I found this to be an satisfactory book but nothing special. The author writes in a competent manner but I found the topic to be on the dry side. It deals considerably with the organizational structure of the Gestapo as well as its cruel, vicious history.

A good book. It details how men from very common backgrounds can achieve horrendous actions and obtain power. We must always remember so that it doesn't happen again.

Less a history of the Gestapo than of all the other Nazi security organs, like the SS, SD, Polizei, etc. Little new ground covered, but more details than other histories. Had previously read the author’s NKVD history, and disagree with his assessment as to which regime was worse.

This is a much more general history than Crankshaw. This one has lots of photos. There is also some unintentional humor in having so many interviews with survivors who were Communists. I guess their complaint was that they were on the wrong end of the jackboot. They did a good job of taking over the torture chambers after the war. On the whole this is good but not great. It does have better background on the major players, Himmler, Heydrich, Diels, Barbie etc.

A remarkable book and very informative. I particularly like the eyewitness accounts of people who survived torture and concentration camps. This is a very thorough book and not too terribly long. It is certainly worth reading if you are interested in the history.

In many respects a difficult book to read; unbelievable that it really happened. Extremely insightful.
