. The content of Free to Be is wise, scientific, personal, and instructive/practical. Her style of writing is playful, clever, and incisive. I have never read a book that was sooo soulful and profound and yet so unexpectedly funny. Her journey and culmination of this work is a gift to us all.
There is a LOT about this book that I really love. It is practical and thought provoking. The six week guide is so managable - I don't particularly have a lot of free time each day, but the exercises do not require a lot of time. I find it so interesting that a few minutes a day can be so enlightening and refreshing to your mind and soul. I particularly liked the week 3 - Detoxing your body. It's your head, your heart, your soul - GREAT stuff!
Shirin Etessam's book - A Six-Week Guide to Reclaiming Your Soul – is outstanding.! I love how she has made her approach so accessible in this step by step system. The way she intertwines her own personal experiences demonstrates a vulnerability and a true desire to help others on their path to as she calls it "reclaiming their souls." So much wisdom and so many gems I keep going back and rereading as I do the exercises.

This book fell into my life at the right time. Shirin's claim to help me "unearth my soul" in only 6-weeks seemed unimaginable at first. However, her relatability through personal stories and her simple 2-part approach to spiritual guidance made it easy for me to dip a toe into the transformation pool. I've been on auto-pilot for too long, and thinking my life was as good as it gets, isn't true for me anymore. I am truly happy this book found its way into my life when it did. Thank you, Shirin!
"In German we say, “das Ziel ist der Weg.” It translates to, “the goal is the journey.” And I am thankful to Shirin for taking me on this journey … her journey. I’m grateful for the clarity, the process and the pragmatism. Whether you have faced a setback or are looking for a way to reset, Shirin’s process and weekly exercises are essential tools to help achieve a whole life." - Traci in Switzerland
Every now and then you come across a book that feels like you were meant to read. It guides you to the cusp of change and encourages you to take the leap. Free to Be is that book. Shirin Etessam takes you on a soul journey, that feels destined. Her writing encourages you to follow the pathways to your best, most soulful and authentic self. Its the kind of book you can’t stop referencing or gifting!
Great writing, author was very clear and authentic in making her point by using personal life experiences. By demonstrating her vulnerability towards her weaknesses and making wrong decisions, she showed the path to freedom from personal limitations. Love the sentence: free from doing to free from being. Highly recommended for people who desire personal liberation from their constant thoughts and mind clutter.
The author takes us on her powerful post break up journey of spiritual exploration. She asks "Why is it in school, they teach you math, science, history, English, and sometimes physical education, but little about mental, emotional and spiritual health?" Her book thoughtfully fills in many of those gaps and gives us the benefit of all her exploration. We're left with many resources, a six week series of exercises, and most powerfully of all an authentic and honest story of her own awakening.
This is a transformative guide to rediscovering your true self. With its structured six-week journey, insightful reflections, and practical exercises, this book helped me release limiting beliefs and reconnect with inner peace. Etessam’s approach is both compassionate and empowering, making self-healing feel accessible and deeply rewarding. A must-read for anyone seeking more clarity, joy, and authenticity in their life!
Reading FREE TO BE helped me slowly untangle all the false stories I’d been telling myself for years, so that I could truly rewrite my narrative in a way that feels true to me. So often, I bail out on self-help books before I ever make it to the payoff. But this process spoke to my soul’s desire to live my life authentically, wholly and full of play.
Despite the title, this is not your typical self-help read. Etessam writes with humor and authenticity, sharing hard earned knowledge and tangible strategies to, well, a fuller, more intentional and healthy life. No fluff, from a relatable straight shooter with a laid out path for getting out of your own way. Really, this is a must read.
Etessam's "Free to be" book is a well written self-help book that helps readers reacquaint with their soul. With an insightful approach, she guides readers towards finding and nurturing their true essence. The book offers practical exercises to help readers declutter their mind and begin to heal. I enjoyed reading this book and found it highly applicable.
