Memoir Donegal ; Echoes of another Time and Iron Wheels by

Hazel McIntyre

The world is awash with histories of the post-war period, but what makes McIntyre such a joy to read is her near total surrender to the era, and her immersion in the sights, sounds and sensations of the times. Thousands of competing voices crowd this portrait of the 1950s, which, in McIntyre’s generous hands, is made to feel both achingly familiar and fascinatingly foreign in today’s consumer, crazy world.

What a wonderful read; funny, sad, heartwarming and an evocative social history. A must read!
Also, I bought the talking-book version for my aunt and she just enjoyed it very much.

I recently learned that my family hales from Culdaff, Co Donegal. I longed to be a part of the rural Irish life there. To experience weddings, dances, funerals, holidays and traditions. This book was absolutely delightful! It had me laughing in some places! No one can paint a picture with words like Hazel McIntyre. Another fine novel to treasure!
