An excellent biography of Wolsey. The author painted a very rich portrait of the period. Wolsey the man really comes through with all his flaws and insecurities, but ultimately, he appears sympathetic. Occaisionally, the author got off subject, but overall, the book was a full vivid biography of a fascinating man.

I picked this book up at a used bookstore in Winnipeg based on the title and the glowing reviews on the back. Indeed, if you're a fan of studying the Tudor years you should find much to appreciate in this highly-detailed biography of Thomas Wolsey. I learned a lot about the laws and social norms inhibiting class mobility at the time he grew up, which made his rise to power so unlikely and remarkable. I guess, this is a book which has long been forgotten. It was written by Charles Furguson in the 50s, not the Furguson who filmed "Inside Job" though!
I was attracted by the NAME of the book, which turns out to be a quotation from Shakespeare's HenryVIII, if I'm not wrong!
