(this is pre Crimea , Florence nightingale etc, when they though field hospitals might be a great idea).so this would put really one off joining the horse cavalry in the 'Napoleonic era'...he rightly skips lightly over the 'working conditions', 'casualties' and hairy accounts of fighting with swords on horseback.. after shooting his trusted horses, he retired (probably bewildered) to shoot at birds in Scotland..
