Read as a kid, the story of Sprout who finds a dog named Chops and convinces his parents to let him keep Chops

This is the adventure of a young boy named Sprout lost on a cold winter's evening in his hometown. I didn't like it after he told his baby sister to shut up at the beginning of the book. His whole attitude is so self-centered that it was hard to enjoy it. If the boy's character had been kind, it would have been a fabulous book.
