If there were a league table of greatest living Scandinavian crime writers then Liza Marklund must surely be somewhere near the top. In Annika Bengtzon she's created a wonderfully engaging and credible everyday heroine. Often vulnerable and always, seemingly, in the midst of a personal crisis
Annika's steely persistence and integrity always manage to tease out the true story.
In this novel she's investigating the murder of a Swedish family on the Spanish Costa Del Sol. She's soon drawn into a comp

I’ve read several books by Liza Marklund and this is quite a typical Marklund book, I think. So, if you enjoyed her previous books, you’ll like this one too.

I loved it that a lot of the story took place in Spain. We’ve had enough Scandinavian settings from Marklund and her fellow Nordic crime writers. It’s good to see that outside of this somewhat exotic setting for many English-speaking readers, the story still holds up.

While the story generally seemed realistic, some story lines merged togethe

The Long Shadow finds Marklund’s heroine Annika going through a period of change. As she is recovering from what seems to be an irrevocable breakage with her partner and father of her two children, she must also deal with the changing face of the newsroom, including a change in her status as well as a new direct superior. Then there is a murder in Spain that ties into

It’s somewhat upsetting that Marklund isn’t more readily/easily available in the United States (Red Wolf, which is not the first

The author picks up from previous novels in the series with Annika Bengtzon plying her trade doggedly as a reporter for Sweden’s Evening Post. The plot takes her to the Costa del Sol and Morocco following the robbery and murder of a well-known retired hockey star and his family, except for a 16-year-old daughter by a former marriage who miraculously escaped the slaughter but goes missing. Annika follows the story, despite being assigned several silly assignments by her news editor, in an effort ...more

Aaargh! I loved several of the novels in this series, and I had such high hopes for this one when I was about a quarter of the way through. But rarely have I seen something fall apart at the end in quite such a spectacular fashion as En Plats I Solen. Whatever happened to her?

All the same, there were some wonderfully bitchy conversations. My favourite bit was when Annika's new boss at the newspaper is telling her she needs to sex up her next article.

"Okay," he says, "we want an interview with so

Initially, I might have had a bit more trouble with this one from Marklund, but on reflection I'm sure it was because I'd seen the Swedish television series adaptation, which I'd also recommend.

That said, I recommend 'The Long Shadow' for this reason: no female crime writer I know of fairly exudes the sense of authenticity that Marklund does - as a journalist and as a woman juggling a career and sharing children with her (philandering but alluring) ex-husband. She never apologizes, she twists he

...more

Series...or serial?

When the family of a Swedish sport star is gassed to death during a robbery on the Costa del Sol, the Evening Post sends reporter Annika Bengtzon to cover the story. Meanwhile a reorganisation at the newspaper means that Annika’s colleague Patrik has been promoted to be her new boss. And the appeal is about to be heard for Filip Andersson, a man convicted of murder, apparently in a previous book.

This is a very well written slowburn thriller that takes Nordic crime away from th

The Long Shadow is the eighth North American release in Liza Marklund's Annika Bengtzon series.

The Long Shadow picks right up from the last book, Lifetime. Annika's personal life is in shambles - her husband has left her for another woman, he has custody of their children and her home has burned down. She's just learned that she'll now be reporting to a man who used to be her subordinate at the Swedish newspaper she works at.

She's sent to Spain to report on the death of a former Swedish nation

Review of Liza Marklund's Annika Bengtzon Crime Reporter Series

Many characters solve mysteries, but reporter protagonists can make their own headlines. One I’ve come across lately is Swedish writer Liza Marklund who created Annika Bengtzon. Bengtzon works for the Stockholm publication Kvällspressen where she covers the crime beat.

Bengtzon, who is haunted by her past, is only comfortable as she unremittingly pursues her assignments, often risking her own life to get the story. At home where she i

As is often the case with Swedish crime novels, the original Swedish title conveys with far greater accuracy what the book is about. Case in point: the Millenium novels: Men Who Hate Women (direct translation of the Swedish title) contains social commentary at the core of the book, and drives home the plot trap which sprung the glorious heroine Liz Salander. But the titled English "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" establishes the heroine, but in a clichéd, lurid way, calculated no doubt to sell ...more

Liza Marklund has sold 15 million books and become Sweden's favourite thriller writer without good reason. Her Annika Bengtzon character is again the focus in The Long Shadow. Still getting over her broken marriage to Thomas, still the unruly but noted reporter for Stockholm's Evening Post, and on the case of a Swedish sports star's family murdered on Spain's Costa Del Sol. It took me a bit to get into this one but once I was - I was hooked. It was a fascinating fictional look into the drug trade and all the consequences.,and there were so many different plots that it was hard to know which direction the book was going to take at any given time. There were definitely some twists that I never saw coming! I liked Annika as a main character and I'm interested that this is a series..I think it would've been helpful for me to read the previous book but I didn't think it ...more

I received this from Random House UK, Transworld Publishers via Net Galley for an honest review

I read the previous book to this and enjoyed it, read it some time ago so when I saw this one needing reviews I knew I would love it.

I read this just before Christmas and forgot to add my review!

This book joins up where the other book left some strings hanging loose, so I was able to piece things nicely together.

The details of Italy was lovely too and felt at times I was there.
