When a fierce South Pacific typhoon strikes an American tug, its desperate crew comes upon a high-tech Russian warship that appears to be strangely deserted, but more than a potential fortune is at stake--the ship is inhabited by a non-human intelligence. Original. Movie tie-in.
SD Perry (Stephani Danelle, by the way, though she prefers SD or Danelle) has been writing novelizations and tie-ins for most of her adult life. Best known for her work in the shared multiverses of Resident Evil, Star Trek, and Aliens, SD is a horror nerd and an introvert. Her father is acclaimed science fiction author Steve Perry. SD lives with her family in Portland, Oregon.
A much more entertaining book than I expected. The author did a good job distinguishing between the various perspectives of the different characters, but these characters ended up being very one-dimensional. I felt captivated by the narrative and excited to see how it ended. The ending itself felt a little underwhelming and less detailed than the rest of the story. Contains very strong language, gore, and other horror elements meant for mature audiences.
Virus by S.D. Perry is a fast, engaging read with solid writing and just the right amount of suspense. I'm already a fan of Perry's writing style from her other novelizations: nothing too complex, but great visual descriptions and believable inner dialogue. The characters all felt distinct, and the story moves quickly (only 220 pages!).
That said, it’s very obvious this was based on a movie. A lot of the plot plays out in that classic Hollywood way, with predictable moments and tropes throughout. The twist about the “virus” was unexpected but didn’t totally land for me. And most of the book feels like setup rather than a full confrontation with the "villain.'
Still, I had a good time. It’s a fun, slightly cheesy sci-fi ride that kept me turning pages, even if I rolled my eyes a few times along the way.
It’s quite interesting to me how so many science fiction books result in disaster due to an evil manager. Loved this book, wish the movie’s monsters would’ve lived up to what I pictured in my head from the book!
I’m a big fan of Virus (the movie), and one day I found the novelization of the movie at the local used bookstore! I was so excited. I didn’t even know it had a movie tie in novel! 😮
Virus (the book) is just as much fun as Virus (the movie)! I enjoyed getting to see more into everyone’s inner thoughts and feelings. It gave me a whole new way of looking at the character’s dynamics.
This book has a LOT of body horror grossness that is so creative and fun. If you are a fan of bio-mech horror, you will really enjoy this story. Plenty of bloody nastiness for any gore fan. Ewwwww! 😀
I loved the movie Virus and the book is just as much fun. 🙂 A great body horror alien story with plenty of action and gore. I had a fantastic time reading this. So glad I found this book! ❤
