Citation by: Sandi Student

Type of Reference: Dictionary

Call Number: Ref 423

Content/Scope: A dictionary targeted to 8-12 year old students, containing over 30,000 entries and over 1,000 detailed illustrations. Contents include word histories, sample sentences, a pronunciation guide, a thesaurus and world maps. Although children use the Internet for researching information, this dictionary would help build basic literacy and information skills.

Accuracy/Authority/Bias: Scholastic is a global publishing company known for its educational materials. Many schools turn to their book club offers and host book fairs using their resources.

Arrangement/Presentation: Arrangement is alphabetical. Included in the 800 page dictionary are homophones and sample sentences with information about prefixes, suffixes, synonyms, and word histories. In addition to the average dictionary, Scholastic has included a thesaurus and guides to grammar, pronunciation, and abbreviations as maps and information about countries and U.S states and presidents. The pronunciation guide uses letter sounds instead of symbols. It also uses a vast array of illustrations to keep the attention of young reader.

Relation to other works: There are many children's dictionaries available; this dictionary meets requirements for libraries that need a comprehensive reference at an elementary level.

Accessibility/Diversity: The illustrations include a diverse population. The language is non sexist. This will be of specific interest to children who are visual learners.

Cost: $15.00
